Question regarding buying winter tyres

Featured Replies

Hey guys. I have a 2010 Skoda Fabia Sport 1.2 HTP. The current summer tyres are: 205/45/R16/83W. I've been trying to get some winter tyres, but no one stocks them in this size.

So I've been trying for a steelies + tyres combo on mytyres, but I am stumped as to which set to buy. Could you give me some advice on this and whether it will fit on to my current wheel fittings or will I need to change them too?

Much appreciated.

Hi,

the official winter size for the Fabia II has recently been standardised at 185/55 R15 on a 6Jx15 ET43 rim (to allow chains to be fitted if required). However we went with the 195/55 R15 85H as this matches the spare and is effectively the same diameter as the 205/45 R16. Not sure on your budget but something like this should be what your looking for;

So I just had some 195/55/16/87H Nankang SV2s fitted today. Cost me £386 (inc. fitting), works out at £96.50 per corner.

Have I been ripped off? :wonder:

I live in the middle of nowhere, so the local dealers was my only choice.

On the plus side, I didn't get charged extra on my insurance premium

Seems about right, bit expensive for a budget tyre but a funny size, are you sure that is the right size for a Fabia?

hmm looks more like an Octavia / Yeti size than a Fabia.

That is quite a difference - 5%, the recommendation is to stay within 2.5%, what does it say on your fuel flap sticker, is 195/55/16 a recommended Skoda size?

If not then you may have issues should you need to make an insurance claim for using a non recommended tyre size.

Yep, wrong size and expensive.

The 1.2HTP can have 165/70x14's, check your fuel filler cap. These are also approved on the Fabia for snow chains.

We have four Bridgestone Blizzak's on steel wheels, supplied by mytyres for £320 although they have gone up a bit.

Cheers

My dealer didn't say anything about this... I just said that my summer tyres were 205/45, and he suggested that I should get these nankangs fitted. Should I go complain?

Personally, yes I would. You will be the one with an insurance nightmare not the dealer. The general rule of thumb is buyer beware but I mean a Skoda dealer ought to know what kit is approved for a Skoda really.

What size tyres did you have before and on what rims? Have you had the tyres fitted to the same rims?

I meant "dealer" as in tyre dealer and not the car dealer (skoda). Sorry for any confusion. Would I still have a chance if I complained? Or should I bite the bullet if I do end up in a ditch and pay for it myself?

I had 205/45 on 16s. I now have 195/55 on 16s as well. The rims haven't changed, just the tyres.

Totally wrong then i am afraid. Don't know what they were thinking putting them on, go straight back and demand they be swapped for correct ones.

Will do that when they're open. They're closed on weekends. :/

Let us know how you get on.

Will do. By the way, is it illegal fitting tyres not to the manufacturer's specifications?

not strictly illegal i don't think (Police could pull you up for something like unroadworthiness if they were being pedantic i suppose) but your insurance company would void your policy if they knew.

That does make a difference, I assume they told you what size they were fitting before they fitted them, you accepted that size so not sure you have a leg to stand on really as they are not unsuitable for the car - just not the manufacturers recommended size.

Most tyre dealers will try to sell you what they have in stock rather than to turn the custom away!

So true, money is money after all. As long as the car is fine and the winter tyres work, then I won't worry about it.

I don't think the police would deliberately check your tyres for the hell of it. I had a word with my insurance company - LV said they don't care what tyres I put on, nor do I need to tell them. The guy didn't say anything about tyres out with the manufacturer's specifications however. I'm not sure whether I should tell them or not as they may charge a fortune on my premium. I think I'll just drive safer this winter.

Your speedo will be out and the insurance company wouldn't pay out in the event of an accident. I wouldn't run incorrect size tyres on my car and nor should anyone else.

This is my post re tyre sizes for all Fabias

Thanks for the help man. Will try and get them changed tomorrow. Will they have the right to refuse or charge me extra?

Went to the local fitters today that done my tyres. They said that my tyres were an "oversize conversion" so the insurance would be fine. It is an undersize conversion where I may have trouble with the insurance. Apparently, they also said the speedo would only be "1mph or so" out, whereas you guys have been saying at least 3mph at higher speeds. Ultimately, they won't change my tyres.

What are the dangers of driving around with bigger tyres? I've had no problems with grip or anything, although there is a lot more feedback through the steering wheel and the speedo problem I can acclimatize to.

P.S: These tyres killed a rabbit last night. :/
