Rumour has it that they're rubbish. Just standard parts, painted a pretty colour. Si VXR fitted one a while back, and got some flaming for it. I bumped the thread asking for his opinion on it after running it in, and he hasn't said anything....which to me speaks volumes.

seems that way...... but the SMF option looks more intriguing, if they are good I'm sure more people would be running them.

I'm going to begrudge spending £1k on a clutch/flywheel, it's a quarter of the value of the car after all!

Can't access at work but I burned out a "400 lb/ft" kevlar clutch whilst just running about 240hp / 340 lb/ft with my old Allard VT5. It did give up doing abusive 1/8 mile drag runs, but still.... Not good at all, especially considering it was £600 odd.

Due to other threads on here Im not wanting to get into power figures :giggle: but for example would a Helix organic clutch with SMF hold up to the job of a Stage 2 PD150 hybrid turbo remapped (not on a restricted map) with all the supporting mods?

has anyone on here ran either of these with higher power?

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4158d71a2d

be interesting to see how it'd hold up with their double priced counterparts.....

Jake

I'd be interested to see how that second one holds up. Especially considering that it's not much more expensive than a new OE clutch + DMF

that was exactly my reasoning for quierying it...

anyone fancy being a guinea pig?! :p

It's just a standard clutch isn't it? With a solid flywheel

In answer to Chris, yeah the helix will be fine for that setup

Helix and smf

Had a sachs and dmf, sachs held up no problem but dmf was dead after 20k

Cool cheers - where from mate?

mardigras motorsport

cheapest you'll find

Think I've decided to stick with Sachs, as I've already got the Sachs Race Engineering cover so I can save a few hundred quid by keeping that and just replacing the friction plate, flywheel, and probably the release bearing (seems daft not to for what they cost and it's an important bit, not just a £300 peice of metal like the cover). Plus a Jabba 8.5kg flywheel (Sachs SMF is 7.4kg) to cut down the idle chatter.

I assume the weight of an SMF won't affect its reliability or performance? i.e. a heavier SMF still be able to handle as much abuse as a lighter SMF?

Helix make 2 weights of smf

The organic helix is more than enough rated to 440lb/ft

Wouldnt fancy living with a paddle clutch 24/7

Smf chatter is fine.... Depress the clutch = noise gone

I emailed Mardi Gras Motorsport as well to ask about the weight of their SMF. I'm tempted to replace the whole lot, but it's an unexpected cost which is going to have to go on credit, so if I can save a few hundred quid by reusing one of the components I've got then I'll probably go with that. It'll still be the Sachs organic plate, not the paddle plate, although the ratings are hard to work out. When I bought one for my Leon about a year ago, it was rated for around 410lb/ft, now some people are saying they're only rated for 380lb/ft. Either way, BossFox said above that he wouldn't want to use his car daily with the paddle, so I'll trust his judgement :)

As for the noise, it's hard to tell from videos and stuff, but I'm trying to cut down any extra noise to a minimum. It's alright saying clutch pressed = no noise, but if I'm sat in traffic then I probably can't be arsed to hold the clutch down all the time. Plus I've got used to leaving the car on the turbo timer if I come home late at night after a hard drive so it gets a minute of sitting on the driveway while I disappear inside, and I want to be a little bit considerate to the neighbours :) I'm not going to get another DMF because if I want more power later on then I'll just end up killing that one as well, but I want the quietest SMF I can find :)

Thats the reason Im going for Helix mate - i've heard two in real life (as tbh they sound horrendous in the videos) and they're really not that bad! And topping up the gearbox oil is meant to help :) they're certainly no worse than an old diesel for example my mates old Pug 306 is louder.

I've also found somewhere cheaper than Mardi Gras Motorsport ;)

Quitest smf = less power

Not a great deal though

Sachs organic is fine for the power its the dmf thats rubbish

To be honest I havent compared between Sachs & Helix clutches - just heard a Helix one in real life. Is the Sachs one much louder?

I dont intend to go massive power, so Helix organic & SMF should be fine for me :)

Is that inc. VAT?

Well, at the moment it only needs to cope with 330lb/ft. But I'm thinking ahead to if I change injectors for a bit more power, I had planned to keep this car at least 4 years and I've only had it 6 months so far. So if I go a bit OTT on the clutch now then it'll save me money on replacing it again in the long run and I'll still be able to run more torque with a heavy SMF than an original DMF.

I don't actually know anyone with an SMF to have a listen to, I've only heard videos so it's actually pretty difficult to tell (i.e. one guy videoed his in an underground concrete carpark, so obviously there's nowhere for sound to escape to and everything sounds insanely loud anyway). Plus the differences between mics on different cameras and the fact they all pick up noises differently anyway, I'm going to have to try and find someone locally who has one I think.

Ive had 3 helix's and smf's on 3 pd130's

One at 176bhp

One at 220bhp

And another at 267bhp

All coped easily

Yup £790 to my door all in

In that case you win mate :giggle:

Can you get me one? lol

I have jase`s old sachs clutch, which is designed for the standard DMF, then I found a jabbasport (i think) SMF on its own on ebay. Stuck it all in and hey presto lol. Coping with my 200 odd bhp ok at the moment

Matt

Ah so the sachs with dmf can marry up to an smf? Never knew that!!

I can get you a helix mate but you'd obviously have to transfer me the £ etc.... Last time i think i got a 10 or 15% discount

Probs a bit more now as vat is 20% rather than the 15% of last year

Cheers Jase - I've tried sending you a PM but it says you cant receive any?
