Leaky intercooler :(

Featured Replies

oke, so I have a boost leak and got under the car to inspect the lower boost pipe as the top looked fine but that was fine as well, but I noticed that the whole bottom of the IC is caked in oil and grit, so looked through the bumper at the IC again its oily but when I rev I can feel the air coming out the front, so figured it must have a hole in it, bad times! :(

hoping to get a cheap 2nd hand IC of ebay, so questions are....

Is there anything I can do to it like a temporary fix, JB Weld :wonder: ?

Might it be worth whipping it out and getting it welded somewhere ?

When you replace the IC do you have to replace any O-ring or clips whilst doing it ?

I hate starting a job and finding out I have to run away to the shop to buy another part, but oh no wait I can't as the cars not got a bumper on it  so want to know what I'm in for lol

cheers for any help, Si

What made you think you had a leak in the first place?

Noticed my ic was full of oil on the bottom half plus oil on the lower ic pipes. I've cleaned it up, put a few cable ties on and going to see how it goes. Never thought about checking the front of the ic.

My MPG has taken a big decline, mostly around town and it hisses incredibly loud when it comes on boost so I guessed there must of been a leak somewhere and everything else was all connected and working properly.

Get it welded/jb welded up, mines holding up really well with weld and jb weld in a different area, the fella uses jb on 3.4bar lorries so you'll be fine.

sure it isn't a hole in an intercooler pipe?

i had one of those they are quite common to get in the lower 90 degree bend of the piping

yeh took off the engine tray and checked the lower pipe, there wasn't any movement or splits in the pipe and the oil seepage was on the IC and the joint and not the actual boost pipe.

That's what I wanted to hear, I'll get the bumper off and try some JB Weld on it, unless its really big and bad and I'll see about getting it welded properly.

I was just a bit sceptical of using what looked like super clue on the IC.

Does anyone know if I should take the IC off the car to try JB weld or just degrease it on the car, apply the JB Weld and leave for a day or would that be bad practice for any reason ?

Cheers, Si.

I took mine off had it welded then leak tested and that showed up a crack inside the core where the fins are so we bent and snapped them out of the way and used jb weld as the welder couldn't get to it. I fitted and drove home in half hour. Didnt hit boost at all until 4 hours after applying. It's all good now. It did need cleaning and de greasing prior to jb weld.

Hmm I'm getting lower mpg than I use it. Might need to take a further look.

Thanks

It might be cheaper to find a second hand one and to replace it rather than trying to patch yours up?

that was the plan, I have seen some come and go on ebay for really cheap because well who needs one (FMIC FTW) but my luck, the only one currently there is £100

so might see if I can patch it up for now as its costing me money with the bad MPG any way, until I can find a cheap steal on the bay.

ta, Si

I just sold my old one for £40 on ebay. It was snapped up at that price. Maybe I should've asked for more
