Whats this? Is it Important?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Decided to give the octavia a bit of a clean today and decided to do the engine bay too.

Upon removing the top cover I discovered a "bodged" pipe covered in gaffa tape I was completely unaware of, looked to be some sort of vacuum or Crank case ventilaton pipe. Not to sure.

Below are a couple of pictures, can anyone identify it so as I can purchase a replacement.

Many Thanks

Do you know what it is or rather does also?

I have a feeling that the local stealer will probably try and sting me for diagnostics if I ask them to just identify it.

A part number would be great if possible.

It's the oil breather y pipe, which is prone to splitting. Any VAG main dealer parts dep will know what it is.

might as well replace all the breathers with silicone ones though - if that ones has perished the others will be on the way out too

Thanks very much for that, I suspected it was to do with crankcase ventilation but couldnt confirm.

Not a bad price for a silicone replacement either.

very common issue - if you can get the search to work there is loads of info on this in the forum

Managed to find some good information now thanks. Problem previously was I wasnt sure what I was searching for!

Seems a viable option is using a t-piece and some 3 or 5 ply silicone hose too.

The one above works well. Give the rocker a hose down with some degreaser too :p

I like the way they tried to fix it lol. Whilst your at it get the lower breather pipe. They tend to go together. Or get an oil catch can.

Get the silicone replacements off ebay from creation motorsport and replace the 90 degree bend that goes into the engine as mine broken when i changed pipes as it had gone that brittle due to age

I know! I was completely oblivious to the fact it had been "repaired" if you can call it that.

Am I right in thinking the lower pipe is the one with two 90 degree joins?

I have seen the pair from Awesome Gti for £70 although the ebay company appears cheaper.

How would I go about fitting a catch tank? Is it straight forward?

Theres a thread of mine here somewhere with the part numbers.

As DBP say may as well get lower one because that won't be far behind either

**** easy todo TBH!

don't get them from awesome - you can get all the pipes from creation for much less

I got my Y-hose from Viper.

£29 and available in black also (what I wanted).

Also, for the love of god man, get that engine cleaned! A small stiff brush and some water soluble degreaser works wonders.
