Which would you go for? Both about the same performance. Economy isn't a great issue for me due to low milage

A low mileage diesel will always be easier to sell due to rarity than a petrol

PD for resale.

PD for driveability.

PD for tuning.

Don't all FSI engines require 98 RON e.g. Shell Optimax or similar to give of their best? Optimax is usually at least as costly as diesel round here.

I can't comment on the 105hp diesel with dsg - but having driven the 140hp with DSG in the A3 - its a fantastic combination.

The TDi will be more reliable than the FSi - the performance figures might not be very different,I suspect the PD will "Feel" the quicker due to the better torque characterisitcs.

If it were me chosing I would have the PD -NO CONTEST

Yes they require Optimax or similar to run in stratified mode - otherwise its just a very complex standard 4 cyl - which isnt very reliable.

We have seen cars as low as 50k that require full de-coke - mainly due to unsuitable driving styles and the lack of 98ron fuel.

To give their best probably yes - but for short runs you're hardly likely to use that extra power anyway... (unless you do drag racing ;) )

I have been concerned about choosing the 1.6MPI for a long time, the extra power AND fuel economy of the FSI Made me think i made a bad choice, but If they are like that then I'm glad I got the MPI, Which I find to be very smooth, quiet and has a awsome engine note.

If you are looking at a similar purchase price then it would have to be 1.9PD.

The Diesel will offer better economy and better resale value.

They may have similar outright performance but on the road the diesel will feel far stronger and will be far quicker in gear due to the extra torque.

114lbft@4000rpm for the 1.6FSi and 184lbft@1900rpm for the 1.9PD

And if you feel like more power, the PD will be easy and cheap to mod but the FSi will leave you without any cheap options for a noticable increase in power.

The DSG box would be a limiting factor - it has a torque limit which cannot be overcome,but it may be possible to "Alter" the torque curve to give a slight improvement - you would be able to see a benefit - probably to around a little more than the 2.0 140pd.

Had a 02 octavia with 1.6 engine and now have 1.9 pd octavia. The diesel engine is by far the best way to go.

They appear to be fine if driven hard and high miles - we've seen them over 150,000 miles no problem.

BUT if they are being driven low miles easy they suffer - which is the case for most Audi's they just are not meant to be driven like that - but the FSi esp the 2.0 FSi take it badly - a lot of people "Run them in" which just isnt needed and quite frankly causes more problems than it prevents then you've got the brigade that dont even know there car will rev above 2,500 rpm :rolleyes:

I agree absolutely with you about velvet glove running in and never using max. revs. I've had 3 Audi 1.9 TDi's since 1992 all non PD, they've all been 'run-in' briskly progressively increasing max. revs. by 500 so they are being red-lined but not abused from 3000 miles. I am sure the often heard complaint about TDi oil consumption is usually due to poor running in. Oil consumption on these engines has never been an issue for me. On variable service my A6 has consistently gone 2 years and 23k and used a litre of 506.01 between services, adding half a litre when needed to bring back to the top of the dip stick marking.

I have been to test drive both these cars today 1.9 TDI PD dsg Box ......................WOW... what a gear box!!! :thumbup: Fully Auto,then into manual mode (while on the move) then sports mode. Excellent pick up Good fuel economy Took it back after 20 minuites and jumped into the 1.6 FSI. Drove it down the road after 5 minuites took it back, sorry not for me

How come my brothers Clio 172 is the same 0-60 as mine yet it only has 150 lb/ft of torque compared with my 320 lb/ft & 195 bhp, surely 250 kg more in weight shouldnt mean it has the same 0-60/midrange, but it does.

Need to read up a bit more on gearing, power to weight ratios and the fact that petrol is a lot more explosive than diesel m'thinks :D

There are a lot of factors in how a car will perform - weight,gearing,final drive ratio,traction and also how and when the power/torque is developed.

You could have 2 cars the same weight both producing 150bhp and 150lb/ft and one might still be quicker to 60 - it depends wether its top end torque or bottom end torqu and a whole load of other factors

Ok, just been reading this thread with interest. I am debating going for a 1.9tdi estate, but can have the 2.0 tdi estate for an extra 1400 quid. My question is weather it is worth paying the extra for the 2.0 tdi?

The answer if performance is important YES - if your more after economy then stick with the 1.9.

Just incase anyone intrested, the diesel's have better towing caperbilites.

ok, sounds like the 2.0 is going to be the one then. Will have to book a test drive asap
