Lumpy diesel when cold

Featured Replies

Hi,

Have a 2.0 PD TDI Octavia DSG (2006). Until I reach the running temperature of 90 degrees, the car can be quite lumpy when cruising (especially between 30-40mph). I get a mild stuttering which although is okish to live with, it is annoying.

I have had it plugged into the computer a couple of times by both a dealer and a local mechanic and nothing comes up. Serviced recently with fuel filter changed etc.

Could anyone offer any ideas?

Thanks

This sounds like the wonderful DPF doing a re-gen, is it always like it or just every now and then? What sort of journey do you do daily??

I've got an 08 Leon FR with the 170 PD Tdi and this did it for a while too and even now occasionally does it but not as often now the car does a good 15 mile journey incl a bit of motorway each morning....

I don't think as you say anything will come up via VAG-COM but it does get irritating.... Maybe try and do a forced re-gen of the DPF, drive at 40mph in 4th gear for around 10mins or so if possible - I know it's not easy but if you can find a reasonable length of A road late at night it's usually fine.

That works on my Leon anyway! Hope it helps

I pretty confident a 2006 PD Elegance will not have a DPF, so I'd rule that out.

More likely would be that injection timing is slightly out, although the exact in and out of that on a PD140 are something you'd need to ask about.

Can't be that on 2 counts - that car doesn't have a DPF and even if it did they don't regen when the engine is cold (that is why they don't like short journeys), the engine needs to be good and hot.

I use 4th gear at 30mph and maybe 5th at 40mph. Maybe you are trying to use too high a gear?

Yeah i saw that above, i just assumed it was the VRS with the PD 170! Never mind, must be something else - hope it's not the injectors!

Run a double dose of Millers Diesel treatment through it and see if it feels any different.

EGR would be a good starting point if you want to start inspecting parts and cleaning them up.

Injection timing can be adjusted and is also controlled by the Cam, so there are plenty of reasons it could be slightly out.

Another thing worth checking would be a temperature sensor and also the MAF.
