Diesel 4x4 Yeti in the wet at Castle Coombe

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just a quick update on today. I took Elsie the Helipad on the Briskoda Track action day at Castle Coombe today.

As we were lining up on the gird, waiting for our session to start, the weather was dark grey cloud. It had been dry all morning. just before our session it started to rain. My prayers were answered emoticon-0136-giggle.gif.

The track was wet and greasy.

I can happily demonstrate how great the CR140 4x4 DSG (remapped and with flappy paddles) performed on the track. My forward facing camera recorded the events, but the data was rewritten over on the way home.

But, the rear facing camera is probably more interesting anyway, as you can see how much earlier I was able to get the power down compared to the FWD cars. They might have 100bhp or more on Elsie, but if they can't put the power down........

I will post some video's on Youtube over the next few of days when I can get away from swimbo, as she is complaining about me having been away all day & wants some attention!!!!

There are some interesting videos of cars spinning and coming off the track as well emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Elsie was magnificent. I felt so much more relaxed this time and enjoyed it more.

Sounds EXCITING emoticon-0137-clapping.gif

When can we see the videos???

Looking forward to seeing these.

Shame you didn't save the front footage/switch the camera off before overwriting/stick in another card though.

The card is lab led as a 16GB and should save 3 days. The computer says it is 4GB.....It is a Sandisk micro SD. Need to spend some time investigating more to see if soothing silly has happened. Anyway, You are right......I didn't realise it didn't save enough data as not checked it for months.emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Does anybody on Briskoda still not know that Rockhopper has a re-mapped Yeti with flappy paddles? - although I think there was one post in July when he didn't mention it!

Sorry Rockhopper, only joking, I always enjoy your posts.

Malc

Have you got the power figures for your remapped CR 140 Rockhopper?

Dyno graph maybe?

No problem!

There are many new members turning up every week now, so, not every one does.....

Only from AMD....which Ben ,Octygone and myself don't believe. It said 166bhp. Octygone's CR110 was at 156bhp and 900000's was at 145bhp, (roughly)

Octygone has had JKM test it and it came out at 175bhp.

I will one day visit Ben at Shark with his new rolling road and see what it is really putting out.

Make sure you use the flappy paddles so you get an accurate result! :giggle:

Looking forward to seeing the vids from CC

Looking forward to seeing the vids from CC

There are about 10, all 1 minute long. Just loading into iMovie from Aperture at the moment, then I will trim and add together, rather than have 10 separate videos.

Looks great. Not watched the video yet but good to hear the 4x4 traction did its bit!

What was amazing is there was a Seat Cupra with a remapped 1.4tsi engine (circa 210bhp & much lighter car). It couldn't get away from me, on the long straights it would pull away, but then on the corners I would reel it back in and get the power down much earlier, so it couldn't get away emoticon-0136-giggle.gif.

I can only imagine what FocusZetec's SM would have been like.....emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Its about useable power and getting it down. You had the right package for the conditions I reckon Mike.

I like the video, the Fabia vRS coming off on that right hander at ~90mph must of been an experience for the driver! I've come off onto wet grass on the Nurburgring and it actually feels like you're speeding up.

To be honest, I don't think he would have been doing 90mph there. I only managed to do 90mph by the end of the straight, and the CR170 vRS Octavia's only managed about 100mph at the end of the straight. I suspect it was more in the region of 60mph. Even so, a brown trouser moment emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

You can see approx what speed I was doing if you watch using the YouTube site, rather than the embedded link.

Now that was entertaining!

the vids from the fabia boys were interesting. Some good sideways action going on.

I assume no such problems in your yeti?

Were the others surprised?

I am not sure I would draw too many firm conclusions from the day. I've done a lot of track days over the years and have humbled GT3 Porsches and been blitzed by Novas, So many variables- wet/dry, experience, knowledge of track, tyres, tyre pressures, brakes etc etc. They are a bit of fun and every time I have convinced myself I am the Stig hubris has intervened and I have either spun or been annihilated by a shopping car hot hatch

I guess all I'm trying to say is that the 4x4 made all the difference in the wet on the day. If you watch some of the video's you can see that most of the 2WD cars were struggling to go round the corners, with a few spectacularly not doing so. emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Almost any 4x4 would have been fairly quick in those conditions. FocusZetec with his remapped 1.8tsi would have been much faster than me.

 Sums my experiences up perfectly!

Nice vid, glad you found the rear wiper
