A Good diesel sounds better than a mediocre petrol

I quote "I'm pretty confident that a good diesel sounds lot better than a mediocre petrol. Especially a rather mainstream four pot VAG 2.0 "

Funniest thing i have heard in a while.

Well its bound to......

A mediocre petrol would need to be well knackered to sound anything like a Diesel.

agreed, if you like the sound of a tractor.

WTF, my 1976 Triumph Dolomite 1300 was quieter and more refined than any diesel I have owned !

I like diesels however...

Ha, ha f**king ha.

A derv doesn't sound great, you buy it for the MPG etc.

A nicely designed V12 or V8 (esp with superchargers) sounds great and a v6 sounds nice too. The 4 pot isn't great, but then neither is a 4 pot derv.

hehehe my CR is quieter than my petrol bike :D but thats not a good thing come to think of it my spare car is the same :(

Is it wrong to actually like the sound of diesel engines?

I mean don't get me wrong... love the roar of a nice v6, v8 or v12 etc etc but diesel's just sound good to me.

Especially with a bit of turbo whistle!

No accounting for taste...

Go try a CR...sounds nothing like a Miserly Ferguson

Have you not heard the new CR Massy Fergusons?

My Octavia sounds better than my BMW boxer with all its 'characteristic' whining, clanking and clunking. Until you open it up and do a wheelie at 80mph. Accidentally I swear.

I actually think a vRS CR is quieter at idling than a TFSI.

That's probably debatable but I bet it doesn't sound better at 6000rpm....

But lets face it 4cyl petrol or diesel VW engines are hardly famous for being aurally stimulating (stop that tittering at the back).

Anyway this guy (see OP's quote) is "pretty confident" - what does that mean? Either he thinks it sounds better or not. Is he a saying something like "I'm 42% sure that a good diesel sounds better....."

Comes down to personal preference in the end but I'll take some convincing after 10 years previously of CR diesel motoring that I would actively prefer a diesel for the noise it makes.

Fair play they're a lot smoother/quieter than they used to be but an absence of harshness is not the same as a sound that brings pleasure.

At those revs the only sound you will hear is a large BANG

+1

I used to like to sound of my old straight 6 530d engine at about 130kph, travelling through france. The CR140 engine doesn't have that satisfying hum like the 6cyl did.

IMO the TFSI engine is pretty anodyne sonically compared to something with 6 cylinders whatever configuration, or indeed anything with 4 cylinders from Italy; but worse than a diesel..surely not. Even the BM 6 cyl diesel sounds agricultural next to a 1.6 Focus, even if it does have a deep chested thrum about it. Mind you, I know which one I'd rather have. In the real world, for petrol music, you can't beat the Alfa V6 before Fiat messed with the head.
