The car thats surprised me the most...

Featured Replies

Hi Guys I recently purchased an almost new Polo GTI 1.4TSI its white with some nice bit of kit like parking sensor's and touch screen DAB radio, cruise etc, done over 1000miles in it last week visiting Cornwall and the car was.... flawless

When I bought the car I didn't expect it to wow me as much as it did, I bought it for more of a practical purpose with my head rather than my heart as it wasn't modified and had a decent amount of space inside and was nice and new so hopefully would be reliable.

My background is mainly dubs (S3's, Cupra R's included) with a 911 thrown in so had my fair share of 200+bhp cars and I am surprised that the Polo is probably the best and one of the quickest. All I've done to it is remap so probably around 210ish bhp and it really is a rocket ship thanks to the 7 speed DSG box and the supercharger keeps the boost going from tick over with the turbo taking over at 3.5k to the redline and I certainly think it punch's well above it weight. Its quiet, comfortable and very well built and with the XDS diff handles well too.

What has impressed me most is the economy, I put £130 of V Power in and got just over 1000miles on that which is almost as good as any diesel, plus £110 a year to tax isn't to shabby.

So for the overall package its surpised the hell out of me and I don't think within a budget I would want another car in the near future as it does everything really well.

I did have a brand new Fabia VRS on order but it was just taking far to long so I found a lovely Polo Gti for sale, I love the Fabia just as much as the Polo and I know it woul've surpised me just as much as the Polo

Don't think it is if you read the bottom line

Looks pretty chunky! Enjoy your new Polo :)

it really does look like a mini Golf GTI,

Not wanting to be nasty but the word that springs to mind when reading this is 'TRAITOR'

i always found the Polo GTI i hard car to justify over the Fabia vRS unless you're a vain or snobby person.

I thought the waiting times for a Polo GTi would be the same as the vRS anyway? did you get a pre reg one?!

wrong forum, but nice car

Not really. People here are very interested to see comparison's between the Polo GTI and the vRS.

Plus I don't blame Stu for going for the Polo GTI as wait times are a joke. If you can get one for the right price, then go for it. Only thing that stopped me from getting it over the vRS tbh.

Who's your remap with Stu and has it used much oil?

Sonner I bought a nearly new Polo Gti with 5k miles on it, the price was pretty much the same as a brand new VRS I had on order, I ordered my Fabia in April and was promised the middle of September, I just couldn't wait that long, I completely agree with you on the snobby front though but it did make sense to get a nearly new Polo as I would never pay 20k for it brand new.

I had a Revo remap and had no problems so far, yes it does use oil but I would say around 1 litre per 1000 miles so far so within VW tolerances, but whats strange is as I was very gentle on the throttle during my 1000 mile drive I've hardly used any oil? So have to put it down to performance driving uses oil, plus if you give it the beans it does puff a bit of black smoke out, but none of this worries me as I was getting a steady 53MPG and it is a seriously quick car when you want it to be, not really the signs of a faulty engine.... hopefully!

Your parking is PISH!!!(or was it ur missus who parked ON a roundabout);)

Best looking Fabia here...

...I'll get my coat

Your joking right. Yes the Fabia and the Polo are nearly identical underneath, but LOOK at the Polo, it looks AWESOME..I know which I would have IF i could afford it!!

Sorry Stu i didn't mean to make my first post sound that agressive. Sytle wise i think we can all admit the Polo has the Fabia by the soft squidgy bits, and if you got a 5k Polo for Fabia vRS money then why not, you will probably see better residuals too.

I'm just very Anti VW/AUDI and more Pro Skoda/Seat as i see them as the more honest brands within the VAG group.

Though it's probably just the W**kers that drive the Audi/VW company cars that i dislike.

 Its ok mate no offence taken

I agree Audi/VW road warrior drivers get right on my nerves and I certainly am not one of them! I am totally Pro Skoda too and the VRS is remarkable value, VW have priced the Polo way to high in my opinion but I was very happy to see this one for a decent price at a local VW dealership, its a Dec 2010 model and was 20k when brand new, 6 months later I picked it up for 4k less! Enough too turn anyone's stomach on that kind of depreciation!

Nice looking car :)

(psst! I'd have one over the vRS, but not if I was paying/buying new!)

Thank god they don't look the same!!! One reason I chose the vRS is that it would look different. The vRS actually has far nicer lines for my taste... And one thing which you don't notice from distant photos is that very sexy "puff" on the front bonnet which points out its sport character. Whereas the polo is as boring as the weaker models. Maybe it's because there are so many VW out there, and they all share more or less the same front look, that I think I've been seeing this car around for the last 20 years.... You wouldn't notice a white polo even in the middle of 100 black cars, and that's because VW has been ridiculously re-using the same design on all its models, I still can't tell with first look, a Polo from a Golf...

Other than that, I think the impressions would be very similar from both cars, so nothing surprising in the description... Without reading the title it could actually belong to a vRS or even Cupra (although stiffer than the other two).

To sum up, I was also between the vRS and the GTI, the price difference was negligible but apart from liking the vRS lines a lot more, I neither liked the idea of having "just another Golf, oh wait, that's a Polo", +I would really have a hard time finding my own car when I would be parked outside big malls...

as a long time waiter i can remember you mate, i stuck it out but its only coz im tight

the polo is nicer to look at from the outside but my god them seats are ugly, who designed them a mad jock/krout halfbreed??

got to say if it was 5 doors and the same price id have a polo but for value and 5 doors theres only 1 choice for me

you got the best colour though ;)

Hmm I'd counter that with it's incredibly tall stance which doesn't point to a sporty character..

I come from a ph1 Clio172, which felt like a roller skate around the twisty bits, unlike my vRS which I have to admit feels like a London Routemaster (google that!!) I'd love a direct comparison drive between the Polo and Fabia...it wouldn't surprise me if it was worlds apart.

"just another Golf, oh wait, that's a Polo",

Called branding...and it seems to work VERY well for VW, why change it. There is nothing wrong with buying a car that is popular...

Don't get me wrong here, I like my vRS. The gearbox is brilliant for trundling around town, it goes like stink from a standing start, er and the seats are comfy! I don't buy into branding myself, but dont have a problem buying something that a few million people have bought too..

PS the Polo rear light cluster is SHOCKING, such a shame...

Some good feedback for and against, I agree in some cases some bits are nicer of the Fabia than the Polo and vice versa but I do prefer the overall look of the Polo. I'd happily do a like for like comparison with a VRS if anyone's in the north west area

define north west, its a big area to cover :giggle:

Maybe so, but it's been made to death... Really, I've seen so many of them by now that I think my eyes subconsciously skip all Polos and Golfs after such an over-exposure to them! And surely, the Golf is the most successfull child of VW and maybe one of the most successful ones in the automotive history. It's just feels wrong to my eyes for VW to try and persuade everybody that they bought something "almost like" a Golf whatever they have chosen, a Polo, a Jetta, a Passat, a Touran etc. Even the Touareg (2011) shares the same grill! It's a joke really.

If all manufactures followed VW's approach, all in all there would be like 10 different cars out there.

Of course all this has to do only with the appearance, the car inside is great for me. In fact I was considering it even before the vRS came out but was hesitating due to the boring look.

And one last point about the vRS's height. It is actually a bit taller than you would expect but that's also a point of difference, and while compared to a 3door polo Gti it might look number to some due to more doors, it's far more interesting than the equivalent 5d version of the Polo Gti which actually needs the Polo badge on the back, to make sure it's not a Golf.

I'm based in Warrington also if you see me about my plate is PO10 WOW (couldn't resist when I saw it)

There seems to be some very aggressive posting in this thread. Just to counter/answer a few posts without bothering to quote the OPers:

1. The tartan interior is a throwback to the original 1975 Golf GTI heritage. Not sure that heritage justifies it in 2011, mind - especially when VW don't provide an alternative.

2. There is a 5 door variant.

3. All marques have a 'family' look which carries across the current range. It's difficult to criticise the similarities of VW models without thinking of the Fabia/Roomster/Yeti/Octavia similarities.

4. It's difficult to bring badge snobbery into this when the models differ in looks so much and as such are aimed at different tastes (see below), but I find it hard to defend when you look at differences such as the RNS310 satnav being £300 more in the Polo for EXACTLY THE SAME THING!

The estate variant of the vRS was the trump card that Skoda carried in my eyes, but if I was pitting hatch vs hatch, GTI vs vRS then I'd still plump for the vRS with dark chrome alloys in rallye green. Hot hatches should be loud and proud. I think the Polo GTI is a lovely looking car, but it doesn't shout about it. For me, that's the selling difference.

As for my thoughts on you and your car Stu, I think you're very lucky to get such a cracking deal and I'm glad that you're clearly very happy with your choice.

Am I having Deja Vu?

Because I'm sure I've seen the same posted a little while back.

It even had the same pictures including the lady sitting on the rounbabout waiting for the driver to hurry up. :wonder:

We're always going to dig at people for buying the 'other car' - ie Seat Ibiza Bocanegra, Polo GTI and the Audi A1. Personally I can't really compare mine to them as its an Estate vRS so is 100% better than the above mentioned

They all go as fast, handle the same and use as much fuel etc etc

However, looks wise we'll always disagree! The Fabia is too tall, estate gets away with it a bit by being longer.

I rate them as follows mainly because I own the Fabia vRS but also because the others are either over-priced and ugly:

Fabia (Biased as I own one)

Polo (Expensive but alas 2nd choice)

Audi (Expensive and ugly)

Seat (Cheap interior and ugly, plus boy-racer following)

Give me an A1 with Xenons, leather seats, slightly better MPG/road tax and BOSE system and I'd do a swap

I don't get how the tax and mpg can be better on what is basically the same car?!

I don't get how the tax and mpg can be better on what is basically the same car?!

Audi and Volkswagen are lighter and more aerodynamic. "VAG Magic"....:S

The Polo Gti which actually needs the Polo badge on the back, to make sure it's not a Golf.

Really, the difference is night and day to me...
