VRS Burning oil

Featured Replies

Yeah I personally think this may be the bigger factor. Ours has done nearly 9k now and I've not been all that gentle with it, I think I've topped it up once (maybe 300ml) in 18 months. It used to misfire a bit too when new, particularly when being driven hard, don't recall it happening in the last several K, think tat also often settles once properly run in

  • I will ask about the oil breather system before they do any major mechanical works, I will post tomorrow afternoon when I am back from the dealer.

  • Actually there was an amusing (and shocking for me!) confession some time ago when I was repeatedly asking how come you post so much cr@p about the vRS if you've never had one? At least us, we're shar

I am booking mine in for a track day in the not too distant future and I am sure getting it hot and working it hard will help the situation! New breather mod has been done and it seems to have used a bit less oil than usual, we have done over 350 miles since the fix and oil is in the middle of the cross hatched area.

I still think there's more too it than the running in, I ran mine in with varying revs from day one and am still driving it this way with a mixture of high revs and gentle town driving.

Mine has been using 1lt per 1000 miles. It has now had the breather mod fitted and we shall see what happens.

1 litre in 1,000 miles, I would log it with your dealer, they will say it is a running in thing and will improve, they will also say you should run the car for a bit longer.

I woud reply NO, you can give me free oil and then get the car in for oil usage test now, before I have run the car for 18 months.

Thanks for your assistance Mr Dealer.

They can check your engine number and it will tell them if you need the modified oil breather.

OK, so after 2400km the level was down to about 1/3 of the way up the cross-hatched section. I didn't really want to be waiting until lights came on, so I added 250ml of Liquimoly 504 rated 5W/30, and it was back to 3/4 of the cross-hatched section. I decided to leave it at that and also to remain calm and positive.

So 2400km X 4 = about 10000 km for only 1 litre of oil?

As you would say over there..."no worries, mate."

Dealer just called, Skoda have asked for me to monitor the next 500 miles and report back, then they'll decide whether to have it in to be looked at or not.

So 2400km X 4 = about 10000 km for only 1 litre of oil?

I've done about 17000km and added about 3l oil total - 1l x 3 times.

Topped it around 16000kms and when I checked yesterday it was in the middle of the crosshatched markings. Hrmmmm....

Well, that's a relief! Actually, I think I could probably have put in another 250ml, but that would have taken the level somewhere into the A. I'll monitor it going forward, hoping that the rate of burning stays the same or improves.

Have just had 2 year service and booked in for oil test. Told 'mods are available and will be fitted, we have had this issue with a few vRS's'.

Tony

Just done the test mileage and been back to the dealer and the oil level has not moved on the dipstick.

I noticed, however that the dealer filled the car with Quantum 5W40 not the recommended Edge 5W30.

Anyone care to comment?

Tony

Does it have the correct VW 504 00 for variable service intervals and VW 502 00 for fixed? If it does then all is fine, If not they are in trouble.

Just checked, it only complies with the VW 502 00, check your service book for the servicing code. Has to be the fixed intervals one to be able to use the 502 oil.

I was looking for 5W40 with VW 504 00 approval (variable servicing on vRS) but could not find any, at least on opieoils that is :)

Some datasheet.

Is yours on fixed servicing schedule or variable?

Is yours on fixed servicing schedule or variable?

Every 12mths, so fixed.

Tony

My vRS is on varaible so I cannot use this oil according to manufacturer's spec, but I would like to ...

I wonder what is the difference really as I think there isn't any! Same engine, same duty cycles, all the same. I think with fixed servicing intervals worse quality oil (502 compared to 504) can be used as it will be changed after 12 month anyway. Where 504 can last longer

You can have the service changed to fix

Just ask the Dealer

anyone tried the fully synthetic oil in asda which costs £20 for 5 litres, it says its suitable for all modern performance engines, but could not see any info if its suitable for my vrs. I normal buy castrol edge at the moment, also soes mine seem ok for oil usage. I have had the car for 18 months and drove about 17000 miles and put in about 7 litres of oil in that time.

I wouldn't put something like that in my motor...

@ChrisRs - if this can be changed like that why is it hard stamped on the car info tag then when it leaves the factory?

IIRC, All VAG cars come with the right oil for variable servicing from the factory; its the dash coding which will be done at factory (or at PDI), hence the "option" should be listed on the build sheet.

Jabo, my Passat was set to variable and everytime it went for a service VW set it to fixed, that way twice as many services are needed in the life of the car! An easy way for a dealer to obtain a few more quid from you.

I have said before modern oil will go for many miles, just change when the car asks.

@Chas, as long as the numbers on the back of the can state it is suitable for your car, I would use it, I have been using Rock Oil, Q8 and anything else that has been to hand for the Fabia. The rate it goes through it I am sure it will be fine, I even questioned if it needed an oil change at the first service as it had already had nearly twice the stated oil capacity in the first year.

In that case I want fixed please as I have 3 years servicing with them lol

I would get that changed then.

On a lighter note, I have been using the Fabia all day today as the Yeti is out on loan to a friend in need, I must say I have had a really enjoyable day, a few traffic light moments, steady cruise on the motorway and some twisty lanes in between, all in done 166 miles and averaged 40.4 mpg, I know when I get the Yeti back though I will be forgetting to change gear.

My left leg keeps looking for the clutch to press when I am starting the Fabia

Because they fill it with LongLife Oil
