OOOPS! I used the wrong key

Featured Replies

Hi

I only picked up my lovely 03 Shoda Fabia Silverline yesterday, had a nice smooth 40 mile drive back. When I went to it this morning I used the door key in the ignition and tried to start it....what an idiot!!

Anyway to cut a long story short when I used the right key the ELECTRONIC ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT stayed on and is still on. I have it booked into the auto electricians on Tuesday. The chap said he thinks the wrong key has caused the problem and he should be able to reset the computer, so wish me luck, I will be devastated if its something major. Not used to cars with computers my last was an old faithful R reg proton persona compact, and I thought it was time to upgrade, hope I did the right thing, will post back when I know.

PS I hope I have done this post right.

How come you have a seperate door key? Have the locks been changed?

one key should work everything with your car.

No I dont think so. The main key has the remote on it to open and lock car, and the second key doesnt, so I thought it was just an emergency key if remote fails, but I`m not sure of anything at the moment....its all new to me. I havn`t had the chance to learn anything yet about the car apart from reading posts on here. But as I said in my post I`m not used to all this tech stuff lol. Think I would be safer with a push bike.

Ah yes, I get it now.

Both keys should have a transponder in them, even the non remote one which should allow both to function as normal keys.

OR

Your car originally had 2 remote keys, one was lost and the other one made up cheaply but with no transponder.

Ah that makes sense do you think that may have caused the problem

Lavinia

Under normal circumstances the other key should have still worked after using the one that did not.

Doubt its anything to do with the key if I'm honest

Both keys should be exactly same but one is "main key" with remote

Where as other wil only unlok car in lock. This is like spare key

Older cars like pre 2005 mostly did this, dunno why. Probs to save money

So I highly doubt its the keys thts the problem

Unless previous owners has had a new key made up

Oh dear it looks like I may have a bigger problem then if thats the case. The car does have quite high mileage 120 but it has been serviced twice yearly since new so i naively thought all would be well.Because the condition inside and out is superb.

I will have to wait till Tuesday then with baited breadth, Many thanks for the imput

You could try an old fashioned reboot. Disconnect the battery for 1/2hr. then reconnect it and try the right key again.

Doesn't cost anyting to try.

As for 2 differnt keys, yes the door locks or steering lock has been changed.

Hi Everyone,

GOOD NEWS!!!!! the light has gone off!! I am putting it in for a full service on Tuesday, it is due sometime this month and it will make me feel a little more confident with the car.

Hi SOOTLE

thanks for your advice.....when you say disconnect the battery would I disconnect both leads? and if I do that would the radio still work without a code? Because it would be handy to know in case I do anything as stupid in the future. The more I can learn about this car the better, and I must say you have made me feel so much better saying that the key would have had an effect, I was so worried that I had purchased a big problem, so thanks for that.

Many Thanks to everyone

Lavinia

Just disconnect the the - ve. black lead. As long as you have the original Skoda radio/cd the ECU in the car will recognise it belongs to your car. The code should also be on a label stuck in the servivce book or Radio/cd instruction book.

a few points@

1/ No need for to disconnect the battery anymore, they said the "ecu" light went out !!!

2/ agreed it sounds like the cheap OEM standard spare key, would have been a car without remote central locking, like I had with a late fabia minus central lock, could be an oem key definitely

3/ at no point did the babbz say that she/he couldnt start the car, that is a misunderstanding and probably irrelevant to any problem. Using the "wrong key" was merely an observation and misunderstanding of the problem from Babs perhaps.

The ECU issue could be with anything, not necessarily the key. Although it is possible the key could be a non OEM without transponder, or a faulty transponder, certainly. Best to take a photo of both keys for comparison here.

Best to scan with vagcom, fault code reader or stealers to find out if there are any faults left on the car.

Hi

I dont think it was the key that caused the light to come on, as a couple of days later it came on again only for an hour or so.But yesterday the car had a full service and diagnostics and thankfully all is well.

Thank you all so much for your help it is very much appreciated
