Oh dear, something has gone wrong!

Featured Replies

Something has gone and I don't know what!

I was at work last Wednesday and when I turned over my car it made a horrible rubbing sound, almost like a fan belt squeak. I went down the road and the faster I went it disappeared.

so I started doing tests on the car..

If I drive at speeds around bends I get no sound but when I shake the car when it is still it squeaks.

you can't hear it outside of the cabin (barely)

It sounds like it just behind the dash

if you rock the offside front wheel arch it squeaks

you can barely hear it with the bonnet open. When the car is moving

when using the cluth it makes a worse noise but when the car is stationary and I press the clutch it doesn't effect it.

The suspension doesn't feel different

The power isn't down

the fuel economy is all fine

the engine doesn't miss fire

No faults

No funny smells

Dad and me reckoned it was something had gone dry but I am worried it is something else with the noise of the clutch now being added.

any ideas?

Just a complete guess here but could it be the clutch release bearing on its way out?

We took a look at it today and we are thinking it might be the cat.

Haha, some people have too much spare time.

Whats peoples thoughts on straight through? Currently the wrong time of the year to be spending £250 on a cat or £400 odd on a full system. So thinking of a short term solution until I have recouped my Christmas/insurance losses.

Have you checked all the engine mounts are still intact?

I just went outside and jacked up the car and shook the exhaust, it squeaked.

Popped the bonnet and rocked the engine and it squeaked

rocked the wheel and it squeaked but noticed the smic wasn't attached to the bolt

took the wheel off, no squeak. Even if I rock the engine or exhaust?

I did put a bit of WD40 in the footing where the spring sits on the shock absorber.

Fixed**

It turned out to be the SMIC. As the engine turned it wobbled with the vibration, rubbing on its own bolt.

The grommet this it attached with is shot. Does anyone know the part number or know of an uprated grommet for it?

For the mean time I have reverse mounted it with the bigger flange under the metal bracket.
