OCTY RS estate VS the saloon

Featured Replies

ok people i know i am going to buy an octyRS

Iam toying with the idea of getting the estate, just so i can scare people silly when the realise thay just had there ass whooped by a skoda estate.

i have test drove the saloon but not the estate,

what are the differances in power/handling/performance and everything general :D

oh BTW i dont need an estate for anything, since i am single and still live with me parents lolol ;)

Most important thing of the lot if you get an estate the water wont run into the boot when you open the back door :D apart from that I have never driven a VRS but the estate is easier to park and the rear suspension may be a little harder.

Power wise, the estate is the same as the hatchback.

Another thing to consider, the estate comes with 16" wheels and the hatch has 17" wheels. Skoda say that fitting 17" wheels on the estate is a nono because it is missing the extra bracing at the rear that the hatch has.

agree that my estate is easier to park than a saloon simply because the rear vision is better. oh and i do enjoy seeing the look of dismay when i beat em in my estate, my plain debadged white estate with towbar :D roll on jabba!

In terms of performance there's bott all difference between the two. However the estate doesn't handle quite aswell as the hatch imo possibly due to the extra travel on the rear suspension.

I've now got the estate due to a growing family but I actually think it looks better than the hatchback version apart from the piddly 16" wheels. I ditched them in favour of a set of 18's anyway but am still at a loss to see what Skoda are actually banging on about in their recommendation to limiting wheel size to 16" on the estate version.

your est looks good.. right wheels right height....

shame its not red....

Think the estate is 0.1 seconds slower than the saloon and top speed of 143 as opposed to 146(standard vRS before the big boys share their scary top speeds!!)mph

Nothing in it and they both look mighty fine.Just choose which shape you prefer

Jimmy's car looks absolutely ace - better IMHO than a similarly attired saloon. Subtle, understated mean-ness. Does justice to the great basic design. Pics please Jimmy!

I put mine on the Rollers and got 190bhp as opposed to the other guys who got in the range of 180-183.

... And I get a decent rear view through the mirror.

My Skoda dealer pout 17"s on mine too, without any hassle.

VRS Hatch - vRS Estate

Alloys: 17" Spider - 16" Spider

Kerb weight: 1375kg - 1390kg

Max speed: 146mph - 143mph

0-62mph: 7.9secs - 8.0secs

Fuel consumption: Same

Drag coefficient: 0.29 - 0.31

Luggage storage space*:

- with rear seat upright: 528 litres - 548 litres

- with rear seat down: 1328 litres - 1512 litres

* NB: The Estate does not have the intrusive strut braces in the boot area which the Hatch has.

For me the lack of water dripping into the boot would swing the choice firmly towards the Estate. :D

Some piccies:

yea the estate looks fab, Jimmy's with the 18in wheels looks great  but so does the hatch, personal choice really!

Jimmy has your car been lowered?

Kenny, Stock suspension atm

wow the stock suspension height suits 18" wheels pretty good... do you have any side shots of the car? did the wheels effect the handling at all and what width and tyre size did you go for?

Only other side piccie I've got is below:

The lower profile does make the ride a bit firmer and the wider tyres do mean it tends to follow cambers in the road a bit more but nothing too upsetting. As a whole I'd say it's an improvement although there are limitations with the stock suspension. Tyres are 225/40/18's...

in hindsight i sort fo wish id gone for an estae i thikn tehy look great and i alwasy have liked estates..

speaking of bracing what happened to that octavia estate boot strut that was going about? did a final version ever get made? did it work?

Get an estate - they look so much nicer :p

so des neone know if the VRs is included in the 24 hour test drive, would be interesting

If I were buying today, I'd probably get the estate. However, I would change the wheels for 17s, maybe 18s.

The New Octavia 4X4 Estate comes with 15" wheels as standard, so it will be interesting to see what size they put on the New vRS Estate - assuming there is to be one. The New Octavia 4X4 Estate I saw at a dealer on Tuesday didn't look quite right on those wheels, although the tyres did look very chunky.

Never really understood why the Vrs wasn't 4x4....... I assume the new one will be FWD which, is a shame.

Another vote for the estate here

I fitted the 17" vRS alloy's to mine (thanks Paul) and think it looks great, also got a Miltek exhaust fitted (thanks Huck) which finishes off the rear :)

PS not the best pic, must take some new ones
