4WD system for fabia vRS project

Featured Replies

Ok so here it goes.. Ive managed to get hold of a volkswagen group 4wd system that i am planning on mateing with my fabia vrs.. Im giving myself 12 months to get it done properly but ive checked all areas o make sure its compatible in theory so wish me luck:d

With the 7speed DSG box?

You should get the s2000 kit ;-)

Now that I want to see!!!

Only concern is the gearbox / drivetrain... Are they compatible?

Good luck with it emoticon-0148-yes.gif

but i think the vag 4wd systems well not fits the fabia emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

Bonkers!!

Yep they will was reading up that they are bringing out an audi a1 quattro and theyve already got a prototype mocked up thats been driven by many magazines.. With same engine and gearbox.. Also theres talk of a polo r with 4motion. Basically the quattro system on a tt can be easily converted to the polo/a1/fabia format., so been to a breakers and got myself a quattro system:d

Yepaudi have already used same engine gearbox with an a1 quattro due out next year

Will be an interesting project, the A1 Quattro and the rumoured Polo 4 motoion use the new later platform that is designed to except 4wd though. The earlier platform that the Fabia sits on never was.

Would love to see this. Dificult projject though. Where have you sourced the 4wd parts

About the platform but I think the facelift Fabia actually runs the new platform if you compare to the pre-facelift the dimensions including wheelbase are different the entire front end looks to be off the polo including the suspension, engine mounts and front bumper in order to fit the new engines in. Even the rear seats are different and look to be from polo/ ibiza.

Will be interesting to see still think they should do a 4 wheel drive scout hatch and estate would buy one of those if they bought it out, this still sounds like a complicated project.

I have the 2012 model which is the later platform.. Its exact to the bolt the same as audi a1 and polo.. Eyve literally not changed anything on the a1 other then the awd..

I also found that audi had put a sweeeeeet 2litre tfsi lump out of golf gti in the a1 with quattro, now that would be a nice project ;) they claimed 0-60 was 5.9 seconds and they had to restrict it to 155!! You can get a remap for golf gti engine to take it to golf R standards 265bhp ish!! I reckon ith quattro that would have ya easily in sub 5.5 sec 0-60!!

Create a project/blog page and get some pics of ur doner parts up...Brilliant project!

Mine does consistent 5.6 0-60 in the wet with only 213hp and fwd, thars with proper timing equipment

I can totally believe that because i reckon the 0-60 time skoda quote as standard is well off what it can actually do but they couldnt have it down on paper as faster than the octavia lol! Ye the a1 with the 2 litre was a manual tho but im sure with a dsg it would be way quicker.. Apparently that was in the wet aswell to Prove the quattro

Will do as soon as it arrives:d

No it isn't.

The Audi A1, 2008 onwards Ibiza and the 2009 onwards Polo all use the VAG A05 PQ25 "Small Car" Platform.

The Current 5J model Fabia uses the older VAG A04 PQ24 "Small Car" Platform.

The major difference between the two platforms is the PQ25 was specifically designed to execpt AWD.

The current Fabia platform was not designed to except a propshaft, rear diff, rear drive shafts, driven wheel hubs and the suspension sytstem to cope with new layout.

You will have to modify the Fabia floor pan to house a transmission tunnel for the propshaft and then modify the complete rear end to accept the diff, halfshafts, hubs and suspension. All these components will require custom mounts welding to the chassis.

The Haldex setup you have can't be designed for the A1 or Polo as they haven't been launched yet so you will have a system of at least Golf size which means you will need to customise all the propshafts and driveshafts and mounts.

It's far from impossible but will require a large amount of cutting and welding to your current platform and some high quality engineering on the 4WD components and suspension mounts to ensure reliabilty and handling remain acceptable. It will also be very expensive unless you have your own workshop to do this. Might be as cheap to sell the Fabia and buy a Golf R.

The PQ25 platform is mainly developed for the addition of AWD systems, otherwise its the same as the PQ24.

Starting with a PQ24 car to fit an awd system is going to be interesting :)

May also want to check the compatability of the haldex AWD system you have to the current 7 speed dry clutch DSG in the Fabia. As far as I know this combination has never been produced by VAG.

New Car + Old 4wd System + Possible Failure Of New Car, Money And Time = W13VRS Epic Balls

Good Luck Mate, I Hope It Works Out, Cant Wait to See This Progress

It's an immense project, I used to rally classics and had a HS2.3 Vauxhall Chevette shell that ran a Ford Xflow engine, Quaife gearbox, Opel Manta rear axle and suspension, custom propshaft and Quaife LSD.

To fit things in cars that don't have the correct space, hangers and mounts is a massive amount of work and requires specific jigs making up to get the mounts and hangers spot on, any error in alignment will severly effect long term reliablity.

Currently beside the cutting and welding I think the major issue will be fitting a haldex to the 7 speed DSG as the current internal arrangement only has the standard front diff with left and right output shafts.

Checked with skoda pq24 platform was on previous fabia i.e before headlight and grill change.. If you get what they call a 2012 model i.e with black lights and grill as standard they had changed platform to pq25 in line with volkswagen groups policy surrounding sharing same chassis etc.. Jack two up you will se difference underneith.. My dads got the chrome headlights in a green vrs and underneith his is way more compact. There will be welding needed as skoda have filled the spaces that you would assume the awd would go. The guy at skoda laughed when i told him the plan but said he wasnt surprised and that maybe skoda will follow audi and vdub...i hope that it wad a hint lol.. And speaking to a volkswagen expert about the haldex setup, he revealed that its based on the tt quattro system which was the first small quattro system designed by audi.. I got a 2007 tt quattro system out of a 2.0 tfsi as far as im aware

I expect barriers in this project but i dont feel they are as big as you claim

Audi used exact same engine and gearbox for their test bed and still only had a dry clutch..

Yep but their development prototype 7 speed DSG has it's internals and casing modified to give a third power take off for the Haldex. I also believe the box isn't the DQ200 fitted to the Fabia as it only has a 250NM limit and that won't be enough for the Audi RS1 or the PoloR. Word is the cars will use a version of the DQ500 dry clutch box developed for the Audi TT that was designed from the beginning to use Haldex.

What are you planning to bolt the haldex to and where will it get it's drive from? Currently VAG offer no parts to convert a 7 speed DSG box to run a Haldex.

The MY12 Fabia has exactly the same rear end and mounts as the earlier cars, I have both on my drive, you will still need to fabricate and weld on everything for the rear end as per my earlier posts. There is no provision on the Fabia whatever it's model year for propshaft, rear diff, halfshafts, driven hubs or the mounts for a suspension sytem that will allow all that to be fitted.

Not trying to diss the project but I've been involved in these projects before and you need to understand all the implications before you waste a lot of money or ruin your new car
