Help - what wheels will fit my vRS?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've been looking in the Octavia II sub forum and they seem to be able to get 4 steel wheels and winter tyres from about £110 each, but the Mk1 wheels are mostly £170+

Are these sizes correct...

Mk1 = 6½ x 16 5 x 100.00 x 57.00 ET: 42.00 5-hole steel wheel

Mk2 = 6 x 16 5 x 112.00 x 57.00 ET: 50.00 5-hole steel wheel

Generally the same brand of tyre seems to be £20-£30 more just because of the different PCD and width.

Is there any technical reason why I couldn't fit 6x16 to mine?

Does anyone know of any good deals on wheels and tyres that'll fit a Mk1 RS? In the meantime I'm off to try and find some used wheels on ebay...

Thanks!

EDIT: I've just looked again and the tyre sizes are the same for both models so it looks like I'd be paying maybe £100 more just for a different wheel fitment!

The following will fit:

MK4 Golf

MKI A3

Fabia (MKI & MKII)

these are the most common wheels you will find

Mk1 = 6½ x 16 5 x 100.00 x 57.00 ET: 42.00 5-hole steel wheel

This the correct size

Thanks Gizmo / Chris. Stupid question probably but assuming I get new wheels specifically for winter tyres are 16" the best to go for (or what about 15s ?) If I go for 16s do I want 205/55 or 205/50 tyres? Thanks for your help.

205/55/16 is the correct size to go for, not sure if a 15" wheel would clear the vRS front brakes? I would of thought not.... pity because 15" steel wheels are 10 a penny!

Good point, I read earlier that you need 16" or above for the vRS but in all my internet searching I forgot! I have just found that camskill seem to have stock of Avon, Pirelli Goodyear and Dunlop, and they beat mytyres by a considerable amount including delivery. Just need some wheels to put them on now!

Yes 16's needed for the VRSemoticon-0148-yes.gif

PM Bodge, he was selling some 16" steelies

Camskill do some great deals. I just bought some Falkens from them & not only were they cheaper than anyone else they arrived the next day as promised. :thumbup: :thumbup:

def need 16" to clear front calipers

Thanks guys. I'm planning on keeping the car SORN'd until December and it'll need tax and MOT then as well.

However at the rate I'm going it'll spring before I make my mind up - and find some wheels on ebay!

Bora and beetle for steel wheels too. But why not alloys? iIt would give you a much bigger range, Toledo, Leon Golf, Bora, TT, A3 Beetle,

I spent a couple for hours last night on ebay and the for sale section here looking for suitable wheels. 4 alloys seem to be around £250 for used ones although I did find some nice ones150 miles away that sold last night for £75.

However the costs of...

the tyres + delivery £310

petrol used to collect the wheels £50

fitting costs for the tyres £60

plus the fact that ideally I'd like to get the winter wheels refurbed in black or anthracite £200?

and it was getting a bit expensive! I'd actually prefer alloys to steel but don't mind either way. Really though I don't want to pay much more than £500 in total.

I think they were mine...... I've sold 3 sets in the last 3 weeks, the most I've got for a set of 5 16" is £140

If it was mine you were looking at then they're back up for sale - the buyer had a Passat with 5 x 112mm stud pattern. I'll put them in the classifieds here tomorrow.

I searched ebay for a bit then gave up and just bought new steel wheels with winter tyres from mytyres.

Other than the wheels being delivered over two days I was happy enough with the service.

£493 all in.

@ Dox, yes I think it was your wheels I was looking at on ebay. Problem is I'm still not 100% sure it's worth the cost of me fitting winter tyres especially as I also need to do tax/MOT and the 40k mile service pretty soon too. And by my reckoning it'll cost me about £60 in petrol to collect yours, or nearly as much to get a courier to deliver.

@ lordrobs - what tyres did you go for from mytyres? I checked a few days back and they had started offering Avon Ice Touring 91H in the Mk1 fitment for about £140 a wheel. However I've just had another look today and get this message...

"Unfortunately we don't have any wheels for this model at the moment."

Seems a bit strange as they were offering about 30 different tyre brand combos a few days back!

I'll be advertising some vw Houston (beetle) 16" alloys soon off of swmbo's golf, finished in a shadow chrome effect and factory fresh.
