Featured Replies

Hi does anybody know where i can get my cambelt changed at a resonable price and someone i can trust.

or even if i got the tensioner and belt would someone on here who has done it before and could change it for me i will pay for your time.

Just brought a VRS and not really sure about the belt. so need it doing

you may even know the car brought from wakefield

Silver 52 plate

Black R8 alloys

Lowered 20mm

H+R Lowering springs

thanks for your help

You ideally want a full cambelt kit, with the replacement idlers and pulleys too. While you're at it, change the water pump (the plastic ones seem to be more prone to failure in the 1.8Ts), and stick on a new aux drive belt too. Best factor in a couple of litres of G12++ coolant too (don't mix the blue and purple together).

iirc, the book time for cambelt change is about 3-4 hours, if all goes smoothly. I just did my 1.9TDI over the weekend, having previously done the job 2-3 years ago, and it was still a PITA, even though I basically knew what I was doing.

There are some sponsors near you such as shark.

yeah will be changing the water pump too

a mate of mine has quoted £150 to change belt pulleys etc and water pump. i suppose not bad for 4 hours work.

spose im just a bit tight.

£150 sounds unbelievably cheap

I did mine when i first got car, they are a complete PITA to do, well the belt is easy to change it just getting to it that is a pain

Indeed, plastic trim, engine mounts, etc. On mine I have still failed how work out how to actually remove the engine the mount (even though all the bolts are undone).

For £150 I might pay someone to do it for me, but I like to know I am getting a reasonable job done, so I keep doing things myself!

My mate got his done the other day for £90! had to buy the parts, but still £90 was well cheap!

A full kit including belt tensioner, hydraulic tensioner, engine mount bolts and a new water pump wil cost £150+

I got mine done at a VAG specialist in lincoln. £160 for the genuine kit, fitting, tensioners, and metal impeller pump. Even put me fresh 5 year anti freeze in.

Bl00dy hell, your VAG specialist must have an hourly rate of about 1p/hour! :o

Where was that m8 mines due

I had mine done by a mate at it cost £190 all in, got the timing kit for £120 I didn't bother with the pump as its a tdi and my fathers has done 130k and never had a water leak but i probably should have changed it. he charged £70 fitting

how do you know they even bother to do half the stuff....or any of it?

That's my concern.

Up to £400 for a bit of paper saying it's done?

I'm not saying a garage would do that, but I bet some have

As I couldnt get mine done/quoted for less than £350, and given how long it takes to do, how can anyone have theirs done for £160 all in?

As others have said the kit alone is around £120!!!!!!!!!!

Either done it themselves or by a shadey looking caracter in shed!

Probably just for labour only?

Probably just for labour only?

Which would put it around the £300 ish mark all in, which is much more realistic.

If a garage told me they'd do it for £160 all in, I would get back in the car and never return as couldnt trust them to do the job properly - if at all!

So what was the breakdown in prices - parts vs labour?

What happens if the chap who fitted it made an error and your engine broke - who foots the bill then? I am just curious, as I do all my own work so I only have myself to blame if it goes wrong.

parts cost me £120

he works for a dealer and he know what he was doing. i dont think he would have offered if he had no idea.

but the car drives much better now. as we found out the car was slightly out last time.
