speed camara detector? which one?

Featured Replies

Hey there guys, just i quick one? i seen a snooper lynx GPS Thing for 100 quid, any good?

Cheers

Best speed camera detector? Your eyes. GPS ones are inaccurate/unreliable/don't cater for mobile cameras until it's too late. Laser detector style ones can only really detect the laser when it's pointed at you from what I can gather, i.e. too late. There's no substitute for keeping your eye on the limits and staying within them, unfortunately.

Have owned a Roadangel for the last 10 yrs and has never failed me.Subscriptions can add up though.

There's these amazing things that prevent you from getting any speeding tickets whatsoever. What's even more amazing is they're in plain view and you can see them as you drive along. What they are is these circles by the side of the road. Some are red circles with a white centre and numbers inside, the others are white circles with a black slash through. If you don't drive any faster than the number in the circles, or when the white with black slash one is shown 60mph on single carriageway, 70mph motorway/dual carriageway - you never get a speeding ticket. Just one of the amazing discoveries I have made on Britain's roads.

Not being funny but what the hell has this got do with Fabia 1???

Always when these types of questions come up, you get someone saying use your eyes

LOL

I've been using the Origin B2 for the last 7years or more, it's been fantastic in all my cars (I've got a cradle for each car I own, and take the B2 with me).

Sadly they don't make it anymore, and have recently replaced it with the new all singing all dancing touch screen 'Pogo Plus'

Can't but help it's very expensive thing to have at over £200 +annual subscriptions, so it's very hard to recommend them nowadays.

Lots of APPS can be had on smart phones too, which do the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

For example my Co-pilot live (on android smart phone) has full sat nav, and regular FREE camera location updates for life. There hasn't yet been a camera location that's it's missed out on, and with regular updates, things like the constantly evolving M1 roadworks seem to be bang up to date.

Maybe worth giving a smartphone app a go first, see how you get on with one of them

I wonder why :)

They're free

No annual subscription

Only downside is that you need a modicum of common sense to actually drive sensibly

I wonder why so many of this type of thread comes up in the first place

I'm pretty sure everyone is guilty of speeding at one time or another on a regular basis.

Witness the fact that most people on here have modified their car to produce MORE power than it came with...

Why the hell does anyone need 3000000lbs from the VRS' other than to drive faster than the next car on the road.

Witness the fact that most people on here have modified their car to produce MORE power than it came with...

Really?

Are you positive of that?

Because somehow I actually doubt that presumption.

I suspect most people are members of this Forum because they are interested in Skodas, and actually only a minority have modified to increase power.

My response to that would be there's no law against getting up to the speed limit faster than the next car ;) Even in my lowly 1.4mpi I can usually out accelerate most other cars on the road (guessing they're too scared to put their pedal to the floor), I get to the speed limit, shortly after they in their BMW etc sail past breaking the limit as I'm already at the limit. Even though they are overtaking me I feel victorious because I got up to speed faster ;)

Routinely breaking the speed limit and then trying to avoid being caught, braking on sight of a police car etc, is a mugs game if you ask me :) Plus there's nothing to say a car must be used on the public highway, go to track days etc and max out your car if you can.

I'm pretty sure everyone is guilty of speeding at one time or another on a regular basis.

One of the greatest contradictions in terms I've ever come across

BTW - I've got a remapped car, held a clean licence for 27 years, and have never owned a speed camera detector :)

I do own a snooper 3Zero, have done for 2 months or so but it's been in the glove box a while. When I use it it is very effective but as others have said you can't beat common sense and good old vision. I only really use it if I'm travelling on unfamiliar roads and or long distances, for example it's good to tell you what bank of SPECS your at, they are usually in 3's but it tells you if you are entering/leaving one set.

P.S I've had a clean licence for 7 years :giggle: (does this mean I'm 20 years younger than you Bryan?)

Oh and to pick on another point I don't own a Skoda or a modified car.

P.S I've had a clean licence for 7 years :giggle: (does this mean I'm 20 years younger than you Bryan?)

No, it just means you were unlucky enough to get caught 7 years ago :p

Don't forget, you're a Volvo driver - now go and fetch your pipe and slippers :D

Sygic GPS app will tell you the speed limit wherever you are and can be made to moan at you regularly if you drift over by more than x mph. (I say x because you can set your own threshold. I suppose you could set it to 20mph over but that would sort of defeat the object wouldn't it!)

Also has cameras recorded in common or fixed locations.

So not a speed camera detector as such, but a useful reminder of what the limit is (if you are unobservant enough not to know what it is anyway)

I've had a remapped car, and I'm now on a pretty highly modded, remapped, hybrid turbo car. The one time I got caught speeding was in my 90bhp bog standard Golf TDI, and wasn't due to stupidity but what I would call overconfidence. I got caught doing 59mph immediately before a speed limit changed from 40 to 60, because I was cocky, knew the limit change was coming up, and knew I was on a safe dual carriageway with no pedestrian access or pavements, at a quiet time. I sped up too early, got snapped, paid the price, and now have a clean license again as I've kept my nose clean since.

I still say that despite the fact I have a "record of speeding" and a high performance car, I'm far less of a risk than many people on the road and they're just luckier than I am to have not been caught/banned. I like to drive "quickly" as in the feeling of acceleration or nipping (safely) round some nice twisties, rather than "fast" as in balls out straight line speed.

No need for the sarcastic reply. These threads always bring out the self righteous road users.

What you are saying is easier said than done when you are looking out for pot holes, pedestrians and other stupid road users pulling out, braking for no reason. It can be easy to miss a speed limit sign. I have a road angel and many times I've been down roads for which I have no idea of the limit. Luckily if there is a camera on said road the road angel will tell me what the speed limit it.

It is a safety feature as well as a license saver.

From those comments I would suggest that you need to undertake some further training. Have you ever considered a Defensive Driving Course?

A good admission of driving without due care and consideration there.

As a police officer in the third biggest geographic county in England and Wales your much more likely to be caught by someone like me as we only have about 6 fixed speed cameras in the whole force and if I stop someone with one of these devices fitted I am 99% more likely to prosecute as you have obviously tried to flout the law and have no excuse for not knowing to speed limit so, see you in court!

Why would i need to take a defensive driving course? I am quite capable of braking when some moron does something stupid in front of me. I have taken IAM.

Glad to know that you are so perfect and you always know the speed limit and you have never broken one.

I thought the police weren't meant to make assumptions? You are assuming that there is a speed limit sign for the road i was unaware of the speed limit. You assume that because i don't know the limit, that i am breaking it. You also assume that because i have a road angel i am 'flouting' the law. Nothing is further from the truth. Enraged with your reply on my way to work this morning, i consciously looked for speed limit signs (I know the speed limits on all the roads on my journey to work so never really have to consciously have to look for the limits) and a classic example is turning out from a 30 limit side street onto a 40. Thing is at the junction onto this road there are no change of speed limit signs and it isn't until about 400-500 metres down the road that there is a repeater sign.

I would like to add that 9 times out of 10 where i don't know the speed limit, that i am under the speed limit when i find out what it is.

I think that police should also practice what they preach, as i can't remember the last time that i saw an officer doing the speed limit, particularly around Shropshire. They are usually flying past the traffic on the main dual carriageway through one town, which is a 60mph limit.

I also thought that the police have to be impartial? i don't think discrimination would be looked on favorably in court B)

I don’t normally reply to these types of threads but this one in particular caught my eye.

IF you really are a police officer (and I do doubt that you are based on your post). Do you really want that reply to be taken in to consideration by the majority of law abiding citizens who will be reading this forum? I mean let’s be honest here most (no in fact a very high percentage) of the people on brisky you can confidently say are not your usual corsa type chav driving around in a dangerous and totally unaware driving style. Intentionally trying to drive too fast.

IMO and I fully respect that every has their own opinion your post as an officer of the law in a highly respectable position has just confirmed on a public forum that you would discriminate against a driver with a speed detector device in their car.

Now I’m not naive enough to think that the world is perfect and I have a vast amount of life experience that I rely on everyday which in no small part includes psychology and its vast complex nature. I.E. A jobs worth who is having a bad day and you are the one they decide to take it out on to someone who would help a perfect stranger in trouble rather than walking on by. Any way back to my point. You as a public servant and one in a much respected profession that can influence someone’s life dramatically, positively or negatively, have actually admitted that your own preconceived ideas will ultimately mean the person you pull over in those circumstances has absolutely no chance of not getting a NIP.

So can we make the assumption that if it was a big bussomed, very attractive lady (or man, I not discriminating) and they were in the same circumstances you would act the same way? Or if they offered you an alternative way of resolving the matter you wouldn’t take it?

I'm sure you wouldn’t want to be tarred with the same brush and if I’m not mistaken that’s exactly how you should be applying the law. However I guess we have just had a very informative insight in to the actual real life decision process of a police officer. I for one am very disappointed with that. I suppose it’s indicative of the way our society is and the lack of respect (I’m sure you find yourself saying that on a regular basis). Two wrongs don’t make a right.

DISCLAIMER: I am not defending speeding in any way but there are many other factors that would need to be considered. I am not and never will be an angel and no doubts break the law from time to time (sometimes even intentionally). However I am not trying to make out I am holeyer than thou and I can accept the consequences for my own actions. I do however expect to be treated fairly and with respect and that is the whole point of replying to this post. It seems the officer in question is either in denial or just doesn’t give a toss that he has preconceived prejudices that will affect someone’s life. In response to your "see you in court" I say to you what goes around comes around.
