would 215/60/17 snow tyres fit the yeti.

No. Way too big.

I say that because the std 215/60 R16's are already slightly larger than the 225/50 R17's

Check on one of the many wheel size comparison sites mentioned in TP's wheel & rim guide

They may fit but would introduce a speedo error which you would have to calculate and allow for. There is a useful calculator in the car bible http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html

From a quick look it seems it may cause an over-read of 3.5mph at 70.

Hmm-if that is right my car would actually show the speed more accurately!

Someone will tell me if that is wrong. Otherwise it may be a very decent plan.

I did that on my old discovery. The speedo under read by 4% and I put all terrains on that corrected by 3.5% so it was much more accurate.

Thanks a lot for the link, very interesting and absolutely useful reading!

205/50/R17 93H on 6Jx17 ET45 rims are the approved 17" winter option for the Yeti.

This is a nice visual indicator and % change calculator webpage for tyre sizes

I've just bitten the bullet and ordered Vredstein Wintrac Extremes in 225/50 R17 - I like my alloys with winter tyres, not nasty cheap steels! (you can argue that smaller steels, narrower tyres are functionally better but 225 Wintracs on alloys look good and still whoop normal tyres when cold)

I ordered some of those and they arrived the day before the SM

I wanted the Vreds last year but was too late, buying in November, so got Yokohama W-drive instead; still got 225/50 17s on my Spitzbergs. They look great and drive well.

Looking at this combination for the SM: Wintertyre-Hakka7-215-60-16.jpgWheelInterAction65x16Yeti.jpg

I am using NonStudded Hakkapeliitta R 205/55R16 on the Octavia, these works great. But I think studded Hakka7 will be even better for the SM.

......The studded would be great for the Scandinavian countries where you're pretty much guaranteed [LOTS] snow. Unfortunately can't use them over here.

I do have a set of 10" Hakkas though somewhere. :o

I know you're not allowed to use studded tyres here but I also know that plenty people do use them. All the courtesy cars from West End garage in Uphall (plus all their staff) were using studded winters last year. I discussed the point a few times with their service manager and he insisted they'd checked it out and believed that studs were allowed.

If the tyre causes either damage to the road, or to persons, or to any vehicle using the road. This would cover such instances as if a vehicle with damaged or very oversized tyres which either caught against a person or other vehicle resulting in either damage or injury. Studded tyres also are included in this clause and if used in inappropriate conditions (i.e. where there is no ice or snow) and they damage the road surface then they would be clearly illegal.

I present that as wot I have read & don't pretend that it's gospel. Plod might prove difficult if in a funny mood and the "cooncil" would, no doubt, happily blame you for every pothole.

The above aside I knew someone who used studs a few years ago. He found that once the tyre heated up he tended to have the studs ping. He also did the odd bit of damage to the wheel arch. Always got to where he wanted though & two wheel drive.

oh I know I know. I had the same discussion with him and he eventually came down to the point that he reckoned they would only get done if someone could proe the tyres had damaged the road. I said that was like saying murder is legal on the basis that you'll only be done if they can prove you did it.

TBH you don't really need studs here. My 2wd octavia never got stuck the last 2 years with Nokian WRG2 tyres fitted, and that included rescuing a Touareg 4x4 from a drift :giggle:

I'm fairly sure my 2wd yeti won't get stuck either. You don't really need 2wd unless you go off road. I have done plenty off road driving and only rarely had to use 4wd.

I had 235/45-17 Wintrac Exremes on our last car (Passat Estate) (fab/blingy), but this time I went for a set of 215/60-16 Wintrac Extremes on Skoda steelies - won't be cool, but will be functional. Tyres from Camskill, wheels from Bickerton Skoda. By the time they're fitted it'll be about the same as mytyre.com. I'll tell you how I get on when they arrive.

Also got my tyres from Camskill but went for the Hankook at £77 each delivered, a very good price for a mid range brand. Rims I got earlier in the year from my nearest dealer and fitting locally for £5 a rim; bargain. Couldn't source my preferred Nokian WR G2 other than from mytyres at £200 each :o

Just waiting with baited breath for the challenges this winter might bring to see if I made the right choice :wonder:

TP

Thought on 17" but eventually plumped for 215 x 60 x 16 Continental Winter Contact TS 830 P. Bit of a change from my previous Goodyear all terrains but we'll no doubt see in due course how it works out.

OK guys, since we've all been banging on about what's best, should we not put out a winter photo/video challenge to confirm our experiences

I'll start another thread later on today, if someone could keep as a sticky

You mean like this;

Previous 140 SE running on Nokian WR G2 205/55 R16 94H, fitted to VAG 7Jx16 ET45 steel rims with Skoda Rif trims :rofl:

OK TP - first blood to you - Exactly what I meant

Aim of thread would be more about evidence than idle chat :giggle:

or like this? Not a Yeti shot but my Octavia L&K running on Nokian WRG2. Temperature was minus 16 when this was taken
