EBC brakes

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of fitting EBC Ultimax discs with Redstuff pads (new type). Has anyone experience of EBC brake products ??

I've got on with their discs, but not their pads. Fitted Greenstuff once, to my Polo GTI - and they were awful.

They might have improved now, and I know some who've fitted other types (yellow spec I think) without issues. I'm still wary of them though and would much rather fit Mintex, Pagid or Ferodo (the latter especially).

Sack that, Brembo discs and Mintex M1144 pads.

Do the M1144 pads have wear indicator leads ??

yes they do mate.

im currently running ebc plain discs and redstuff pads, they are very good quality and have excellent stopping power , the hotter you get them the better they get (a much read statement but very true), they are good from cold and give out very little brake dust compared to others, BUT they squeal very badly at slow speeds!!!!

for fast road driving they are awesome(imho), but around town they squeal far too much.

the only thing i didnt do when i fit them it use copper slip because they have anti squeal shims fitted on the pads, i might try some on to see if it makes a difference , but to be honest i dont think it will its the hard compound of the pads.

I didn't have a squeal issue that was worth writing home about when I was running them.

Slight noise until they were bedded in, but once done it was fine.

just out of interest did you use copper slip (or similar) on the backs of the pads when you fitted them?

cheers for that my local vag specialist sells the pagid equivalent of this stuff , im going to refit the pads with this and see what happens !

thanks

I use EBC stuff on all our cars, and have done for years. From our AX and my Matro to my dads Scoobie. I have Greenstuff all round on my Furby and the car stops perfectly well. I am soon going to change my discs and am very tempted by the Ultimax slotted ones. My dad did have their TGD discs which were noisy when braking hard, however these were the old design, the newer ones have less grooves. He has now got the slotted ones and are now silent.

I've just yesterday fitted a set of EBC Redstuff to my Yeti on 312mm discs, in lieu of Ferodo DS2500s.

A little early to comment on 'performance' but I've heard that EBC pads (of all types) are much improved over what they were offering a few years ago, despite the names being the same.

Yeah they are. I think when I went the way of the EBC reds and you went DS2500 for your octy, the main differences were the DS2500 pads were twice the price and R90 approved, while the DS2500 were more suited if you were tracking it rather than mostly fast road.

Not quite right; DS2500s are not, and have not been, E90 approved. Whereas current Redstuff are.

Price differential remains and considering the EBC Redstuff have sound absorbing shims, wear indicator wiring and are E90 approved, I have to say are pretty good value; particularly as they are only c. 15% above the cost of a set of OE pads.

I'm running EBC Yellowstuff up front on Brembo discs and performance is vey good. Possibly not as sharp as Ferodo DS2500's but the pads do have indicator wires and are not 'track only', that the Ferodo's used to be. Don't want to give insurers any reason not to pay out!!

I can get a set of redstuff pads, ultimax discs (312) and HEL braided lines landed in Ireland from Camskill for about 270 euros. That would be a fairly good brake set up ???

Will be fitting EBC Ultimax standard discs and pads to my Octy II estate this week as my current ones are all worn out. Will let you know how I get on with them once they are on.

I did mean that the Reds were R90 and the DS2500 were not, as that was my main reason for going for the reds. What was I typing :dull:

RE the set up, I wouldn't bother with braided lines, as IIRC the standard ones are already reinforced.

I ran OEM 312mm and Reds and the stopping power was a huge improvement, especially when warm.

Got the front ones on no problem - am bedding them in this week.

The rear ones I cannot do at the moment as I cannot get the rear caliper mounting off due to an odd size / shape 'key' being needed. I'd be grateful if anyone knows what it is?

EBC Ultimax discs & pads bedded in and all good.

General impressions so far are that the brake dust seems different (finer) than OEM pads, but actually there is more of it than before!

Stopping power seems to have improved though and, as this is one of the reasons for choosing after market products, it has been worth the extra money.

There are more responsive under gentle braking especially if needing to brake gently initially (thus warming pads slightly) and then apply pressure suddenly.

Am reasonably pleased, but there are some quality issues that I will be taking up with EBC.

One of the front discs had a large scratch across the inside face and both the rear discs were heavily discoloured as though they had been sat around for a long time and oxidation had occurred on the 'oil' used to coat the discs to prevent rusting.

Although no long term damage has been done (I hope) it does not strike me as being what would be expected from high quality British engineering!

I'll post pictures when I can access them at home to see what other people think.
