Nexen Winguard Sport Vs Roadstone Winguard Sport

Featured Replies

Just about made my decision to buy a set of the Nexen Winguard Sport in 205/40/17 for the wifes Monte. Im just a bit confused at the very similar name and price (on Mytyres) to the Roadstone Winguard Sport. I have searched galore but cannot find any reviews on either of these tyres. Has anyone used theses tyres or have knowledge of either of these tyres? Specifically do they have the mountain/snowflake/M+S symbols and is there any difference between them?

Nexen is the same as Roadstone hence the same tred patterns.

But nexen is probably more known brand than roadstone over here. essentialy roadstone are rebranded nexens

I have brought two Roadstone Winguard Sport for the wifes Monte Carlo, there is no difference between the two makes they are the same tyre just branded different, and they do have the snow flake/mountain symbol on them. Hope this helps

Thanks that makes sense. I guess they are a rebrand. Good info that they have the snowflake/mountain symbol. Just ordered a set of the nexens. Still would like a link to a review if anyone has one. Or a forum member who has actually used them in anger haha

I ran Roadstone Winter tyres (205/40/17) on my wife's Fabia II vRS all last winter..They were fantastic and showed little wear too .....after being on the car from November to March

We will be getting them refitted soon

Here are the ones...Bought them from Mytyres too

Nice to hear a positive review cause its actually an unknown brand for me (NEXEN) and I was seriously thinking of having them for winter.

I still can't decide however, If I should be going 15" + rims for the higher profile...

Myself and arny on here are going for steels for a few reasons.

IF you take a trip into the kerb, the bigger tyre should offer a bit more protection to what is a cheaper wheel to replace if it doesn't. Also a risk when parking in the snow when you can't see the kerb properly.

After last years big freeze, the local roads were potholed to buggery, again the talker profile will offer a bit more protection plus ride comfort.

And the lovely Trinity alloys can be tucked away snug and warm away from all the nasty road salt until spring

Skoda steels are £42 approx each from the dealers

Debate I'm looking into. Nexen's seem to get average reviews although 1 or 2 on here seem pleased with them. Only £270 for 4 delivered compared to £400-£450 for 15" steels + medium brand. Decisions...

Obviously they will not offer the best performance out there but I wouldn't be chasing "Best performance" on bad snowy conditions either, whatever tyres I would have fitted. I just don't feel safe pushing the car as I normally would unless I'm back on dry road.

So the question is do they offer acceptable performance at moderate driving? And from the reviews I understand they do. That is enough for me as I know how I will be driving the snowy days.

just ordered 4 of these in 205/40/17 flavour from mytyres :) I got the nexens...

I am seriously considering this as winter is approaching...

I was thinking either this or go straight in there with just regular tyres such as Rainsport 2's and be done with it, or get these cheaper winter tyres and swap them for a decent set of tyres when the cold snap is over.

What does everyone reckon?

cost of winter tyres will be absorbed after a couple years as you are saving wear and tear on your summers. Winter tyres arnt just for xmas. they are for the next one and the one after that!

This is true.

Just to reiterate, this will be for 4x 205/40/R17 Nexus tyres, and getting them fitted to my existing alloys, and then swapping them back when the weather picks up.

I couldn't bear to see mine with steelies on :p

I'm guessing tyres don't deteriorate too quickly, as in I could use the same winter tyres again next year?

Getting a set of steel wheels for winter tyres saves damage to expensive alloys and elliminates any salt damage to the alloys.

While the alloys are off I shall give them a good clean.

Most probably yes, you could use them for at least two years. And frankly the cost to replace them every two years minimum is not that much. Finally, I think I'll be going for the Nexens too.

PS. One thing I like about my car is its black wheels. I couldn't stand seeing it for maybe 4 months of the year with shamefull steelies! If they age quicker then so be it, after all they're available for 136 gbp each so not that big a deal for me. http://www.shop4skoda.co.uk/product/7_x_17%22_Gigaro_Alloy_Wheel_-_Black_S5J0071496D

My thoughts exactly.

Just waiting for the insurance company to get back to me now and find a local tyre fitter that won't rip my alloys to shreds!

checked with my insurance company, and they said as long as they are OE size, they say its no change... dunno what it would be like if I was fitting smaller steelies with different size tyres though...

Insurance company said it is fine to go on current rims, no need to inform them :)

right, my service is tomorow, where I was going to get my winters fitted, and I've heard nothing from mytyres, so e-mailed them, explained I had heard of delays, and said if you can't supply them in the times stated on your website, cancell the order and let me get them somewhere else...

they cancelled the order!

just a note of warning. long delays may be there if you are waiting!

I am not defending them but from the 20th till today it's only 2 working days. Maybe you ordered them a little late since you wanted to have them by 25?

I will probably order them too this week but I will not be fitting them until temperature falls low enough.

they say 3-4 working days, I didnt ask them just to cancel because of the service day, I said to them to cancel if they couldn't get them within the delivery times stated on the website, if there was going to be a delay.... I could have handled a week, but wont be waiting until december .... there must be delays getting the tyres.... I was worried after others had posted on big delays, so I queried it... they didn't say it will just be a few more days, they cancelled.

I ordered my nexens on the 22nd and they've just been shipped. According to the shipment tracking they're coming from Germany and are currently in the Netherlands.

Maybe send them another message saying you didn't want to cancel? Hopefully they'll re-instate your order. The nexens have gone up a few quid :\

I noticed they had gone up... I think they are going up in price all over! I have just got some nangkang winters ordered from the local skoda garage, expensive (£115 each!) but good reviews here... http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Nankang/SV1-Winter-Plus.htm

at least I know they are going on the car on friday, and I have an account, so can pay over the winter months for them too :)

After trying several local tyre places and a couple not so local, not to mention two Skoda dealers in a 50 mile radius, I've been told that winter tyres in 205/40/17 are like hens teeth, with most people saying they must be out there but none they know of! ATS can get Pirelli's but not a confirmed delivery date as they don't know when they will be getting them in and that's it! Only other suggestion I've had is smaller wheels and tyres, there must be some out there, surely....looks like I'm joining the queue on mytyres! lol

All being well, I'm getting a full set of new Skoda steels, Nankang Snow SV-2 tyres 195 55 15s from mytyres and fitted privately for £370 all in. Me and arny wangled some discount on the wheels for a mini-group-buy and a friend of a friend has a mobile tyre fitting van

Cheaper than tyres for the standard monte alloys which will stay tucked away for winter. No-brainer for me really? Why spend all the time (and money) hunting down odd size tyres when there's a cheaper, better option available? Sure, the steels are a bit fugly, but the car is already impossible to keep clean for more than an hour due to the toss weather! So it's not gonna look properly pretty for a while now
