Yeti Storage box on dash

Featured Replies

it would be interesting to know whether, when you removed your dashboard box, you found that there was a hole underneath which extended up the back so as to accommodate the hidden hinge. Does anyone have a photograph of their dashboard with the box removed, please?

Check out the LINK. I think it may have what you are looking for in the way of pictures..............Tony

Hi Tony

Many thanks. Unfortunately, whilst there are several pictures of the box, I can't see one which shows the shape and size of the hole into which it fits.

Hi there, I am the person who in Oct 2011 posed the question and posted the photo of the dash tray and asked if it required cutting of the dash etc. Well in response to Dylanben, yes it does require cutting the dashboard and is a pig of a job!

I found once I'd peeled off the rubber mat that the dash underneath is a solid piece integrated to the surround. The job took me most of an afternoon but with a sharp scalpel set and a lot of patience I managed to accurately cut out the shape of the recess to accommodate the box. What I did find is that I had to secure the box to the sides of the dash rather than through the base as there was no bracket underneath to screw into. It's a fine job once fitted as I'd had it previously had the box in an Octavia and missed the convenience of it, I hope this was helpful Dylanben

Many thanks for replying. I'd wondered how you'd got on. It's good to know that the job is feasible. I keep having a look to try to work out what to do first. I reckon that, initially, I'll tackle the back of the tray where the hinged section passes out of view. I'm also interested to find out what is the significance of the short leg sections which are situated towards the front of the sides. Their shape suggests that they might be intended to rest on something. I'd anticipated that there might be an issue in securing the box and appreciate your comment about securing it by the sides. Thanks again.

I've managed it. You were right about it being a bit tricky. I decided to cut the base out first and then tackle the aperture at the back, where the box hinge tucks away. I found that there are lugs on the centre vent into which the hinge section fits - though something must be slightly awry as the box doesn't sit quite properly in its recess, even when it is pushed fully into the lugs. However, it's 99% OK - so I'm happy. I managed to secure it using the designated screw holes. I stuck a strip of aluminium, with speed nuts fitted, across the cut out - tucking under each side. I held it in place with duck tape whilst I fitted the screws. It looks good and, as you said, provides some useful space. I'm also having fun with under-seat storage drawers. The frames have three fixing points but the relevant diagrams only show one fixing screw. The two other fixing points involve connecting into holes already provided underneath the seat. However, they're not threaded and neither my Skoda supplier nor my local VW agent (they're Tiguan parts) could offer any solution - the two fittings not being shown on the EKTA profile for either vehicle. I think (hope) that I've just found something on eBay which should resolve the problem. If I'm successful, I'll report on it separately. The drawers aren't all that big but they're reasonably priced and not very obvious, so enabling bits and pieces to be tucked away out of sight.

I followed the excellent guide published by Sanqhar with some success. I agree about leaning the seat back for better access, but take care as I've been told that if you disconnect the cable you have to have the electronics reset!.

I was lucky to have a member send me the missing fixture, it is as the Ebay example above from 33q and is also known as a Spire Fixing.

Don't worry about the senior moments, I've been having them for years. I've seen so many wonderful places when I've forgotten where I'm going and turned up somewhere different.

Can also be very useful when the other half wants something done that you don't want to do; "Did you really ask me to do that dear? "

That's OK until the other half also has senior moments then it can become dangerous. :@

Hi there I am about to tackle the same thing with my yeti 2014 1.2 tsi DSG, I have the box now I just have to cut the hole to fit it, could you tell me please what you used to cut through the Dash, is it all plastic or is there a metal layer underneath, please advise thanks.

Probably not still around more than 7 years later??

Hi Wyndham59

It's a while ago since I did it but it's my recollection that I used a Stanley knife - making very shallow cuts each time. The cutting was all through the same material, there being no metal sheet underneath. I had been concerned about the possible presence of wires in close proximity but this turned out not to be a problem. I recollect having a bit of difficulty making it sit down properly in the hole. Initially I thought it was a problem in the hinge area but it turned out to be a protrusion along the sides. Best of luck with it.

I removed a dash without the storage box & which just had the shallow depression that you have and replaced it with one that had a box fitted (had to change it because of airbag deployment) I took the time to compare the two and all that is needed is to carefully cut a hole through using the bottom of the depression as a guide, its all plastic and unless you go at it with a power jigsaw there is nothing underneath to obstruct your cut or to get damaged.

I compared them because I had already bought a storage box, I part X'd my old dahs for a recon one that came as part of an "Airbag kit" (dash, airbags, seatbelt mechs etc) and expected to recieve another standard dash but in fact it came with a storage box so I did not have that job to do but it looked straightforward, for me, like you the bog unknown was what would be underneath. - You have no worries and the box is so much better than an open tray.

I have done the same mod with the open storage box under the heater controls, I modified an Octavia one, I started a thread about it and got trolled :D, I have also just started one about creating other storage areas on the Yeti, one area where it lags behind the Octavia but can be equalled for little or no cost using confinement time.

Thanks for your advice I have no completed the task I will try and put some photoes on here just incase someone else is going to try the same thing as us, I to used a Stanley knife. I have also changed the dash aperance and upgraded the original Radio, and fitted columbus RNS-510 and a Reversing camra.

Hi all,

New to the forum.

I have a 2010 base model yeti with the tray as opposed to the box. Wondered if anyone had made an insert for the tray or indeed a replacement to include cup holders that actually fit cups as opposed to the OEM cup holders.

Thanks.
