Haggle haggle haggle with insurance companies!

Featured Replies

My renewal came through last week with Brentacre for £1300 a drop of £200 from going from a Ibiza Cupra R to the Vrs, not very happy with a small drop for a considerably less powerful car and an extra 1 years ncb. I called flux up and straight away gave me £849, called back to tell Brentacre not to renew my policy. They magically dropped it to £849!

I thought i'd go with them until i realised i had to pay another deposit even though i've been with them for a year, so i had to sort some money out due to just buying coilovers :p

Realising this bartering seemed to work i thought i'd try my luck one more time. Told Flux that Brentacre had matched £849, i was put on hold for a min and they came back and said £767 is the best they can do and no more. Called brentacre back and they couldn't match it. So i went with Flux :)

The thing which gets me is legally i have to take insurance cover so they've pretty much got you, so these companies are meant to be regulated to give fair prices. Surely the first time i called up i should have been given £767 and not had to play them off each other?

Anyway this isn't a rant its just to make others aware that you shouldn't always take their first price and assume that's the best price they can offer!

Yeah agree with you on that mate they should give their best price first time but then again if they can make extra coin why not? I know its not fair but thats life.

When they ask me "have you had any other quotes" even if the best ive had so far is £500 for eg i always say "£350" lol see what they do :)

I haggle on everything  , after all "fair" to who? a business has to make money as well....

there are discounts to be had everywhere but its a sad truth that we Brits just dont seem to like to haggle.

even the AA / RAC can be haggled down to just a few £ it you have the cheek to try it :giggle:

anywhere that does "intrest free credit" is a good candidate for discounts - when was the last time you noticed a bank lending money for 0%! someone pays the interest and guess what - its the customer - they just add it to the price :p so if you dont want the credit there ia a discount to be had.

about the only place I wont haggle is a charity shop - after all it is for charity ;)

nice work on your saving though 40% is always a good discount

It's like being in he Medinas of Egypt and Tunisia, Haggle Haggle Haggle, with a free mint tea and bubble pipe. All part of the game mate.

Jesus, i thought £495 was pricey... and that N.Ireland where we are bummed useless over insurance premiums.

And once you tell them you've got coilovers fitted, which of course you will because you won't be insured otherwise, you can expect the premium to go back up to £850.

You're not actually getting a great deal with the insurance company, just the price they could have always offered you in the first place, if they weren't such thieving barstewards.

You used to be able to haggle a new phone deal at the end of the contract but I've just left O2 today because they weren't willing to do anything other than the deals on their website, which for SIM only, are ridiculous. Bye bye O2! Hello Tesco mobile :)

Cant wait to reinsure a car after my ban.... Woohoo

My insurance, with the same company as I always use, had slowly dropped from 680 to 600 ish over the last 3 years, each time I've expected a bigger drop but their looked online to find there price is right "It's insurance tax blah blah blah"...

However, this year the same company sent my renewal through asking for a cheeky...wait for it.... £1200 (my car, boys and girls, is standard)!!!..

So, I looked online, most people coming in at £700.. "oh FFS, it's actually gone up this year" I thought.. but £1200 was a bit steap so I called them and opened with

"So, I got my renewal, and after 3 years you've decided to double my quote.. I was simply wondering if you could explain why, before I leave you?"..

About ten minutes later they've dropped it to £400, all in! Sweet!

Still, 600 up to £1200 with no explanation.. I'm a year older, with another years no claims,.. I'll never work out how they got to that calculation. :giggle:

Bloody hell, I bought my 2005 fabia VRS about a month and a half ago and my insurance from a 306 meridian came down by £75 to £ 190 for the furby for a year. Thought it wasn't to bad considering the performance. Am an older fart reaced the big 40 this year thou.

Best to check the prices of as many companies as possible with sites like confused.com (putting a fake phone number in to prevent annoying calls, I quite like putting 0906 numbers in, lol).

Urgh. Insurance. Such a joke.

Just got my renewal through at £727.61 with Admiral, which I think is pretty much what I paid last year. A quick comparison site search comes up with £577.09 from Elephant, and they're basically the same company from what I gather.

What. A. Joy.

No one's mentioned excesses which can alter premiums dramatically - usually...

However I did an online quote yesterday and it came back with a good price - but I noticed that as well as the £200 Compulsory Excess there was a £250 Voluntary Excess applied. I changed the box to £0 Voluntary Excess and hit the "Recalculate" button. Guess what - absolutely no change in the premium at all! So some people using that site may unwittingly land up with a £450 excess rather than a £200 one...

Another tip...

Try the site sponsors, stating Briskoda membership

Adrian flux knocked over £200 off for being a member on here and they were already the cheapest I could find

Joe

Just got my renewal from Hastings Direct - £315 including all fees (but not break down)

Not gonna even haggle with that because I made a claim last November when a slid on snow/ice around a corner into another car (only doing ~15mph)

And I also have to disclose the accident the year before when a teenager hit me from behind while I was waiting at a junction!!

Jigger 72, My mods are covered, already told them about coilovers to save a £25 charge in a couple of weeks once I get them from dpm :(

I know what you mean, you feel its a good price because it's been knocked down, sadly only being 22 means I'm still classed as in the high risk age :( I think £767 is pretty good.

I wouldn't argue with that price either Chris!

Glad I'm not the only one who haggles :)

Always shop around, last year my quote was £480, the renewal was £600.. After ringing them and asking why it had gone on they dropped it to £570.

Naturally told them to leave it and found a quote for £420.. Result!

You're only 22 and it's THAT low :o Happy days for you

I turn 40 next year and I'm still paying £500 for a standard Superb TDI, with 8 years NCB and totally clean license, etc. It's not the most desirable postcode but it ain't L8 anymore and I've never had any trouble in our area. The postcode excuse is just a license to print money
