Bad earth or poor connection?

sorry, Mk1 Fabia vrs, 12v 80w

Are you sure about that wattage?

Are they H4 or H7 bulbs?

I would try changing the bulb first, to see if that makes a difference.

Yeah, I bought them Rally blue type ones from Hallfords which are 12v 80w, Its not the bulbs because Ive tried Bosh All Weather and standard bulbs its always the same.

How can i cheack the lighting earth?

Silly question has the bulb been put-in wrong ie upside down will give this effect.

Possible duff bulb, incorrect wattage bulb, erosion of reflective headlight lining.

Swap bulbs around to see any difference.?

Firstly, you do realise that 80w bulbs are for "Off Road Use only", as stated on the Halfords web site?

Secondly, since these exceed the wattage designed to be used in the car, has it possibly confused the lighting ECU, and possibly overloaded it?

My guess is that it is the connector at the back of the bulb. Over time the connections can become loose meaning a dull bulb and the connector overheating / melting (been there done that).

I'd agree that the issue is probably the connector.

Also that 80W bulbs are illegal for on-road use.

No need to fit them in a Yeti then :giggle:

People say that "headlight bulb holders are idiot-proof". People frequently underestimate the ingenuity of idiots! ;)

Seriously, I've seen a 5/21W stop-tail bulb installed reversed, which requires a degree of brute force. I don't see any reason why someone couldn't do the same with a headlight bulb.

is there a manual adjust? I think Ill start with talking it to be set up

Manual adjustment for what?

The only adjustment is for the aim of the headlight.

You appear to have an electrical problem.

What happens if you put a standard 65w bulb in?

Its still the same, doesnt matter what bulb. Ive tried all dif types.

I was just going to see if adjusting them would do anything before i get into it more, becuase I cant do that till the weekend.

Look - just try changing the bulb CONNECTOR (not the bulb). They are a couple of quid and I reckon it'll sort your problem. :smirk:

Do you have access to a multi-meter and can you check the voltage at the connector? and have you checked the fuse connections are OK and not corroded?

  • Author

nope not yet, my meter is at work will do it tomorrow. they are all messed up and pointing every where now because ive been messing so the need setting up. but setting up aint going to change the problem.

1 got 12.00V on the passanger side that looks to have normal light, and on the driver side which im having problems with im getting 11.94V

Took both bulbs out and switched on they both look like they are giving out the same lignt. Its got to be the lens???

If you swap the bulbs between sides, does the issue move? Are they the same make?

The lens will not alter the amount of light unless it has "fogged", which you would see straight away. Ditto the aim of the lens.

I presume you took those volt readings without the engine running. What are they with the engine running?

As Gadgetman says, are both the bulbs the same make and wattage?

Have you tried putting a new pair of STANDARD bulbs in? If so, what was the result?
