Am I missing something?

Featured Replies

I am still trying to persuade my mrs to let me buy a Fabia vrs, and I am in the proud posession of Autocar's long term test, which I am sure most of you have read.

They quote 30-70 times of 7.6 seconds, which I thought OK, fair enough, not as fast as the sub-six second times of a CTR or a WRX or a Clio 172/182, but not bad.

Sat there staring at it yesterday as the sad muppet I am, and looked at the figures. 0-30 in 3.2s. 0-60 in 7.2s. 0-70 in 9.0 s. Hmmmmmm. After a lot of mathematical concentration, 30-70.....9.0-3.2=5.8s.

Now 5.8 seconds isn't in the quick diesel hatch category, it is in the Clio Cup and Impreza Turbo category.

I recorded several 5.7 second runs in My Cup( before I totalled it ), and that was a fearsome hatchback.

So, someone has made a cockup of something( it's usually me ), could someone as sad as me shed some light on this discrepancy?

I know, I should probably get out more. :o

A standard furby won't do 0-60 in 7.2s , so thats off for a start

Hi there, my girlfrined has a clio 182, the one witht he fancy pipes on the back(where else). I have a Black magic vRS, not run in it as such but i have been up against a red Furby vRS in milton keynes whilst driving her's, and from roundabout to roundabout, i could not get up to the vRS. However in the long runs she would go past me in the clio, but the wee Furby vRS is a surprising car, the build quality is better, and i my mind the seats are better too, also consider the space in the back, rear doors, and boot area, also insurance its cheaper!!!!!!!!!!!! so go on do it :) also before i forget the fuel economy is far better :)

I glanced at Autoexpress the other day, and they gave IIRC 0-60 in 8.5, 30-70 in 8.1, 50-70 in 6.4 in 5th and 8.7 in 6th.

Probably about right, and I'm sure its the first roadtest figures I've seen for the later cars with the shorter gearing.

0-62mph (100kmph) with a fabia vrs should be about 8.5(sometimes even less) seconds stock. Specs say 9.6secs, but they always up them.

Just dug out October's Autocar where they did a long term test with the Fabia vrs. From their article - "... we managed consistent times of 8.2sec and one incredible but genuine non-wind assisted run of 7.2 sec"

Also, their 30-70 was 7.6sec.The car had covered 15508 miles.

It

The throttle response of the Fabia is not its strong point IMO.

In My Opinion

I think where the Furby wins is sheer low down Torque. The reason it loses time is due to gear changes (Lower revving than a petrol car therefore 1 more gearchange before you hit 60).

I've been trying different styles of driving with SWMBO's car, To get the most out of my Scooby I have to ring it's neck and keep the revs up, I think the secret with the Furby is to change early and use all that torque you have on tap to pull ahead. The Furby will pull very strongly from 1800 to 2000 revs but it starts to wimp out at the top end.

I find the best tactic is to simply be above 2000 rpm, not below, if you want to drive fast. 2,500 rpm and above seems to be its sweet spot in mine. Mine seems to pull pretty well until about 4,300 rpm. Thats standard... it might do better once I've got the tuning box on it.

Just like I had said...8.5 seconds or even less...

The Fabia 2.0 is the same. Maximum torque kicks in at low rpm, i.e., 170Nm@2,400rpm, and max rpm is 6,200. (not bad at all for a petrol, the Mini Cooper has Max.torque at 150Nm somewhere mid-range and above in its rpm band).

I've uploaded the review HERE (PDF format, 2.5mb)

Steve

File seems to have some issues upon opening - "drawing error"

Will try later on another machine - looks like a good read though

I get "the file is damaged and could not be repaired".

Oh dear, I've had it up there for a while, since it was discussed last time in fact. I'll take a look when I get home and upload again if necessary. Failing that, I'll email it direct to anyone

And when you've looked at the actual figures, you'll see: 30-70 in 5.8.....lol!

I don't know about road. I had my Fabia on the track at the weekend and it performed well against all but a 550hp RS4, Golf's and Seats mainly. The torque made all the difference against the 225hp Seats.

That PDF should now be working, let me know...

Steve

got it, cheers mate!

Daz

No probs, I've got the 'Diesel Car' review as well, if you want it.
