Lower Intercooler Hose - seeping oil

Featured Replies

Hi All

Day 2 of VRS ownership and i have found a leak :'(

i was looking around my front brake discs and pads to see how much they had left till replacing and on drivers side just at bottom of arch liner i noticed a patch of oil

so took the belly pan off and noticed the elbow hose from turbo down pipe (i think thats the name) and intercooler was not sitting properly. Push it in and resat the clip which was a bit funny and im not sure if ive put it on right as it wasn't sitting properly to begin with.

does the clip look in place? there are 2 prongs on the top side of the hose which i put one end of the clip into.

is it normal for oil to seep from pipe? why didn't they just use one long hose instead of putting the elbow in there, hmm.

anyway, all cleaned up and will keep an eye on it

any info much appreciated

thanks

Anyone?

Hard to tell from the pics.. Sorry.

Not normal for oil to seep, this indicates you have a leak & there's a lot of cr@p in your boost pipework.

Lots of pipes as much easier at manufacturing stage to fit it all, and no vehicle specific machining is required (lots of cars use these bits probably). Plus it makes VAG money later on when they leak/fail.

You could unclip the clip, push hose in fully & clip back up. This might help. If it still leaks after, you may need new bits.

You've done the right thing by cleaning it up - makes it easier to see new leakage

That oil is from the crankcase breather system (PCV) as is normal if the elephant hose mod hasn't been done. The inter-cooler will have a fair amount of oil in it as well. Nothing to worry about if the car isn't using oil, but elephant hose mod is a sure fire way to stop more oil build up in the boost pipes.

Thanks mate

yeh i took the clip off pushed the hose back in so it was flush and fitted the clip again, the cars going in to Aweseome GTI on monday for cambelt/service so may ask them to have a quick look to see whats going on.

In the meantime il take the car out for a blast tomorrow and will check the hose for any leaks.

im hoping its fixed it self now the hose end is in its proper position.

Thanks mate, ives seen the elephant hose mod mentioned but will need to look into it now, is it easy to do?

Very easy mod, disconnect short pipe that runs from the top of the rocker cover to the inlet manifold, block off the inlet manifold connection that pipe was connected to. Fit suitable pipe to rocker cover outlet and run pipe to an oil catch can, making sure there are no sharp bends in the new pipe. Catch can will need emptied about once a month.

ok, being thick here so please forgive me

if i was to take the bend hose out to let any remaining oil drain out, would anything come gushing out? or is this hose going to the IC an air hose?
