Motorworld ?

Featured Replies

Just rang my local Motorworld as they are my nearest pipercross filter stockists as Im looking for a panel filter.

Gave him reg number etc and said its the 1.8 turbo RS version , AUQ engine code, 180bhp etc.

He said he'll have to ring back when he's got a price......

Phone rings 10 mins later,

M'WORLD "Ive got you a panel filter, Its for the 2.0 and its 29.99."

Me " thats lovely , but Ive got a 1.8, its an 03 reg making it a mk1 Octavia"

M'WORLD " Is that no good to you then"

Me "not really"

M'WORLD " well theyre all the same filters anyway"

Me " Oh I see, Bye."

What did you honestly expect? :D

Parts places really boil my pi55 when they assume parts will be right. This is why I'll only go to the dealer for parts now. Skoda dealer prices I've found are fairly reasonable if not cheaper than some motor factors plus there's a good chance it will be right first time and not 4th time lucky wasting your time and whoever does the job.

Take a letter head in to the dealership and get it on trade ;)

The filters for the Mk1 Octavia are all the same size for the 2.0 AZJ engine, the 1.8T engines and even the 1.9TDIs. They're the same air boxes. Not sure about the 1.6 and 1.4 engines though, they might be smaller.

I gave my old OEM filter to a mate with a 2.0 Mk4 Golf when I fitted a Green filter in my VRS and it fitted in the Golf no problem.

£29.99 for a filter? why dont you just get one off ebay for buttons deliverd to your door?

Free flow air filters alow bigger particles of dust and grit into your engien and make them run leaner too.

They do sound better but thats it, there has been many studies done on this, oh! yeah and they ruin your maf sensor too as they have oil on them to help with filtering and this gets sucked onto the maf making it less able to work properly.

only filter worth bothering with is a new VAG or OEM FRAM part... (awaits those who feel they have to justify £30 "performance" filters)

i would stick with a vag filter just because of the price however my mate had a pipercross filter in his vrs and he never had a problem with oil killing the maf but there was also no real power gain, only real plus is u dont need to replace/clean it so often

As the maf doesnt show a fault until it fails you dont notice the drop off in performance as it gets worse because its gradual. If its got a film of oil on it then it just wont work as well as it should. Also if its got a film of oil on it it will pick up tiny grains of dirt that get through the free flow filter and so it goes on.

Any air filter will do tbh, so long as it's clean. I used to get coopers filters all the time but nowadays I'm finding that genuine vag ones are actually cheaper

Personally I would never fit an aftermarket sports panel or cone filter to any car that uses a maf unless you've got absolutely no choice... Like when you do an engine transplant and the space is very limited.. As stated in this in the above post the oil applied to the filter is at the actual filtering medium, not the cotton element.. The oil seeps through and ruins the maf eventually, plus there's no real gain to be had by fitting one..

If it's just noise you want then just drill a load of big holes in the base of the standard airbox, it will make it a bit more throaty.

Not exactly : \ true about all aftermarket performance filters damaging maf sensors. Induction kits require alot of oil as they are a open filter and the oil is to help catch and hold the particles originally designed by ken and norm in the desert by accident lol

A panel filter such as a pipercross which is a foam filter does not require oil and can be used safely and has a higher flow rate

We use loads of filtration systems at work so I kinda do this everyday

Ok here comes the burning, come on then give it to me lol
