Yeti Storage box on dash

Featured Replies

Does somebody know the part number of the box with lid?

If the price is reasonable, I could buy one for Tom-Tom navigation and power (for satnav and phones) project.

Is it possible to fit storage box retrospectively?

Is it possible to fit storage box retrospectively?

I would think this is easy as the cars without have a fitted storage tray in the same location. The storage box is held in with 2 screws, but from memeory you need a special bit to undo them. These are readily available in multi screwdriver bit kits if you don't have one.

I can't believe they would design two different mounting methods.

If you want to install a sat-nav etc, don't bother buying the rubber mat, just make one to fit around the sat nav base from some suitable rubber sheet. You can't reall see it anyway once the sat nav is in, particullarly if you add pads into the hinges to stop it opening more than required to raise the sat nav, when it then provides a good sunshade and looks reasonably neat without obstructing vision through the windscreen when driving. Again I used bits of the same rubber sheet held in place in the hinge assembly with black tape (You can't see this as the hinge is hidden in use)

Yes, it is possible to retrofit a "Top Box" and it only requires a T20 Torx Screwdriver (The one in your vehicle tool kit for removing the rear lights is a T20 Torx) for the two screws that hold it in place - No special tools required.

You might want to check out the Yeti Technical Guides section here on Briskoda - I did a guide to fitting an aftermarket Sat Nav / iphone charger in the Top Box - The Technical Guide section is a mine of information - check it out when you have time. - Here is the LINK to my guide.

Hope it helps .........Tony

PS If you need any details for the USB circuit etc, let me know.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Your excellent guide inspired me to try something similar. Now I'm thinking to use this kind of power splitter.

Hi GF (no such thing as a "Grumpy" Finn is there?) emoticon-0145-shake.gif

Had a look at your link and measured our Top Box again to compare the measurements. Width [3.54 Inches] and Height [1.34 inches] should be OK. However the depth [2.01 inches] is wider than my original and I found that once you have inserted a USB plug into the socket, it does intrude somewhat into the body of the Top Box. I decided that a better option was to have a flush USB socket at the rear of the box and altered the original design, as you can see in my guide. If you intend to use the Cigarette lighter / accessory sockets I think that the device may significantly restrict the room within the top Box, but that is for you to evaluate and decide. Let me know if I can be of help - and I will try.................Tony

Having studied your link I must admit I am confused ! My original question as to whether the storage box could be retro fitted refers to the cars which arrived from the factory with just a tray with rubber mat in the base. my car is a 2011 Active 2.0td model bought in Ireland and there is no room for the hinges of the box that I have seen in the excellent above link ? Perhaps someone could clarify if there are two different dash types ie: one with tray and one with box ?

The hinges are behind the box, and go under the dash, worling through two slots in the rear end of the box, hence you cant actually see any of the hinge once installed, just the arms coming into the rear of the box itself

I understand what you are saying but on the car with just the tray there are no holes or recesses to take the hinge projections or indeed the depth of the box itself, hence my question of there being two separate types of dash?

Silly me :S I have just had it explained to me by my son how the box sits into the "tray" and is screwed through. Sorry for being so dim :giggle:

Thanks again. Our Yeti is arriving on February 2012, so I have a lot of time to plan and search the best power source or build one of my own (like yours). I know that the cig plugs in the splitter make it bigger. I don't need them, but there should be more than one USB. Let's see what happens, I have to get first a spare top-box to begin.

I have just purchased the storage box and now I have to fit it. Has anybody done it from scratch ie; cutting the dash

and installing the box? I wonder has anyone got easy to follow pictures as I'm a bit nervous of the whole thing!

As I understand the Ambition and Experience versions has the box with lid and the Active version has the box without lid. These should be the Irish versions. Is there some Yeti version without the box at all?

As I understand it, "S" & "E" versions of the Yeti come with a "Top-Tray". "SE" specification vehicles and above come with a "Top-Box" (ie: a tray with a lid). They are interchangeable and you do not have to cut a hole in the dashboard to put in a Top-Box if you only have a tray.

This is a photo of the storage tray on my dash. Can't see how the storage box will fit there?

I have tried to pry open, but didn't but I have a feeling a little more force would make it pop.

What I need to know is if I remove the rubberised base will the storage box fit straight in without any more cutting etc ? Any help would be greatly appreciated, also does the base remove easily? Really afraid to tackle this without prior knowledge in case I make a bags of it !

I still haven't tackled this ! Final request for assistance, has anybody tackled this before or know what's involved?

I have a Yeti S on which the dashboard tray is as shown in the photo. It is not a removable item - rather it is an indentation in the dashboard moulding. There is a rubber mat in the bottom which is glued in. It would appear that the dashboard box which I have bought would require a cut-out the same shape and size as the rubber mat - though I have yet to confirm this in detail by making cardboard templates. It would be interesting to know whether anyone has undertaken the fitting of a box with a lid in this type of situation since the last postings on this thread. Thanks.

I'm sure it's been detailed on here before, but if you cant find the post the following may help:- If you carefully peel up the edge of rubber mat nearest you in the existing tray, I'm pretty sure you'll find two torx screws that secure the tray in place. Remove these & the tray should lift out towards you. Then the new box should simply fit in the space vacated, the hinge edge tucks under the lip adjacent to the windscreen & the edge nearest you is secured with the two torx screws in the same position as the old one. Lift the mat in the new box before you start to see where the screw holes are.

WARNING... My Yeti had the box as standard and I have removed & refitted it as described above, so I'm assuming that your Yeti's tray is secured in exactly the same way - they only make one dashboard!.

Proceed with caution in case I'm wrong. No responsibility accepted etc!!!!

Good luck.

Hi John. Thanks. Yes, it has been covered previously but some of the responses were misleading. The original question was raised by someone with exactly the same issue as I am now raising. It is clear that some Yetis have an open dashboard tray which is not removable by loosening two screws - if only it was that simple. In my case, as in the photo originally provided, the tray appears to have been integrally moulded with the rest of the dashboard. It is not readily removable and it would appear that the only means of fitting the box is by cutting the dashboard.

it would be interesting to know whether, when you removed your dashboard box, you found that there was a hole underneath which extended up the back so as to accommodate the hidden hinge. Does anyone have a photograph of their dashboard with the box removed, please?

Thanks again.

Once the dash top box is removed, there is an unobstructed hole in the dash, the same size as the inside of the dash top box. Effectively, the dash itself (being just a skin) is hollow underneath/behind, though there is a metal frame in there that IIRC carries the air vents, and extends down to the centre console supporting the radio/satnav & heater controls on the way.

From what you say, It does rather sound as though they now use two different dash mouldings,
