YETI- How to run in a new engine

Featured Replies

Slightly off but many years ago in the Army drove a well loded Bedford RL (Petrol straight 6) 4 tonner up a long hill at night, lifted the engine cover (they were cab over engine models) and was most surprised to see the manifold and half the head glowing red hot!!

Helped to keep the cab warm on a cold exercise in W Germany.

Bedford RL - talk about a museum piece! :giggle:

During a recent visit to the JLR plant at Halewood I was told exactly that Graham.

Engines are picked off the line (it was once 1 in 50, but now with so few failures, it's a far lower number) and bench run them on a computerised rig that simulates all sorts of misuse, including running at near peak revs for extended periods on a dynometer to simulate a load, to the extent that on some tests, the turbo & exhaust can glow red-hot!

Agreed, as I said, but Charlieian said ALL engines are so tested (before installation the engine is bench tested at maximum revs for an extended period (sometimes 24 hrs!).

Hi

Another query please.

They recommend the first service for the Yeti at 15000 kms OR 1 year from the date of purchase, whichever comes earlier.

Is there any point in perhaps having it serviced and maybe doing an oil change at say, 7500 kms or is it a waste of time, energy and money?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

Sounds like you are on fixed servicing, so I would save your money. Modern oils are designed to be much longer lasting.

All the Skoda's sold here in India typically have their service interval recommendations set at 15000kms or 1 year from date of purchase whichever comes earlier. This is a direct recommendation by their company, Skoda India - www. skoda-auto.co.in

The dealers simply recommend exactly what the company has asked them to do.

So far so good.

Anyway there a long while to go for the 1 year and/ or 15000kms mark because my normal driving is about 1200-1300kms per month including all city errands and commuting plus my out of station driving trips. Most of the driving destinations I go to are a maximum of 400kms away from my home base, hence the driving mileage pattern as above.

Thanks a lot & Cheers.

My new (Today!!) Yeti came with a tag on the keys saying that the Diesel Particulate Filter may get clogged up with light running so you have to once in a while (if you are a short journey driver) take it out on a good run to build up the heat in the filter to clean it out otherwise the warning light will come on.

Theres a lot of chat on the Octavia forum (search for Diesel Particulate filter).

So as well as running in you should get it hot enough occasionally to burn off (clean) the DPF.

My neighbour has a Fabia which she drives like a v old lady and she had to go over 60 for 10 miles before the warning light extinguished.

Cheers

(made it to Tesco and back with no probs!! Apart from filling up at over £60. The moving headlights take a little getting used to!)

With ref to fuel efficiency in the 13 days I have owned and driven the Yeti I have just driven 380 Kilometres. I was traveling over the last couple of days so the vehicle was just parked. However, I have not filled up diesel since the first day I got it and have now reached half a tank or about 30-31 litres. This means that I appear to be getting a fuel efficiency figure of about 13 Kilometres per liter of diesel. Since this is mostly in the city with terrible start stop commuting traffic with the air-conditioning on all the time, I am thinking it is pretty good for the Yeti. I guess I will find out more about its actual fuel efficiency at the end of the month when we go out of town in it and drive along at pretty much constant speeds in higher gears for longer periods on the open motorway. I am hoping it returns at least 18kilometres or more for each liter of diesel! Let's see. Will post my findings here for information sharing purposes. Of course our driving conditions here in India are considerably different from the UK or indeed, anywhere else in the world!

Cheers!
