MOT pass with Brake Advisory

Featured Replies

OK so my Octy 1.9 tdi 130BHP passed its latest mot with 134k miles and all i had was advisory for Front Brakes , which are the Original set . Advisory says RBT Front Brake Imbalance 21% , only just meet imbalance requirements .Front brake discs wearing thin . They have quoted me £171 to replace discs and Pads . I did the rears myself a few months back , and have already costed a Front set from eurocarparts with 30% discount for £55 . I assume , a full front replacement will sort the Advisory ref Brake Inbalance . Is that correct .

Yeah it will do, worn out brakes can cause an inbalence,

Might not hurt to change brake fluid at same time if its never been done, altho it may be advised to get garage to use a pressure bleeder to do that, heard it can bugger seals up in master cylinder doing it manually

Yes agree forgot that bit they quoted an extra £35 to do the Brake Fluid change . So i will check with my local to see if they will just do the Brake fluid change After ive fitted the brakes . Any extra tools from those i used on the Rears , know i dont need to rewind the piston , but could use the same tool just to push back in . And obviously no hand brake cable to mess with . Are the Pad sensors just a connection . Thanks

**** easy todo and yes it is just a connector. No extra tools need (providing you have a caliper tool)

Pads seized in the carriers or uneven tyre pressures will give an imbalance reading on the rollers

Fronts are easy. I just needed a socket drive alley key (7mm, iirc for the FSIII capilers), and that was it. The pistons just push back in (I used a g-clamp).

The hardest part is unclipping the plug for the brake wear indicator.

Clean up the calipers and check the pistons move OK when you change the pads/discs.

Mine had a similar front brake imbalance advisory in 2010, although the pads were good.(& there was no perceptible "imbalace" feel when driving)

So I did nothing about it........... & this year it passed with no advisories.

And in my case, it wouldn't have been tyre pressure problems as they are always checked weekly & rarely loose any pressure.

I think the tester was having a bad day & being picky, he put an advisory for chips in the windscreen...& they were literally minescule.

Fussy old fuss-pot!

Thnaks on the 288 mm disc set up do i need to undo the 2 bolts which hold the caliper carrier to the hub , to get the Discss out

They just about clear the hub and carrier and slide out once the caliper and pads are removed.

If you were quoted for Eicher products I would check around the net for opinions on both their discs and pads before buying them. Changing them is pretty easy.

Our Lupo was the same this year. Stripped/cleaned the calipers, it feels no different, though maybe the one piston was a bit less free to push out/back. We'll see what happens at the next test.

Just to confirm have you done this with the 288 mm disc , do not like the idea of having to start and then find i need to take the main braket bolts out . thanks

Yes, but it is tight and the disks were worn, the originals went back on.

Whats wrong with removing the carriers, cleaning them and refitting them anyway? Any rust on the carrier / pad mating surfaces will prevent the pads from clearing the disks after releasing them.

Your existing pads will be partially seized in the carrier, thats why you got the inbalance in the first place IMO

Unbolting the carriers isn't that hard.
