Aero wiper arms or just aero retrofit blades?

Featured Replies

Is there a difference in performance? Cos retrofit blades (or ordinary arms) would be a darn sight cheaper....

I use the OEM retrofit and I think that they are fine. Couldn't justify the expense of changing the arms too.

cheapy ebay ones are more than upto the job

I found with the cheap ebay ones that they started to smear really badly going over 60mph, i tryed bending my arms slightly to see if that made a differnce but didnt really do anything.

I now have just the bosh standard blades and they work fine :-)

I've got Goodyear aero wipers on mine (standard fitment) and they are the best wipers I've tried (Bosch, Trico Neoform, eBay specials...). Used them on previous cars and my brother has them on his too. I get them from Costco, not sure if you can get them elsewhere.

I've got aeroblades from wiperblades.co.uk. Best wipers I ever bought. The fixings stick up a bit, (which you wouldn't get with changing the arms too) but they only cost about 11 quid for the set...

Mine had aero wipers fitted when I bought it , but not the arms. Result - annoying wind noise above 70mph - flicked the wipers on and it went away. Bought a set of decent curved Bosch ones off wiperblades.co.uk fro £15 delivered and no extra wind noise. So unless your fitting the arms, I would say don't bother.

I just fitted Aero wiper arms and blades from a MK4 Golf.

They are way more quite than std arms and work very well. Better than my cheaper aero blades

Aero arms it is then.

Bowders, could you list the part number for the aero arms please?

Cheers,

Martin

I love the look of the aeros and how quiet on the window they are, but they aren't half rubbish at pushin/wiping away slighty dry dirt.

Part numbers are

1J2955410 D (21" blade arm)

1J2955409 D (19" blade arm)

hope that helps

A tip on removing your old arms is to remove dust covers, remove 13mm wiper arm nuts. Spray with WD40 and let soak a bit(as tapered threads). Then refit 13mm nuts loose, shut bonnet and fold wiper arms up from windscreen and wiggle the arm near the fixing. This will take the strain from the tapered fixing and allow easier removal. Plus when the arm finally goes the 13mm nut will stop you losing knuckles and damaging paintwork

I used rain x over the window and found no issues with dirt removal. Mind you not long fitted so keep a eye out.

Even if the dirt has been caked on a while? Like blug splatter or bird mess.

Hi I have a drivers side aero arm for sale, pm me if interested - also got some old aero blades off

I have noticed the same with mine too. A day of hot sunshine and a bit of bird cr@p generally requires a paper towel and some water....

Can someone please advise if it has to be mk4 Golf arms? Just saw some arms which have supposedly comes from a mk5 55 reg Golf but will "fit mk4 also". Is this right or BS?

I thought the mk5 had different length wiper blades. So while the arms themselves might fit, you may find more faffing about in finding suitable aero blade lengths to get the correct coverage (and missing of each other / not falling off the screen edge).

However if you can get the measurements of the two arms, and if they match that of the standard arms on your octy at the moment you should be ok (think you would still need to get mk4 golf blades though, so factor that into the cost as they aren't cheap!)

If it helps, I can provide measurements from my mk4 golf arms.

Whats the difference between the OE and aero arms? Could OE be modified to fit aeros?

I've always prefered Valeo standard wipers

i have a pair of mk4 OEM aero arms + wipers for sale if interested PM me £70

FYI Halfords now do the bosch retrofit aero wipers, and with trade i'm sure i got change from £15.

They work about the same as the original blade wipers, but they look a lot neater. The mounting/fitment isn't too unsightly either - looks standard.

Andrew.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the offer but can't justify spending that much on it.

Cheers

Well, that was the point of the whole thread. There's mixed opinions on the retros vs the original aero blades. Some reckon the retro fit attachments are fugly but I haven't seen any to comment. To be honest, not so bothered about that, it s the performance of the two I'm really interested in.

Have seen some aero arms which are definitely the right ones but advertised at £45 and £55 respectively (plus blades). For that amount of money, I'm just going to go with VW retrofit blades from the local stealer for the winter and see how I get on with them. Didn't want to buy cheap aeros off eBay as my first experience of them.

Where have you seem them advertised? As I'm thinking about fitting some, I've already got the retro fit blades which are good but like te look of the OE ones better.

eBay....

I've tried 3 types over the years, and have a firm favourite.

Valeo Silencio X.TRM blades are by far the best I've used. No lifting at 80mph+, full screen coverage, good water clearing. Bought from wiperblades.co.uk. I've had 2-3 sets now.

I didn't have time to replace them with the same last time I changed, so had to plump for the cheaper Valeo Compact Revolution blades available from Halfords. These blades lift on the drivers side edge at motorway speeds, so instantly annoyed me as I spend most of my time on the motorway. They clear the water fine off-motorway though.

The original Bosch Super Plus blades were the worst though. Lifted on the motorway, smeared and froze up during the winter. Useless old design.

The Mk4 arms are too expensive to be a sensible option for me. I have more important things to spend my money on!
