MDI retrofit

Featured Replies

So I picked up the MDI for £55 on ebay last week, a USB cable for £9 and a harness for £35. Fitted today. It should have been easy but fitting the damn harness in behind the radio took a lot of patience. In the end I moved the CAN Gateway to the right of the glovebox, between the glovebox and the radio, and mounted the MDI unit behind the bracket the CAN Gateway sits in. I then used a dremel to cut a small hole in the glovebox and drop the USB cable into it.

500gb HD in place and working nicely.

I have VCDS but the Bolero detected the MDI instantly and no programming was required.

Hello all.

I have just bought the full MDI (5N0 035 342E) kit for my Octy L&K sept 2010 model. Which I intend to use with an iPod

What is the likelyhood of my car needing coding ? (it uses the Bolero (6CD built-in) model of radio ,and how easy is it to do ?

I am an electronics technician by trade so would have no problem in doing the coding, However I currently have no CANBUS connectivity, and dont really wish to buy it just for this purpose.

I am wondering of there are any kind folk near me who can help if I get stuck.

I live in the Stansted area (work in Cambridge)

Pete

Look at the VCDS members map Pete, for people in your area. I'm sure someone will be able to assist.

Best to fit it with VCDS available in my experience, just so you can check everything's setup properly and you can avoid any issues.

Hi All

I have today fitted the MDI Socket to my Octy. I chose to mount the socket in the glovebox.

I had a couple of hitches however which I didnt expect.

1) The radio "forgot" its code, I rang the dealer about this and they said I had to take the car in to get this sorted.

however after leaving the radio connected for a while, it sorted itself. Presumably it had to re-read the data stored in the ECU

2) finding a position for the short extension lead at the back of the Bolero unit was fun (NOT)

I did need to code the MDI, fortunately my local car repair guy had VCDS. No real problems

there,I did get one fault code for the Media device however.

Exactly the same as the guy that posted earlier in this thread, Regarding "AUX open or short to ground".

Managed to correct that in the long coding for the media player device.

One question however, Am I correct in thinking that after the MDI install, the AUX socket in my jumbo box no longer functions,

and that if I want to connect a device with a 3.5mm jack, I need to buy the MDI to jack cable.

Pete

There are specific MDI kits for cars with factory AUX-in. However MDI/AUX don't work at the same time, meaning MDI takes AUX out and viceversa, you can find this in your radio manual.

I have retrofitted MDI and my AUX still works. If I want to use my AUX I need to disconnect the MDI device (iPod). Once iPod is disconnected, AUX appears below "media" button. Once iPod is reconnected MDI appears and AUX dissapears.

Can you remember exactly what you did? I've still got that fault code!

Hi Juan27

I went into the long coding for the media player 2E and

found just two configurable options.

One for AUX enabled

and one for RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment)

At first I tried simply to change the AUX enabled to off, but the coding value was not accepted.

So I then tried setting the RSE value to on. This cleared all faults.

I now have the AUX and RSE functions enabled.

AUX does still appear on the radio when there is no MDI device attached, but it seems that the jumbo box AUX socket no longer functions.

Do I need the MDI cable with a 3.5 MM socket instead, maybe someone can confirm this.

I will post the relevant scans for my vehicle later for you.

I don't have the file available on this computer.

I forgot to mention, my MDI unit is part number 5N0 035 342E

Does anyone know if you can get the loom that fits into the existing large radio connector without the large plug loom (this is where i see the cost is)? i remember moving the blue plug from the original large plug to to my parret loom (i have MDI already but planning on fitting it to my blackline). the large plugs aren't needed as far as i see. just need blue plug to MDI loom not the large plug loom (easy to fit too).

This but not the large plugs http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1439.l2649

like this but with the MDI plug to go into the interface. http://www.carsystems.pl/wiring-for-vw-audi-cd-changer-5-5m-quadlock,id48.html

I believe the CD changer is lost if you have MDI.

Do you think it would be cheeky to remove my MDI before I tradein the car next week, trouble is there will be a hole in the glovebox?

Vw caddy vans have an mdi blanking plate :-)

I believe the CD changer is lost if you have MDI.

I believe there is a way of wiring the loom so that you can retain the CD changer, but I have yet to try the advice I was given on this forum for myself with my MDI retrofit.

I need to take my parrot out of my car now ready for the Blackline. I will have a look at how the factory fit is installed if that helps. Maybe the cable I need has a part number on it?

The cable I needed was the 50 one well 35 off the polish car systems

OK so I checked my current MDI install and this is what I found:-

at the stereo end there is a blue plug that fits into the large square connector

1=PURPLE=AUX IN NFL

2=WHITE=AUX IN GND

4=RED=CDX DAUR +

7=BLUE=AUX IN NFR

at the MDI end (wound tight in to existing loom so not sure if standard or not):-

1=BROWN

2=ORANGE/BLACK STRIPE

4=BLUE

5=GREEN

6=YELLOW

7=RED

8=ORANGE/PURPLE STRIPE

9=PURPLE

10=WHITE

11=BROWN

12=BLACK

Would be good if someone knew what all these wires were and if they are all needed.

According to http://www.my-gti.com/1319/volkswagen-rcd-310-pin-assignments :

1 – AUX signal input, left

2 – AUX signal earth

3 – CD changer, audio signal earth

4 – CD changer, voltage supply, positive, terminal 30, contact continuous load greater than 1 A, temporary peak load 5 A

5 – Not assigned

6 – CD changer, DATA OUT

7 – AUX signal input, right

8 – CD changer, left audio channel, CD/L

9 – CD changer, right audio channel, CD/R

10 – CD changer, control line, switched positive

11 – CD changer, DATA IN

12 – CD changer, CLOCK (internal check protocol for data flow monitoring)

I think these are pretty standard across VAG.

The cable I've ordered for my retro-fit doesn't have the blue connector....

2 x quadlock and 1 x Holder connector (for the thing that your device connects too / what the Golfs have in the arm rest)

Beaten to it...

(for the thing that your device connects too / what the Golfs have in the arm rest)

The Golf one in the armrest is an identical controller but with an extra mounting cage. These are removable, but many have struggled.

These mounts are not really of use on a Skoda as there is nowhere to mount it without a lot of faff.

And yes, the quad lock pin allocations are standard across all recent VAG cars.

Beaten to it...

Always good to know I'm not always talking bollards! ;)

Thanks again Pete that seems to have worked on mine too! Finally got round to looking at it today as the car was going to the garage for an unrelated fault code and I didn't want the MDI one muddying the waters or causing them confusion.

  • 8 months later...

I have a bolero with factory fitted aux in and ive retrofitted the 9w7 bluetooth kit.

I recently purchased this MDI kit which preserves the aux in function.

http://www.carsystem...342e,id299.html

Now it looks like i have replace the bluetooth wiring loom with the new MDI one..Right?? Im  confused as to how to go about this

Is there anyway i can have all the functions (CD/AUX/SD/MDI/BT-AUDIO)??

Aux will double up as mdi if you put the mdi loom in between the radio and bt loom. That is with the mdi unconnected, aux will be an option.

To keep the cd you need to add a wire to the loom. Can't remember which off hand but I have a link on my mrs' laptop which will help. Pm me and I will send it to you when I have access to it after 15 July.

Regards

Adam
