New car has a private plate...

Featured Replies

As per title really.

Just bought a Mazda MX5 and it has a private reg number

with the previous owners initials.

He can't be bothered to transfer it to his new ride so it's coming

with the car. It does however make it appear to be 02 reg.

I'd like to get it its old number back or an alternate one

that relates to the year of first registration.

I don't want to sell it or keep it, so can I just surrender the right

to use the number, give it back and avoid a fee.

Rather get this out of the way asap while I'm

still getting the paperwork sorted.

Thanks for the advice in advance

If you transfer it off the car should get back a correct age related plate, probably it's original one.

I'm not sure you can just say you don't want the current one. Probably have to put it on a years retention and then not renew it.

But either way the cost will be about the same, about £100 with the VAT. Doubt they'll do the paperwork for free, it's the DVLA.

There is no cost for the replacement original number, you get that automatically.

if the private plate is of any significance you could always sell it.

True, or auction it on a site like carreg. Even if it only makes £100 it pays your fees to the DVLA.

There is silly money in private plates, I'd certainly be having a go at selling it.
