Rear door foils

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been covered before, but has anyone here tried fitting the protective foils to the rear door of their Yeti ? Our 60-plate Yeti just missed out on having these factory fitted, and I noticed some stone chipping starting, so I ordered the foils from the local Skoda dealer. I took them up to my local garage for fitting - the guy there very carefully cleaned up the paint and door edges to remove all dirt, wax etc, but even with the utmost care, the first one looked terrible when it was on - lots of blisters, air bubbles etc. - he only fitted the nearside one, and it looked so bad, we decided he should take it off, which he duly did, with a bit of careful persuasion from a hot air gun. I am now exploring the option of having some slightly thinner foils made, using the offside skoda foil as a template, and getting these put on by my neighbour, who does van sign-writing/plastic covering for a living.

Hi Pete. Yes fitting of the foils has been extensively covered before here on Briskoda.

I fitted my own with no problems whatsoever and posted a guide in the Yeti Technical Guides Section. Link = HERE

I think that some of the dealers think that as they are self adhesive that all they have to do is stick them in place without reading the Škoda fitting instructions, which tell them that it MUST be done using soapy water.

Try printing off the instructions and then ask them how they did it. If they did not follow the Škoda fitting instructions - MAKE THEM PAY FOR THE NEW ONES! Show them the instructions and they will not have a leg to stand on - Anyway, I hope this helps.......................Tony

PS If you follow the guide, You will have beautifully clear Foils with no blemishes or air bubbles just like the factory fitted ones (and mine!)

This week I had my first service at 15500 miles and mentiond the foils (59 Plate). When my SM was returned all spick & span. The dealership (Liverpool)said they had found stone chipping and they would book it in for spraying and to fit the foils under warranty.

I fitted my own, after reading Great Yeti's excellent guide no problem.

Great Yeti

Thanks for the guide - I should have given this to my local garage (they are not Skoda dealers, just a very helpful local village garage that service/repair all makes at very reasonable labour rates). He did not charge me for trying to fit the nearside one, because he realised it looked awful ! I'll perhaps take the plunge and try to fit the offside one myself using your guide. It that is successful, I might get a replacement nearside one.

Thanks again

I've just had my rear doors resprayed and foils fitted under warranty

I've just had my rear doors resprayed and foils fitted under warranty

Same here. I had one very obvious stone chip on the nearside but when I looked - and more importantly felt - more closely I realised that there were lots of tiny blemishes on the paintwork. My local dealer (not the one I bought the car from) looked at the car and agreed, photographed the damaged areas and sent them off to SUK. Later the same day he called me back to book the car in to have the work done. It was completed to a very high standard. They also replaced the door rubbing strips. All done for free under warranty, as SUK have basically realised that they were going to get hit with lots of paintwork warranty claims further down the line because the foils had been "forgotten" (it's still not clear why UK spec cars without the off-road kit didn't get them).

So my recommendation to the OP would be to stop spending your own time and money trying to fix the problem yourself, and get SUK to step up and fix it for you via your local Skoda dealer.

Ours is going in on Monday to have this done as well as a few other warranty jobs.

I agree with above posters. I took my Yeti for its first service and pointed out the stone chips. SUK are doing the work under warranty and replacing the Skoda badges that are showing signs of the white worm that has been discussed before on this forum.

I don't know whether mine is a isolate case, but because mine are too small (it felt slightly bumpy) the dealer could not take a photo because it would not show up, anyway might try another soon before the 2 year factory warranty is out.

This is the way forward

Decided to have a go at fitting the offside foil this afternoon, using Great Yeti's technical guide - it went pretty well, and it looked much, much better than the nearside one that my village garage tried to fit (dry) yesterday. However, I was left with one annoying air bubble on the door edge, that I could not get rid of, even with some warmth from the hair dryer, so I decided to take the foil off. I will probably take the consensus advice give here, and wait for next year's service, then see if the dealer will respray the stone-chipped areas, and fit the foils properly for me. I have probably wasted about £ 30 on this unsuccessful attempt to fit the foils myself. I am a bit annoyed that the Skoda dealer did not supply any fitting instructions - when I picked them up, I asked the guy on the parts desk if there was any special way of fitting them, and he said no -just peel off the backing and stick them on ! I might go back to them and complain, - they might offer to supply/fit a free pair for me - you never know.

Pete, would you ask for instructions to fit an engine? Rock up to the dealer on Monday and tell him to sort out the chip and foil under warranty, it will happen. Dont let the damage get worse waiting a year. ;)

Thanks Ray

Of course you are right here - this is a problem that has arisen due to Skoda erroneously not fitting foils to UK models until late last year. The reasons I attempted to address the problem myself were:

- My 60 plate Yeti (only bought 2 months ago with just 2000 miles on the clock) only has two stone chips on the nearsise, with a bit of 'roughening' of the paint, and no blemishes on the offside at the moment. My guess is that if I took it into my nearest Skoda dealer (about 20 miles away)they would tell me to go away, as they would not think there was a problem, but I could be wrong.

- My dealings with this dealer so far suggest to me they have not get much experience yet with Yetis and their problems (we did not buy the car from them,, because they had none in stock, and basically told us they were really hard to get hold of, would have to wait 9 months for one etc.). When I ordered the steel wheels from them for the winter tyres they thought I was a bit strange wanting such things, and they then went and ordered the wrong wheels (6J instaed of 7J). Similarly, when I ordered the foils, the attitide seemed to be 'what do you want those for ?' , and first pair they orderd in had a big crease down the middle, so I got them to replace them. They are nice friendly people to deal with, but I do not get a feeling of confidence that they are familiar with Yetis and their issues.

- The dealer I bought the car from is in Lincoln (70 miles away), with alternative dealers at least 35 miles away in Cambridge or Ely. Having the responsibility of running a small business, I just do not have the time to spend travelling to dealers, arranging drop-off, pick-ups etc.

I will probably get a Skoda garage to sort this out at some stage, but it will not be feasible this Monday (or the rest of this week, due to a packed diary).

Thanks again

Pete

Good luck Pete. Skoda will sort it
