Winter wheels on

Featured Replies

I've just put my 185/55 15s on (as recommended by the dealership). Seem very snug around the front calipers but do rotate freely. Now just need to get some caps to put on.

Are those the original steels?

I want to paint mine like yours, but all the steels (including mine) seem to have the alternating hole pattern of large and small ovals around the edge which wouldn't quite look right, unlike yours which are all of equal size

They came off a VW beetle.

As long as its 5x100 pattern you should be ok. I know on some Pug's the "holes" are more arrow shaped to look sporty. Tbh it doesn't matter.

Good Year Ultra Grip 8 mini review:

First real snow has hit Dundee, its about an inch, if that deep so nothing crazy. The grip feels supreme, like driving on a summers day. If the car does slide its so easy to control. It's almost as if it eggs you on to try and get it to slide a bit :D

Tyre contact foot print is tiny. Its thinner than my shoe (size 9) so cutting through the heavy stuff should be fairly easy. Comparing it to other tracks in the snow its quite surprising.

Exactly my thoughts after driving on winters.........now on for the third year running!!!.. B)

Not had any snow that's settled yet but I have noticed the difference when the road is wet and the temperature is around freezing, the grip is fantastic.

starting to consider some winter wheels as i do a lot of out of ours driving due to working shifts so they make sense to me

if i buy complete with steels, will the original wheels nuts work with the steels or do i need to buy a new set?

also what do you recon on maxxis brand, good for bikes but never had on cars but there about the cheapest named brand i can find on a quick search

If you buy VAG steelies they should fit yes.

Tbh its like most tyres. I tent to buy the higher end ones because they are the only thing that keep me on the ground. Your standard affair really, Anything from the top 5, or the usual asian ones like Nexen, Toyo, Khumo etc.

Any dedicated winter tyre will be better than a summer tyre, its just how much you want to spend.

its mytyres im looking at, only place ive thought about trying

I thought of getting winter tires so I bought 2 sets of trims from aldi only £ 4.99 reduced to clear they seem fine just get some skoda wheel stickers for the centre and good as new ;)

Have a look for reviews online. I went for Nankangs Snow SV-2 like many others, good reviews around the internet and came in at <£50 per corner. Genuine Skoda steels are £42 each, tho if your parts guy is friendly it shouldn't be too hard to haggle some discount. Steels, tyres and fitting came in at about £370 for me

All the best!

thanks for that miffy

Note new tyres are normally 8mm tread depth so a worn tyre can be less in circumference

If you live in between Birmingham and Manchester from east to west be ready for the first real snow of winter, the white stuff will be with us between Thursday & Saturday , OMG I wish I had winter tires on ;)

I live in Whitchurch, Shropshire which is smack bang in the middle of Birmingham & Manchester but luckily i bought a set of 15" steel wheels and tyres from a Skoda dealer with Brigstone Blizzak 195/55 R15 tyres, to use on my Monte Carlo.

But i have traded the Monte Carlo in for a Fabia vRS which i collect on Friday (16/12/11) i am keeping my winter wheel package and plan on fitting them to my vRS as soon as possible after collection, but i have to drive to Sheffield to collect the car which takes me up and over the top of the peak district, so i hope it is only a light dusting.

I will ask the Skoda dealer where i bought my winter wheel/tyres from if they will fit the vRS, but i am sure they will as the Monte Carlo has 17" alloys fitted as standard, so i cannot see a problem.

I'll second that. I've got 15s on my vRS and no issue, was a bit worried when I saw how close the caliper is to the rim but there is a gap.

Do you have any wheel trims for them? I haven't put any on mine but am slowly looking around for some.

I've still got the 15 x 6inch oem steels in the shed. what is the smallest width winter wheels i can put on without too much stretch. 175? 185 wide?

I was worried also when i put them on the Monte as the calipers are really close to the rim, I don't think i will bother with wheel trims, just seems a waste of money for something thats going to be dirty most of the winter months anyway.

With so many people fitting winter tires, there's bound to be no snow for years.

The best I've had this year is about 3cm of slush. Crazy, traffic halting stuff.

We've had about 4 or 5 lots of snow so far :-)

Here in Whitchurch, Shropshire we have not had any snow yet but temperature has been arouns the 1 degree mark and i had to take my winter wheels off my Monte Carlo as it is going tomorrow and i put the 17" wheels/tyres back on and i noticed that there was not as much grip, whereas the winter tyres give you more confidence and better feedback.

Lucky sods having snow. I'm wanting to try out these bad boys in the real stuff! A heavy frost tonight but nothing spectacular.

This time last year it was 3ft deep.
