Android version 2.3 upgrade

Featured Replies

I am currently running v2.2 on my HTC Desire and want to upgrade. I have looked in to it but it all seems very complicated! When upgrading it advises that all data will be lost if it's not backed up but I'm not sure what's the best way to do this. I downloaded Titanium backup app as recommended on the android forums but it requires the phone to be rooted which -

1. I haven't a clue how to do, and

2. would rather not do it, as a lot of people has advised against it....

Can anyone help?

Hmm, well I rooted my phone and it means that I can now do things like remote lock and wipe with Lookout Mobile Security, it also means that I can install apps on the SD card natively without the app even knowing about it. I can now install any custom ROM, and have been using Android 2.3 for months without any issue.

It wasn't difficult, just took some reading of guides :)

How old is your phone? Whether you need to use S-OFF or not is what I found makes it complicated.

The problem with the Desire (and I'm lothed to admit it as I own one) is that it has never had exactly a lot of storage available to it.

Android 2.3 actually has a quite larger footprint compared to 2.2

You can install Android 2.3 on a Desire through rooting.

However it is a "bodge" - with part of the OS being forced onto SD Card. Many people have said it's a trade-off as you lose some performance for the 2.3 features.

HTC are working on an official 2.3 update for the Desire. Because of reduced storage they are removing some of the usually pre-installed apps under Android.

HTC have the update ready to go as far as I'm aware and the major networks should be releasing it before the end of the year.

You can go the rooting route now or wait for the official release.

The only way to get 2.3 on the desire is to lose sense they said.

Or buy a newer flavour of desire.

Thanks for all the replies but it all went over my head.....:giggle:

As I understand it, when the idiot proof version is released it will be available from my network provider as an update, or am I wrong?

Assuming your phone is branded by your network operator then this is correct.... assuming the operator actually makes it available.

The 2.2 update was delayed by the operators for ages after it was released by HTC...

If it's released as an advanced user only version at the moment then I doubt the networks will entertain the idea to be honest, more hassle than it's worth for them

Looks like I'm stuck with v2.2 then, because I'm not prepared to entertain and back door shenanigans!! :giggle:

The big flaw with 2.3.3 on my Xperia X10 was there was no inbuilt backup/restore program. So I ended up backing up everything, upgrading the OS, and then not finding a backup/restore program on the new menu layout... Turns out they didn't include it. I ended up getting a program off a file-sharing site, dumping it on my phone memory card via USB, downloading a file manager app, and using that to install the backup program. Then I was able to restore all contacts, messages, etc etc. :) Complete faff but I do like 2.3.3 compared to previous versions. I even think my battery is lasting longer too.

So 2.3.3 will debrand your phone, legitimately, without need on a gold card?
