VRS Burning oil

Featured Replies

Oil was down to about 1/4 of the cross-hatched section, so I added 500ml to bring it to the top of that section. Total added = 1L in just over 4000km. Hopefully, this use is still attributable to running in.

I've now done 1000km since the last "report". Today I waited the usual 15 minutes, dipped the stick, just a fraction below the cross-hatched section. Great, I think, it's only used a couple of mm since I topped up. Since the car felt hotter than usual (dipstick was hard to handle), I thought I'll wait another 5 minutes to make conditions more comparable to normal. This time the level was at halfway up the cross-hatched section (I did it three times to be sure). Therefore, based on my experience, the level can be at the top when warm, halfway up when slightly less warm, then somewhat higher when cold. I decided to accept the highest figure for today as the correct one, but who really knows?

Conclusion: checking oil levels in these cars is a bit of a black art.
