Wheel Size & Ride Comfort

Featured Replies

I am ordering a new Yeti (1.2 TSi DSG Elegance) and was surprised that there was no option to get 16" rather than 17" wheels. I test drove two Yeti's back-to-back one with 16" wheels and one with 17" wheels (to test 1.2 Tsi) and felt that the car with 16" wheels road a little smoother than that with 17" wheels. It was not hugely different but the smaller wheeled version was less "jiggly" over poor road surfaces.

I would have thought it was an easy no-cost option for Skoda to offer 16" wheels as a customer option - if it was available would anyone have gone for the 16" over the standard 17"?

Phone Skoda and they'll do it for you.

A forum member on this section already did the same.

If enough people complain they may offer it as an option....

Here in Norway its an option, you can choose between Moon 16´ or Annapurna 17´ wheels when you order a 2.0 CR 140 HK 4x4 Experience business DSG,

on an 1.2 TSI 105 HK Experience business DSG you even have a third option; the Spitzberg 17´alu wheel.

We do not have the Elegance model line in Norway.

The experience and elegance are similar specifications I believe. The Ambition and SE are similar as well I also believe. (but I could be wrong)

The Tiguan I've got at the moment has got 16" wheels and I would agree that the ride does seem more "pliant", especially over rough or broken roads, BUT it doesn't feel so "planted", and doesn't have quite the same feeling of confidence cornering or "pushing-on" so much.

I have 16" Moons factory fitted to my UK Elegance spec and the ride and handling is far better than that of the 17" set-up on the previous SE.

Had to e-mail Skoda Auto directly to get it sorted, as Skoda UK have a 'bee in their bonnet' about fitting as large a diameter wheels as possible to UK spec cars and refused my request for the 16" option. All it actually requires is a couple of option codes adding to the order form; two minute job.

If you have difficulty getting them to agree to your request send me a PM,

Regards,

TP

As in Finland, too. Spitzberg 7,0x17" 225/50R17 is the standard and Moon 7,0x16" 215/60R16 is an option without charge.

I think it is pretty logical that something with a lower sidewall will be stiffer and thus give you better handling through corners. Add that wheel inch to the tyre and the whole thing flexes more over bumps to give you a compliant ride but jelly wobbles around the bends. I prefer the 17" wheels and the handling. I come from an Audi with rock hard suspension in which I had to take speedbumps at 15mph or less. Now I do the same bumps at three times the speed and no problem. So the 17" wheels are plenty comfy in my book... But if you come from a car with blancmange suspension to a Yeti I might see why one would want to have compromised handling but better comfort. Horses for courses.

I have the standard 17" tyres in the summer and had 16" 205/50 tyres last winter. I struggled to feel a difference. This winter I will be on 16" 215/60 tyres so according to the learned folk on here I should feel a difference since the sidewalls are now balloonesque...

......and as, on my new car, I've changed Hyundai's standard 175/60/14, to 165/65/14 (Goodyear Vector All Season) ..... then I'll be floating like a hovercraft. But in the Yeti, like your goodself, will be merely balloonesque on the 215/60/16's.

Interesting thread this one! When we bought our SE Yeti, I would have preferred the 16" Wheels but my dealer at the time said it was a no no, maybe if I had pushed it more? however the thing to remember is that there is only 15mm differance in sidewall depth between the 225/50/17 and 205/60/16 tyres, weather that is enough to make much differance I`m not sure, maybe a "teckie" person on tyres may have the answer? I felt that our Yeti was firm on the suspension when new, but seems to have become more supple or have we got used to it? compared with my Octavia which has done 105,000 miles yes it is firmer but quite acceptable, I can`t make my mind up if the 16" rims look a little "lost" on the Yeti?

The 16" wheels look fine if shod with 215/60 R16 tyres.

The 16" wheels look fine if shod with 215/60 R16 tyres.

The problem as I see it is that the 16" Moon alloys come with 205/55 tyres, as fitted to the Greenline version, while the only other 16" alloys are the "Nevis" alloys which take the 215/60 tyres. The 17" Spitzberg wheels take 225/50 tyres.

I don't think the Nevis alloys suit the looks of the Yeti at all compared with the Spitzberg alloys. Also I am not too sure what the insurance implications would be of fitting skinnier 205/55 tyres when the OEM was 225/50?

Effectively we need Skoda to offer a 16" Spitzberg style alloy.

Or am I confused????

Skoda fit 215/60 R16 to the moon alloys for all other countries. They only supply the greenline with them over here in UK (officially) with the 205/55's, but if you are TP then you can get Skoda (auto) cz to change the order and Skoda UK might honour it emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Have a search on the picture thread for his motor which was supplied with 215/60 R16's on Moon Alloys.

edit: We just want them to supply 16" Moon Alloys as a no cost option.

Yep. That's the one. Those wheels look great and sooooo much easier to clean than the Spitzberg's on Elsie the helipad.

Look so much better than the silly 17" ones on Elsie.......

I'm with you on this one Andy and 900000.

My 17s are so much more 'comfortable' on my Yeti than the 17/18s on my tweaked Octavia vRS. Overall, a Yeti on 17s is a superb blend of comfort and sportiness.

However, I run my 17s with winter tyres of 225/50 17 and have 18s with 225/45 18 at present to improve the handling with still a pretty good level of ride comfort.

Reverting to the OE's post. I agree; Skoda UK should offer a 16" option on the SE and Elegance (for those that want to have that spec) .....

................ but at the same time I wish they did a vRS.

So what did you have to do to get Skoda to supply the Moon Alloys with 215/60 R16 tyres? Dealer says the spec is as defined by Skoda UK and there are NO exceptions - so who, or what, do you do to get them to change the spec?
