Wheel changing - what tools?

Thanks for that telecaster! I find your comments most reassuring. What sort of tyres do you use in those extreme conditions, please?

I use Continental Contact 5 215/60 R 16 99 on ALU rims based on advice from my local Skoda dealer.

Mind you that the rubber for Nordic winter tyres are different from those used on continental tyres

due to us having 20-30C below freezing point frequently, so other types may fit your coditions better.

Helps a lot!

Great idea Merlinman. Tool arrived today and yes it fits just fine. Great service from the E-Bay chappie.

Thanks again

Otto,

Your WINTER is quite different from our winter - where the worst usually is the occasional snow and slush and the big surprise - black ice on the road. The Conti's actually did best in this year's ADAC test - although the TS 800 and TS 830 , but in much smaller sizes. I have been quite happy with my Goodyears. Have a nice trip to Tromsø.

Everybody: Don't forget to put a little grease or antiseize on the centering hub when changing wheels.

Probably an obvious question, but will this wrench do the job on my Yeti?

"Reversible 1/2 inch Torque Wrench for maximum usability. Robust metal construction and dimpled handle for increased grip. Includes plastic storage box, 3/8" adaptor and 5" extension bar."

Torque wrench is for doing things UP, not undoing them. It should only be used for the final part of the nut sequence, to check they are the correct tension.

Yes, it is ok for the final tightening of the bolts to 120nm, but must not be used for undoing the bolts. To undo the bolts, one of these is ideal. Extend it for undoing, slide it back in for doing them back up so you don't overtighten, Then finish off with the torque wrench. When tightening, always work around the wheel, tightening alternate bolts as you go, until you get back to the first one. Take great care with the locking wheel nut, it is very easy for it to slip off the bolt head and to injure you in the process.

Even your local Tesco will probably stock the telescopic wrench. It fits nicely in the lower plastic underfloor box too.
