DPF

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Rather ironically, having watched Watchdog the other night all about DPF issues on various makes of car, might DPF light came on on the way home last night.

I was on a transpennine route so dropped into 4th gear and settled down to between 50 and 60mph at just over 2500rpm to help with regen.

Question is the light went off again in around 1minute, maybe less, is this to be expected?

I was expecting to spend more like 10 minutes of driving over 2500 rpm to get it regened. Is it possible for a regen to complete in a minute or so?

I may just be worrying about nothing here but as this is only the second time I have seen the DPF light in 30000 miles and 20 months it does make me wonder.

Nice to see other manufacturers suffer from similar problems although I have to say I don't understand these people who do 8000 miles a year but go out and buy a diesel.

You will not have a regen in one minte, you are going to find you have a possible sensor problem. coming..

All diesel vehicles of euV specification have to have DPF units fitted to meet the eu regs and comply with the certificate for use in UK.

Very few vehicles actually have a DPF fail, these are ones that are used ignoring manufacturers instructions. Most DPF faults are due to sensor problem, this is a known fault and upgraded ones are now being fitted.

I am on my second Superb Elegance 2.0 170 with DPF, most of my driving is rural Cornwall, some dual carriageway and a few motorway trips, I have never had the warning light come on on the road, never had fast tickover and hot smell, another proof of regen, the only time I ever see the warning lights is when turning on the ignition.

I only use BP or Shell fuel, do not drive for economy or maximum performance but the fastest safe time to get from A to B, which in Cornwall in the summer is very slow so how I do not get the so called DPF failures and regens is a mystery.

I too watched the show :( I knew of the issues already my new 170CR has already once when I turned it off had fans still going max power and that was a couple of days after a 860 mile straight drive on 90% motorways! I wish I had the choice to not have one at all work cars all had DPF problems too if they dont do long runs nightmare!

I had a bypass pipe fitted and DPF Delete map added to the car, what a beautiful car to run now! No loss of power when it does a pre-regen before the light comes on like I used to.

No worries, no hassles.

I recommend anyone to do it :)

Watch out for your 2012> MOT test.

rotodiesel.

Another problem with your dpf can be Oil Dilution, where the extra fuel used in the regeneration ,some goes down into engine and can build up in sump. This has happened to me when dipping oil, the levels were well above the max mark, still under warranty so garage changed the oil and oil filter, but I think they are rising again. There have been serious things happening because of this, such as engine running away without foot on accelerator, see Oil Dilution in Roomster section. :S

It should be ok, I know some MOT mechs ;)

that's normal. Just the car doing its normal thing to keep dpf ok without forcing you to drive at high revs when light comes on. If you turn engine off it will just carry on next time.

Best advice I can say is to use decent fuel like shell which has cleaners and soot reducers in it. Done 21k in mine with no issues.

Totaly agree with decent fuel. Done 6K in mine now and never seen/felt a regen. Permanent V-Power diet.

Never had a DPF problem with my 2010 elegance estate 2.0 lt 140hp as thankfully it has not got one of the damm things fitted.

Our VRS was ticking over fast last night when I parked up so I believe it was trying to regen. When I turned it off the fans started going full blast. Not to worried as next time I take it out it has a 200 mile motorway run which should clear it out.

I always fill up at the cheapest stations as I have no money to give away. Result is 60000 mls with no DPF issues at all....it is all a case of treating the car right and having a suitable track-profile....no excessive short tips and stuff like that. Taking it out is no solution and a criminal offence.

A criminal offence? So you could end up with a criminal record for taking off your DPF?!

Do you have a Link/Evidence to back that up.......?

Just had the Shark Performance DPF delete work done on 2008 Skoda Octavia 170CR ....wow, its so smoooth and punchier and higher MPG!....Ben is a straight shooter and you want that when you are having "elective" work done on your car. Hats off to shark. Shark keeps all the mechanicals in place except for the internal filter, so there would need to be a stringent test to trigger MoT alarms. if there is more soot, i couldn't see it from the exhaust. my other readings suggest that most most diesels pass MOT testing with or without DPF.

this is a typically EU overshoot...go to shark, you will be happy

Rubbish. Not an offence. Also shell is the cheapest in my area anyway.

What was the cost out of interest. No need for exact figures, just curious roughly how many hundreds?

I think "criminal offence", means that unless you tell the DVLA you could get a fine, or maybe liable for extra road tax since you are no longer a 'cleaner diesel'. Bit like removing your CAT on a petrol.

So not really criminal, but violating road traffic law.

Of course if you re-tune it so it burns cleaner, it may not need one, but you would still need this to be type-approved.

I don't do many miles in my PD TDi Vrs (octavia MkII) and the car was doing quite a lot of regens so I bought some JLM DPF cleaner and stuck it in the tank with a tank full of BP,s finest Diesel.

One shot (Can full ) at every service. I've noticed that the car doesn't regen as much, I think it may be working , £24:99 once a year can't be bad

My mate is having terrible problems with this in his Mazda 6. Quite a common problem.
