Summer tyre Storage?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I currently have 3 winter wheels and tyres, waiting for the 4th as it seems to have been seperated in the post.

Just wondering what is the best way to keep the "Summer" tyres/wheels while not in use, I was planning to put them in the loft stacked on top of each other.

Is it pest to remove most of the Air or just leave them at full pressure?

Cheers

Over inflate, if anything. Stack them with some carpet title between them. Or get a wheel tree :)

Keeping out the sun is the most important thing. Leaving outside will do them no good. Definitely in a shed, or a loft as above. Do not deflate to keep the tyre shape.

PS: Not going to move it myself (yet ;)) but this IS a tyre thread and not specific to fabia mk2 ;) Lots of other model owners might want to know as well.

I'll look after them for you B)

Keep them in the dark out of sunlight, also ideally in the cool (not a problem with the summer tyres during the winter, but not ideal to store winter tyres in a hot loft during the summer  )

If you have room then do not stack them either.

PS: Not going to move it myself (yet ;))

Part time mod then? :dull:

Well as "someone" reported it to the mod team, suppose I should move it now. :p

Sometimes I just like to see how things play out, thats all. :D

:blush::angel:

TBH the OP had a genuine question that many people would not know the answer to, now many more people can now benefit from the info

Tyre manufacturers like Michelin offer advice on such things on their web site;

I have 12 wheels and tyres to store. :)

Split them between my Shed and Garage, both are alarmed, covered by cctv and heated to 5 degrees when the outside temp is lower.

I keep them inflated and verticle but can't say I go round them checking pressure every week and rotating them.

Also I clean the alloys and apply a protector before I put them away.

Cheers

Why not stack winter tyres ?

Stack them, its fine. Do it we both sets of wheels. Just clean and wax them and separate each wheel with a sheet of packing foam and they are wrapped in 2 fabric bags that my mates sofa came in!

Why not stack winter tyres ?

If they are just tyres then it will be fine, but wheels and tyres stacked for 5 months or so cannot be good for the bottom wheel as it's taking the weight of the other 3, which is where the wheel stands comes in, but they are generally only spaced at 225mm, so will be pointless on a 225 tyre because of the extra width of the sidewall.

If you do stack them then most tyre manufacturers recommended that you rotate them every month ..... not sure how many people would though.

3wheels is slightly less weight than a car and the tyre is more than capable. As I have said, this is what I do and plenty of others with no ill effects. Just make sure they are fully or over inflated and they'll be fine.

So do I, but this is simply because i do not have room not to 8 wheels and tyres takes up a lot of room, but who are we to say what the tyre manufacturers recommend is wrong?

If you want to be confused by how to store tyres or tyres on wheels, maybe look at the Michelin site - or maybe its only me that came away confused, bottom line is, I reckon that laying them down flat - maybe on something like fibre board to keep them off the garage floor - and stacking 5 high, can't be that bad for them - I mean, who has space to do anything else normally. Anyway, does anyone know how "tyre hotels" store winter and summer wheels?

The level of light getting into my garage depends on how often my wife attacks the spiders webs - so that is usually not an issue.

Most tyre suppliers will have new tyres on a rack (same position they would be fitted on a car) this I assume is mainly so it makes selecting the tyres you require and stock rotation MUCH easier.

They would also be more stable this way.

At my brother-in-law's appartment block in Switzerland they have a whole bay with a set of horizontal racks, just like you find at a tyre dealers, where they store their off-vehicle tyres and wheels. It is underground and temperature controlled, so perfect conditions. The blokes even have a party down there on the weekend they have to change to winter tyres!

Mine sit stacked in the cellar, as it's the only choice. They seem fine.

I have space in the loft for two stacks, and the loft has a heater bulb which goes on when if it getts really cold like last year.

Thanks All.

Any suggestions on how to store them outside if you don't have enough inside space?

Same cleaning/inflate/store in shade as above...just get a good waterproof taup over them....or if you have room get a cheapish plastic or wooden 1/2 height shed (lockable) out of Argos or B&Q???? B)
