Fabia 1.4 now non runner ;-(

Featured Replies

I have a problem with our Skoda Fabia 1.4 16V

Recently replaced the starter but 2 days later it started playing up again!

Firstly it would not start straight away... then it did but was lumpy and had no throttle reponse.

It would drive but only at low RPM.

Parked up and tried to restart but it turns over lots then finally starts

EPC LIGHT ON DASH AND BEEPS

Using a Sealy Diagnostic tool it gave a fault for the

Throttle Valve

Throttle Actuator

Throttle ???

The Throttle body butterfly does not move with the engine not running should it??

I want to check to see if it is the throttle body failed how do I do that, what would you recommend doing to test it?

Can I test using a meter any of the Conecting plugs for voltage and resistance.

I have tried to source a throttle body in the scrap yards but cant find one to try so don't want to shell out for a new one to find that it wasn'nt the problem....

Please help

Thanks!

its not totally unheard of for the v60 throttle position motor to break or go open ciruit, i know this might sound like stating the obvious but have you checked its still plugged in?

what engine code is it? i might have a throttle body for one of those knocking about at home

When the engine is not running, with the ignition in the run position, the butterfly valve should move (dependent on the accelerator pedal etc working of course).

+1 for the v60 motor has packed up.

The Engine code in the Service Book is 75Kw AUB

The Part No. 036 133 062 A (On the Throttle Body)

just had a rummage through my secret stash, i dont have one sadly.. i would have put money on having one of those at home.

all is not lost though, that body is used on about 20ish different engine codes across the vag group so they shouldnt be too hard to find second hand  id suggest trying clubpolo

Thanks for looking

Can anyone recommend a breaker I have tried all the local ones.

Does the mpi and 16v share the same TB? If so i'll have a spare soon...

I have now recieved another throttle body from an online breaker.

Fitted it but now lost the spark!

It was sparking prior as it would run rough but no throttle response.

What would cause a sudden loss of spark??

Would I need to clear all the faults, would stored faults stop it running??

It now doesn't turn over?

  • Author

Yes it turns over, and I can hear the fuel pump

checked the cam timing and is ok.

But no spark?

That's odd, did you unplug anything when you changed the throttle body over? Have you tried reverting back to the original throttle body to see if it goes back to sparking again?

Wiring to ignition coil come loose?

I have double checked the leads but all is plgged in tight and connections look good.

Having taken the coil pack off I have noticed there is a small crack in the plastic.

I'm guessing it's the coil pack failed unless there is any other suggestions?????????

Yes the coil packs do crack and give up, something burns out inside, good bet that's it. It's also a possible crankshaft sensor, if they go down the ecu doesn't then fire coil pack.

Problems with throttle bodies are quite common, also worth noting there are numerous software updates for the 1.4 16v also to sort all kinds of running issues.

Software updates for 1.4 16v - does that include the BBYs and do any of these updates include sorting out excessive pinking? (sorry for high jacking this thread!)

Could well do, we don't always get details of what they do exactly.

Thanks for that, maybe I should go and have a chat at my local VW dealer - though they might not exactly know which update that car would need as its still got its original issue of software/firmware loaded.

Just had car code read again fault codes are p1581 p1612 p1545 p1440 any suggestions please help  :'(

P1581 Throttle control unit - basic setting Basic setting not carried out

P1545 Throttle valve control - malfunction Throttle valve tight/sticking, wiring, throttle control unit

P1440 Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve - open circuit - Wiring open circuit, EGR valve

P1612 Engine control module (ECM) - coding Incorrectly coded

Right. P1545 and P1581 should be solved if the throttle body you have is working properly... You should be able to see the throttle body doing a basic adaptation with the ignition on but not turned to crank. If that's the case, unless the fault codes were cleared previously they'd always stay there.

EGR open circuit might be an issue, but i'd not think that would stop the car starting...

The one i'd be more concerned with is P1612... Seems to believe that there's some incorrect coding going on?

You could try resetting the ECU by disco-ing the battery.

Yeah, leaving it off for a little while might remedy the issue.

The Car is now running!

Had it running a few days with the EBC light coming one only once...

To get it running;

Had the codes re-read - sames faults shown

checked old throttlebody - still the same

replacement coil pack fitted - weak and intermittant spark with plug removed as with old pack?

The guy who came round to code read it checked the Volts at the coil pack and it was a low reading!

He spent a couple of hours checking through the wiring - tracing the fault back to a loose wire on the ignition switch.

So its now running with the old throttlebody so that must have been a false code and the ignition switch wiring was at fault.

That's brilliant news!

Glad you've got it up and running :)
