MDI retrofit

MDI now working perfectly. I did have a problem with it not recognising the hard drive when starting up without unplugging and plugging the mini-usb plug back into it, but that now seems to have fixed itself.

Haven't checked if the fault code on the MDI mentioned earlier can be cleared without recurring now, but there are no obvious symptoms of a problem.

Then that's a bargain. But then you could be lucky and pick a Parrot kit up for less on eBay :)

If you can point me to another setup for that price, I'll probably buy one as well.

The point I'm making is that if you're comparing the retail cost of each system, there's a bit of a difference....

Yes but the Parrot is inferior. They do come up at that price quite a lot - keep looking. Took me four weeks to secure one at the right price.

The point >I'm< making is that why go to the trouble of fitting an inferior aftermarket phone kit when you can fir the factory option? If it's puely cost then why bother fitting an MDI when you could just use the Aux input! Does not make sense IMHO - if you have the facility, why not use it and benefit from the integration?

Retail cost is irellevant - can't remember the last time i paid "retail" for anything!

With regard to the MDI, its working fine now but occasionally when I first start the car it doesn't seem to see the HD until I unplug it and plug it back in. I thought this was sorted but is still happening from time to time. Anyone else had that?

Also does anyone know when the MDI powers down the HD (or other media device)? From the HD LED it doesn't seem to simply power down immediately when the radio or ignition is turned off, but clearly doesn't power it continuously if the car is left overnight. Anyone know?

What HDD are you using?

And yes, it'll fully power down a few moments after the car's been locked and alarmed. Best thing to do is if you can have the drive out and visible when you lock the car, then you'll be able to see how long it takes for the drive activity light to go off. For your peace of mind..

Thanks for clearing that up, I was curious really, I know it powers down eventually.

*could* be an issue with the firmware on that drive, with it handling the request properly to pick up where it left off. Know anyone else with this drive, using it on the MDI?

On the power-down - sure, just that way you'll know for sure what happens, and how long it takes emoticon-0148-yes.gif

No I don't know of anyone else using a similar one.

Interested in this concept of knowing where it left off as that's not really part of the functionality of the (or any) HDD surely, although I agree the Bolero/MDI does pick up where it left off.

Does the Bolero/MDI write to the drive?

I'm in the same situation now....... MDI fitted, charges ipod touch and says "Accessory connected" on the ipod screen but no sign of the the MDI on the Bolero..... and to top it all off i've got the airbag warning light on after disconnecting the passenger airbag switch in the glovebox.....

Sounds as though you'll need to code the MDI and reset the airbag in VCDS. Coding the MDI is covered earlier in this thread.

Yeah thought so, i've put a post in the VCDS forum in the hope someone local to me will help me out.....

Hope you get it sorted soon. I've finally got my whole CD collection in the car on the hard drive (after re-ripping some stuff with DRM applied and retagging a load of others) and its great.

Only taken 14 months since I set out originally to try and do this with a 32Gb SD card.....

If nobody volunteers to help you could find someone on the list in your area and ask them nicely directly.

All sorted now that to Mike (mikeholroyd) Top guy!

Great news.

The moral of this story is if you retrofit an MDI from now on it will probably need coding with VCDS

Yep. Once it was working there was a slight pause in the music after the first second on the track so did a search for that and found a newer version of the firmware should fix that, updated it and it seems to be working perfectly. :)

I'm looking at retrofitting an MDI lead from the back of my Bolero into my glovebox on a Sep 2010 Scout. This is the kit I'm planning to buy. I see that the part number is 5N0 035 342E. It specifically states "Kit for cars with AUX-IN"

Can anyone see any "gotchas" with this kit before I commit buying it and shipping it to NZ?

I'm assuming that the whole black rectangular box with the part number on it ends up floating around in your glovebox. How do people recommend it is actually mounted in the glovebox (or is there another part needed for this)?

To install properly there is a mounting bracket required that fixes to a rail behind the glove box to which the black box fits to, however I just tie wrapped mine in place.

Thanks very much. Am I right in thinking the CD changer is an external box that you typically mount under a seat or in the boot? If so, it's no issue for me, as I don't have one of these, I just have the 6-CD set-up, built in to the Bolero head unit itself.

Does anyone have the part number for the mounting bracket mentioned above?

Having read the thread linked to above, I'm wondering if routing the MDI to the "ashtray" underneath the climate controls, while less "OEM", might be more practical? What's access like from there to the back of the stereo?

The only realistic way to get to the back of the stereo is to remove the stereo. Pretty easy really.

To get down to the ashtray, remove the air con panel as well (4 screws and 3 clips behind it).

Ashtray comes out easily you'll see the screw for the ashtray holder as well.

All pretty easy.

Most modern mobiles won't fit in the ashtray if you want to close the lid at the same time. I've tried.

What about locating it in the drop box to the RHS of the steering wheel?

What about locating it in the drop box to the RHS of the steering wheel?

Interesting idea, I'll give it some thought. I don't really use that cubby hole for anything right now, and it would certainly be handy. Might even be easier than the glovebox route.

I'm wondering if an even tidier solution would be to mount the MDI in the jumbo box between the seats. Would this adapter kit fit in a jumbo box? And if so, is the adapter compatible with this MDI kit?

The adapter kit includes the MDI box as well!

All you need on top of that are the cables.

My research says it won't fit in the Skoda Jumbo Box as it was never designed to take the 6 disc CD changer like the Golf armrest was.

I'm sure there are ways of putting one in though. For example, there is a Flylead extension trim which neatens up the edges of a hole drilled for the cable from the box to the phone/USB drive.

The Skoda OEM location is in a specially designed glovebox. I believe it will accommodate the cage in your first link, but have never seen one (can any one post a picture of an MDI glovebox?)

The armrest and back part of the Golf Jumbo Box should fit an Octavia, but the front part (from armrest to gear stick) might not. I don't know of anyone who has done it yet.

Am I right in thinking that, with an MDI installed and connected to an iPhone, upon an incoming call all that will happen is the phone will ring and the music will stop? Will the ringtone come through the speakers, and if I answer the call, will the sound come through the speakers (although the person on the other end of the line won't hear me very well because the phone will be somewhere stupid like the glovebox)?

I was gonna have the MDI installed but might not bother now that the bolero SD card issue appears fixable (will find out Saturday I guess).
