4WD system for fabia vRS project

+1 from me. I dont have all the specific technical knowledge on the fabia platform to decide whether it would be feasible or not but I've read quite a few similar "ambitious" conversions to some other forums of other cars in the past.

What usually happens is lots of people coming and saying "oh, I like the idea, good luck, can't wait! etc. etc." except from 1-2 scepticals that mention some actual technical issues, and are mostly met with dissaproval. In the end however, everybody wonders at what stage the project is and why the guy that started it has not given any update for the last 10 months...

Modifications such as this are nearly impossible to complete while at the same time achieving a factory-like quality, not to mention future possible complexes, inexisting guarantee in case something goes wrong and lots lots of money, when it would be make more sense to sell the car in the first place and buy a used one in good condition, similar to the goal of the project (4WD car).

But actually considering this on a brand new car, which has already cost a considerable amount of money, that is way too crazy for me. Of course you may be a mechanic, with a big budget and lot of time to spend experimenting...

I repeat that is just my view on the subject. If everything works well in the end I would love it as this would prove that such modifications are not that impossible as we have due to past experiences, been made to believe they are...

Yep but their development prototype 7 speed DSG has it's internals and casing modified to give a third power take off for the Haldex. I also believe the box isn't the DQ200 fitted to the Fabia as it only has a 250NM limit and that won't be enough for the Audi RS1 or the PoloR. Word is the cars will use a version of the DQ500 dry clutch box developed for the Audi TT that was designed from the beginning to use Haldex.

What are you planning to bolt the haldex to and where will it get it's drive from? Currently VAG offer no parts to convert a 7 speed DSG box to run a Haldex.

The MY12 Fabia has exactly the same rear end and mounts as the earlier cars, I have both on my drive, you will still need to fabricate and weld on everything for the rear end as per my earlier posts. There is no provision on the Fabia whatever it's model year for propshaft, rear diff, halfshafts, driven hubs or the mounts for a suspension sytem that will allow all that to be fitted.

Ye i heard about the new gearbox and that its possibly only going to be a 6 speed.. Maybe similar to one in golf r?

No specs have been released for the box as far as I know but currently the only box that will handle that torque, will fit a small transverse engine bay and run a haldex is the wet clutch 6 speed DSG. I doubt they will want to fit that to the RS1 though as it's the original DSG that needs oil changes and isn't as crisp or efficeint as the dry clutch box. The Polo R could uses the six speed wet clutch as does the Golf GTi and Golf R.

The other option is the new DQ500 which is a 7 speed dry clutch that can handle 600NM but has been designed to fit larger cars and vans with transverse engines and will eventually replace the six speed unit. VW are planning to launch this box on a new twin turbo 2.0Tdi with outputs upto 240bhp and 500nm. Audi uses this box on the TT but not sure if it will fit the A1.

Ive only heard that the new twin turbo engine will be produced with up to 202bhp... Shame that they are behind bmw though with twin turo diesels.. Hopefully it will give the same gains as the bmw with a remap.. Most tuners can get 265bhp out of the standard 200bhp bmw engine with nothing more than a remap!

180bhp and 202bhp versions at launch I believe but that still only matches the Ford Mondeo top diesel and leaves them short of premium German brands. On the Audi forums they are suggesting this unit will be available with 240bhp so the A6 can compete with the forthcoming upgraded Merc E Class which has had a 201bhp 2.0TDi since 2009. And of course as you say BMW have had a 200bhp 2.0TDi since 2007.

I have a remapped 185bhp 295lbft DSG Passat but my woekmate has an Alpina D3 with the BMW 2.0TDi twin turbo with 214bhp and the ease he can pull away from me is unreal. I think once moving it isn't that far off my old 260bhp Series McRae Impreza, great technology from BMW and Alpina and it still manages 50mpg on a gentle run out.

Ye the new 2 litre twin turbo is currently in the new 525 bmw and they managed to squeeze 218 bhp out of it now and a combine cycle of 56 mpg which is just unreal. They replaced the old 3 litre 6 cylinder lump for the 2 litre twin turbo out of the 123d so its not currently in the 1 series yet but i bet with the weight reduction it will get close to 60mpg combined. The current new 120d that came out this sept has a claimed combined of 61 mpg!!

Anyway sorry im going totally off subject

Any more news on this project??

A 330D 3.0tdi single turbo with 231bhp can be remapped to 300bhp

whereas the 335D 3.0tdi with 271bhp can only be mapped to 310bhp.

a Stage 2 330d with run 330bhp!

so not sure how good the twin turbos actually are

but Audi diesels are c r a p compared to BMW diesels which manage to be both more powerful and more economical

i'm still tempted by an 07/08 330D M sport coupe over a fabia vRS cos the fuel ecomony will be similar

Any more news on this project??

Its still just as crazy a project as it was on the first post.

Wow, old thread bump.

My advise would be to get a VAG car with Quattro and do a transplant.

Which is exactly what my Skoda Citigo is getting...

I love the sound of these plans, but having read BossFOx's thread previously, it's a bit more complicated than just unbolting the body of a Fabia and sticking it on a quattro drivetrain!

That said, can someone offer to convert my Monte Carlo? For around a hundred quid? I'd also need a bit more power - if there's a VAG 3.0 Bi-TDI unit sitting arond that I can have for another £100 or so, I should be able to strap it together with gaffer tape, tie wraps and some bolts.

Can't I?

Hello did you ever get this done if so how much was it?

@Baggyboy13

Welcome to the forum.

The OP has not signed in for 8 years now, but maybe the project is now complete.

You can get cheap older VW Group cars with Haldex and then tune them more.

Starting with a 1.4TSI Twincharger & DQ200 DSG seems like the silliest way to go about things IMHO.

Not sure if he did however one guy done a 1.8 20v turbo conversion(Manual) then sold the car on to Skodaland, Skodaland have now stripped the car, welded in a new floor plan and its about to be an MK2 fabia 20v Turbo 4 wheel drive.
