Need a new gearbox!

Featured Replies

According to Newmarket Skoda in Bannockburn who have been bloody fantastic i may add, just a bit surprised that a car thats just over 2 years old with 30k on the clock needs a new gearbox, when we got the car i was adamant it had a noise from the clutch release bearing but Border Skoda kept fobbing me off every-time i complained even with a "leave it till its really noisy and before your warranty runs out and go to your local dealer" :S

fastforward to today got a call from Newmarket to say its not the release bearing but the gearbox that needs stripped down with a possiblity to needing replaced.

Its always changed gear smoothly and felt perfect so it seems very odd, the aircon was never really cold so they checked that and done diagnostics to which they said "there was a load of faults probably due to your remap so they have been cleared" now they know its remapped!!! :(

rebooked for tuesday and will be in for 3 days just hope they dont come back with a big bill claiming its been remapped so no warranty! :'(

Thought the STS box meant they wouldn't generally find out.

Oh they can tell :)

But only if they bother to check - hopefully they wont.

Not having much luck with it are you, hope you get it fixed ok. Can't see the remap altering the warranty, the fault was there before the map. Not sure why a remap would cause issues with aircon?, it's quite mechanical really (aircon)

Oh dear.

The fact they've seen there's a remap on there could make things difficult though. As there's no way to prove that the fault was there before the remap was applied.

What state did the car goto the dealer in? With the 'performance' map loaded? But as said, if they think the issue might be mapping related and they go looking, then the tell-tale signs are plain to see.

Best of luck and fingers crossed for you.

Steve

They wouldn't know how to check on the VAS system believe me.

Re-map? . . . What Re-map? ;)

They wouldn't know how to check on the VAS system believe me.

I guess it all depends on how observant the dealership is.

Just playing "Devils Advocate" for a moment.

A new gearbox is not your everyday, cheap and cheerful warranty claim.

Skoda UK love to have people check over a vehicle for even the smallest of claims against the warranty and like an insurance reviewer - they would love to find something which means they don't have to pay out.

Just saying that if this was a small thing tehre would be no issue - I just cannot help feeling there will be further investigation as a gearbox should last longer than 30k miles.

oh they know alright but no mention of them not actually doing it under warranty i spoke to a guy who ran his FL vrs up up Crail's 1/4 mile last month knew it was mapped we had a little fun on the way home (i didnt know him at the time) until i turned up at the garage and recognized his face lol, he said they dont bother about remaps especially if they know you look after it and well the rain this morning was just running off it i even got a comment from the chief mechanic :giggle:

It was the digging about for the aircon that they said to me "yeh it had a load of faults due to your remap we have cleared them for now" really must get VCDS as soon as possible thats if i keep the car long enough :wonder: already been browsing Bmw and the Mercedes website on my lunch B)

Can understand you wanting to jump ship mate - but on the other side, you'll have a well sorted car by the end of all this - as you'll know everything's been changed for new parts!

haha i suppose, wonder how much the warranty extension will be come February 2012 thats if they allow me to extend it :giggle:

What is the problem with the car? Symptoms and noises. I'm a little suspect about my gearbox, seems to make whining noises when in first gear, especially when backing off the throttle.

Go and get an independent check on it before you take it in, sounds like the DMF is away not the box

Does it sound like a cement mixer full of gravel when its idling???

How do they really know it's been mapped?

What codes were there?

I know with the STS or SRSii in my case when you swap maps there are no codes when finished, also it should put it back to a 100% stock map. Did you clear the codes with the unit before you took it in?

Makes me count my blessings at 105k mine has no problems at all.

The only way it sounds to me and its what i originally thought and to be fair so did the garage to the point they ordered the part was a clutch release bearing noise and rumble, press the clutch it goes away :wonder:, never had any clutch slipping drove absolutely fine even with the map on.

Put it this way thursday 5pm i'll be happy then when the car is on my drive and its went under a warranty claim B)

There was no codes on the car apart from when i first mapped it even before then i spoke to Ben at shark before loading the map about a code showing an Evap purge valve. i cleared it and it came back on thats when i booked it in for it and the noisy what i thought was a release bearing which i've had since i bought it and kept being fobbed off by Border Skoda the original selling dealer.

2 years old and 30k is nothing. My gearbox had to be replaced at 9 months old and 20k. Like you the dealership I had to use was great, just a shame the product isn't as good.

Jeeez!!! :(

Do you still have the car? also what did it drive like after the repair? did they just change the box no clutch or flywheel??

Sorry for the questions but if this turns out to not be a warranty job i'm down the creek without a fecking paddle or life jacket! i'll be selling my ass up town.

Right so they're just guessing, maybe cause of the Milltek?

Hope you get it sorted FOC

Trust me we can tell when a car has been tamperred with lol :D As we do the exact same with our own cars so know all of the tricks. dont worry i have had my fair share of warranty claims on all my skoda's.ps TECH with the FL octavia :)

Hmmm its not Chris is it?? :giggle:

lol  how'd you guess aye we can tell by the ECU counter and also when you stick a shark performance sticker on the tailgate lol. AS i said the warranty issue should be fine with the gearbox. what do you think of the STS any way

  • Author

Hullo bestest bestest mate :giggle: i need to get that sticker off ASAP!! lol, to be fair genuinely the noise has been there since we bought it in january its been back to Border Skoda 3 times for it i have emails etc even one of the reply to my last request to get it looked at before booking it into Newmarket the reply was "keep driving it until the noise is louder and before your warranty runs out book it into your local dealer" i dunno how Border's have customers honestly.

As for the STS its great and what i'm very very chuffed with is the smoothness of the map is really nice, only thing is i think the diverter valve is gone i'm gettin a whistling on boost  doubt that will be under warranty lol not fussed i'll get the new revised D version.

I'll see ya on Tuesday Chris minus the sticker (although maybe a tad late since even the cheery receptionist knows its mapped lol)

lol lol na i can remember you complained about it before. To be fair sometimes it is hard to pin point a noise but after the second visit you would have thought they would have got you to demonstrate the noise to them. Dont know wether to get the STS or go for a REVO. All my other cars have been to Falkland performance in glenrothes, Who even set up my clio cup which dyno'd at 227 BHP and ran 13.3's all day long ( damn i miss wiping smiles off peoples faces ) lol
