Bring on Winter - my new 17" winter tyres

Featured Replies

As it's been less than 7'C for a few early mornings I got my 17" Wintrac Extreme Vredsteins fitted today. You can say all you like about narrower tyres, steel wheels etc - but I like my 17" alloys!

After all this expense - it better be a bl00dy cold winter!

same as mine albeit in a bigger size. I like my alloys but I also like the £££ saved by buying 16 inch tyres :giggle:

had mY vREDS on since last year! North Scotland climate hasn't managed to wear them down to the point where they are good for another winter yet!

17" Wintrac Extremes here too - going on early next week - this mild weather can't last much longer - can it?

it's not very mild here, around 11 degrees. Still warmer than I'd have thought but not noticeably so.

225/50 x 17 Goodyear Vector All Seasons for me; had them on for about 10 days and keep looking at the sky for signs of snow :p

The snow chains and snow shovel are already in the boot. emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

I also carry avalanche transceivers.

I've popped a pair of gloves in the door pocket and may consider a light scarf

Happy days JCP. I used to live in Kenya where winter meant less ice in the G&T ! Now I'm in Yorkshire living above 1,200 feet I get ice for the G&T from inside the car!

4x 7Jx16" steelies and Caddy caps here. And Conti TS830s on their way. So bring the winter on B)

(but boy, the tyres got expensive this year ...)

Bought mine in August. The prices were OK back then.

Same wheels and caps here and a neighbour commented this morning that they look "quite purposeful " compared with his ebay alloys :-)

Skoda dealers now have a special offer on winter tyres....

2 Questions....

Where did you get the Caddy caps from, I've still not seen any at sensible prices on fleabay?**

EZ_lo presumably won't know yet, but do the Caddy caps stay on by themselves, or do you have to resort to a spot of silicone sealer on the bolts to hold 'em in place?

** Being a stingy git, I don't want to pay more than £15 - £20 for a set (which is what I paid for the set of T5 caps that I bought last year on recommendation from several people on here - only to find that they don't stay on). It's a shame that 'VW' is so prominent on the Caddy caps. I guess the alternative is to buy a set of aftermarket 16" full trims from Wilkinsons (£16.99)- some look a bit tacky, but if you're lucky, sometimes they stock sets that don't look too bad!

I have them on and they stay on by themselves, £30 from a Skoda dealer - maybe too rich for a stingy git?

Followed a gritter home tonight, getting chilly out there , +1 c

I bought VW caps of the sort pictured and recommended by Johann here. Haven't tried them on so far - hope to do so at the end of the week (when my tyres come and get installed on SM). And I bought them second hand at Polish fleebay "relative". I am still hoping that noone is missing them on his/her steelies :giggle: The price tag was ~£15 with P&P.

Regarding the Skoda special offer - prices were too high and not too many tyre choices here

Here is my winter solution for my Scout - Yeti Spitzberg 17" alloys (secondhand) with Dunlop WinterSport 4D in 225/50R17 - fitted by Allams of Epsom. Didn't get time to clean the car...

I think they look the part. The Spitzberg are offset ET45 rather than 50 for the standard Proteus wheels, but otherwise an identical fitting.

Think those Spitzbergs look better on your Scout than the Yeti :)

+ 1 They look spot on!

Got my Yokohama W.drive 225/50 17s fitted 10 days ago and the temperature has not been below 10degC since; argh! :'( Having to drive around on 'tippy toes' to avoid overcooking the tread.

I've had mine on for weeks.

I don't think you will cook the tread, as continental suggested to me you could use winters all year round if you couldn't afford both summers and winters.

Maybe I've been watching too much F1? :giggle:

I'm thinking that driving on winter tyres in 10degC+ is akin to running on wets on a dry track.

Anyhow I suppose it won't hurt to drive a touch sedately for once. ;)

Those Spitzberg wheels look great on the Scout! Good choice of Winter tyre, they seem to be the best at the moment.

Cheers James - skillfully fitted by your guys I would add!

I've been impressed with the WinterSport 4Ds - amazingly given the chunky tread they seem quieter than the Dunlop SP01s that were supplied on the Scout. The handling does feel a bit vague, but I don't expect to be clipping the apex flat out in November anyway!

Obviously, I've not had chance to try them in snow, but they seem good on wet grass and mud. I've also been on the M25 for an hour at 17 degrees with no ill effects obvious despite the soft compound.

Les.

....... - this mild weather can't last much longer - can it?

Speaking to someone in the farming world recently, he's convinced that they'll not be another cold winter this year.

I tried to get him to say why he thought that but he just strugged his shoulders in the manner of someone who "just knows"!
