Clutch Judder

Featured Replies

Hi all

Octavia 07 vRS 2.0tdi PD

Iv only owned my octavia for about 3 weeks now and i think its brill although it has been to the garage once already due to gerabox issues.

Changing from gear to gear it would feel clunky and unrefined so skoda advised me to change the oil, its been changed today and there has been major improvement and even the mechanic said the oil that came out was the worst he has seen in a while.

Now having driving the car round town at low speed i keep getting clutch judder but only changing from 3rd to 4th (it was doing this before the oil change) when i do change the car is not low on revs so im not putting any load on clutch, it only does it for a spilt second but its annoying

Any suggestions? the car is still under warranty from skoda but i did get the oil changed at a local garage as i refuse to pay £160 for labour alone.

Do you think Skoda would change it under warranty?

they should do if the car is still in warranty

thats the second car iv had with a dmf...and the second one to go! :/

Just been on the phone to dealership and they did not want to say if it was covered or not...i dont see why not its not really a wear and tear part

having the same issue with our dealer along with a charcoal canister that they arent sure if its covered under warranty yet will strip down and repair the gearbox...hmmm..good old reliable skoda.

Its not worth the paper its written on most of the time.

Bought the car 52,000 miles and iv dont 1,500 miles in the past 3 weeks.

The salesman who dealt with everything couldt do enough for me and seems always eager to help and did over the phone but obviously he can say yes to me and then find out they cant replace it.

The only problem is though it only does it every now and then, yes it is becoming more frequent but its not every single time. Is there any test they can conduct to prove if it is at fault or not?

Thanks for your help mike, ill take it down tomorrow after work and hopfuly they will not put up too much of a fight.

Funny thing is i took it in 2 weeks ago with the clunky gear change that has been resolved by the oil changed i mentioned the clutch judder and he ignored that i had mentioned it...now i know why!

Agree with Mike thats a DMF fault.

Had mine done under warranty at 35K and it was converted by Skoda to SMF with a new clutch too.Totally different car to drive now.Ultra smooth and quiet and much more responsive

Good luck with yours

Right went back to dealership yesterday, they have confirmed its on its way out but will not cover it yet as it not that broken yet.

This is fine as it will eventually go but my mk4 golf had a broken (infact knackered) DMF and that managed to do 25,000 miles on it and obviously the further into the warranty i go the less likely they are to change it.

So say for example it takes 6 months to finally die will they just turn around and say iv been driving wrong therefore will not change it? even though i have made them aware of it after only 3 weeks of ownership?

If the car is juddering then it's not fit for purpose - it's as simple as that.

Skoda provide the warranty on their used cars for this very reason. Remember you pay for the warranty when you buy a Skoda approved used car, it's just included in the screen price.

I'd be on the phone to Skoda Customer Care, be firm but polite and tell them your not happy and that you want the fault that has been diagnosed and confirmed by the dealer fixed ASAP.

The mechanic i spoke to said to fully diagnose and 100% be sure that the dmf is going is to take the gearbox off (4 hours work) if it turns out its not within their tolerances to change it i will be landed with the labour charge at £100 per hour

the car had a major episode of clutch judder today (shook the whole car) when it was cold so there are signs of it defiantly going but obviously the mechanic was not there to see it.

I bought the car from DM Keith York which are a main dealership and a friend has told me to take it further, sending an email to the boss man saying that is going to come back to get the DMF changed at some point so why not just do it now? but ill give skoda customer care a ring, thanks :)

Update:

rung customer services, the have taken my case, spoken to one of their techys and apparently the dmf has to be out by 9 teeth i think. obviously the box would have to come off and its only worth while when it could be possibly near 9 teeth, i that makes sense.

Customer services are going to contact the dealer and see if they can get any further forward with it as i stressed that i dont mind how long it takes to be deemed ok to change but i dont want the warranty to reject the repair claim.

I use DM Keith too, did you speak to Steve, he's generally pretty good.

I wouldn't back down on this one, there is clearly a fault with the car evident by the fact it judders.

You don't need to know how many "teeth are within tolerance" you just want them to fix the judder under the warranty provided by Skoda to protect you against scenario's just like this.

What exactly that incurs is between DM Keith and Skoda UK.

Im not going to back down, im not paying just shy of 10k for a car and have to go back and forth to the garage after only a few weeks of ownership, the guys at DM Keith have been helpful but they do have rules to stick to

The person i spoke to on the phone, ben, says he will chase this up as he can see both sides of the story.

They seem to make out that the warranty is there to protect me but as you made a good point, iv paid for it, they have not done it out of the kindness of their hearts

Is it not the case that Approved Skodas are covered by a 30 day replacement promise?

If it ain't right, tell the dealer you want the car replacing with an alternative. That will concentrate their minds.

Failling that, demand your money back since it is not "of merchantable quality"?

Just a thought.

Ema_jane i have exactly the same issue as you but mines is a petrol, i have a report from an independent transmission specialist who without even touching the car pushed the clutch up and down while it was running and straight away said there is excessive play in the DMF and both the clutch and DMF need replaced.

Contact my local dealer who then...and i can see there side too but they hit me with "it well within parameters and if we replace it and Skoda says its ok we or you have to foot the bill"

Its an utter disgrace and i will be persuing this further even if it does mean legal action and reports to every national newspaper and BBC Watchdog.

Dont let this go.

Thanks for all words of wisdom guys! im not giving up on this one :)

The person who i spoke to from skoda customer services said that all my contact with them will be kept on record and advised me that if i ever have trouble with the warranty about replacing the DMF then the phone call from today will back me up, sounds like he was making out that this has been the case before.

To be totally honest i think the DMF is going to do its own work, just come back from middlesbrough and the dmf got a little bit emotional with itself a few times, so yes the frequency of the clutch judder is becoming more apparent

I just dont know what to do now, apparently my case will be taken further and they will contact DM Keith for me, so do i just wait to hear a verdict from them or what?

Does your car struggle to start in the morning?

  • Author

Yeah thats something else i have noticed, past few mornings have been getting cooler and it still starts first time but is very unrefined, theres a bang before the engine kicks in, i was going to ask skoda about it but got completely side tracked, i thought it could just do with some new glow plugs but iv been told they dont kick in untill it like 1 degrees or something

Cool, i thought it would as i have had the starter motor replaced, it was fine for the first week or so now it struggle to start and the starter stays on after the engine starts apparently they are linked together in a way that the DMF is mashing up the starter.

Had a phone call back from customer services this afternoon, they are ringing the boss man of DM Keith and will discuss the matter with him and said will keep me updated, heard nothing as of yet, i still think they are going to say they will not fix untill its completely knackered like
