VRS failed its MOT

Featured Replies

Went to my parents to get the VRS, got it upto temp then gave it a good blast down some twisty B-roads to give it a blow through. Sitting in the MOT waiting area to have one of the mechanics come and say to me. "Its on the ramps, but its an instant fail!" WTF - he jacked up the front end and the p/s spring dropped out of its mount and rattle around. The spring is broken at 1 section and bent further round where its jammed in place!!

Time for coilovers I think!

I bet you are glad of the b-road thrash??

Yeah - made me think a bit on the way home...........

Ouch.

Though think of it this way - At least you're in one piece, and it's a pretty good reason to upgrade.

So if you couldn't tell the difference going through some twisty B roads, and I assume it only fell out of its mount when on the jack, how could you tell day to day whether you'd broken a spring? My mum's 306 estate broke a rear one and fell on its arse, do some cars do it less obviously?

I always just assumed I'd know if a spring broke because it'd be on the floor in one corner or I'd notice as soon as I got off the driveway...

A spring snapped on my MK2 Golf and I didnt know till MOT :)

When a front spring went on the wife's 9N Polo, it broke at half height - so the car dropped down onto the bump stop and could not be driven as it scooped up gravel off the driveway. When a front spring went on the B5 Passat, only the bottom coil or two broke off, but, it also dropped down (again tapered spring) but this time the rest of the spring came down over the damper lower platform on to the drive shaft, still drivable though but not nice.

Rear spring went on my old car and you could hear it rattling around. So replaced- when I came to replace it was sheared off but was rusty as hell around the clean snap. This indicated to me I'd been driving around with a broken spring for a fair old time!

I've also known front ones to go and pop the tyre at the same time!!!

I had one of the front ones snap on my old A4. Apparently VAG springs are well known for it, something to do with the way the ends of the coil are manufactured according to the garage who fixed mine.

I had that with mine earlier this year. Took it in for a test and got the call saying ti had failed due to a broke spring. The end of the top coil had snapped off. Fortunately it had jammed in the mount so didn;t drop out and wreck the tyre.

It only showed up when you jacked the car up off the floor. Its the top 3-4 coils that have broken and twisted together with the rest of the spring so the front end hasnt dropped any at all.

Need to try and get something sorted within 10 days or its a full retest price!

All sorted - AP's on their way from Awesome!

rear spring broken on a 306...somethings not right there :giggle:

Is it common for spring to break on the vRS. I've heard of a few others this has happened too as well.

Stephen

Broken front N/S spring on SDI. No difference in noise or handling. Seems to depend where it breaks. It is common on all Fabias.

Got me scared now! Was sat in the car with a friend earlier... She was playing with my cup holder when we both heard this little tappy boing noise.

We both stopped chatting and looked over with a confused look...

Now you've got me wondering if my spring had let go... EEK!

Haha so that's what you Notts lads call it? :D

Also has me worried as well as I've had a strange clunking noise coming from the back for the past couple of days :(

When mine went is was an very loud bang - as if something had hit the underside of the car. I initially thought I'd run over something and when I couldn't find anything that the boost pipe had blown off but all was fine so never notcied the spring.

I never noticed any noise or anything - MOT guy said it could be like that for upto 2 years! As its only recently that they got the new style MOT ramp with the suspension and steering wiggler

Yep. The Lupo failed it's MOT with one. You can tell the difference with the new ones, but it didn't feel like anything was wrong before.
