Columbus Firmware Upgrade

Featured Replies

I've bought Timmyboy's old Columbus unit which is currently running a tweaked firmware to get around the Battery Drain issue on older canbus cars as a result this unit suffers from Regensberg Syndrome. Whilst this isn't the end of the world I would like to get it fixed as it bugs me.

Currently the Unit works fine but I would like to get the Climate Display & PDC to work. I've had a look around and found that I need to upgrade the PDC controller to get that working but haven't found anything definative on the Climate Display yet, Can the Columbus also display the Outside Temperature?

I also understand that DVD in motion can be setup via an updated .txt file that changes some registry settings? Can this be applied/removed easily?

Columbus versions

It is quite confusing all the different firmware upgrades and what they will and wont work on, so seeking some advice from people who have alot more knowledge than me

Many Thanks

Matthew

It is too dificult to do it, simply it is just not worth it.

Any pointers?

Easy is a bit overstatement imo.

I have had my PDC upgrated to my columbus. I think if you want to do that you need a newer CANbus.

if you already have an "old style" parking sensor then you dont need to replace the sensors only just the PDC module has to be fittet, on a sedan it is on the left side of the trunk (inside) you need to remove the carpet to get acess to it, need to install teh new PDC module do some wiring also. Depends if you have front and back sensors then you have to do a lot of wiring:)

Also the 2005 models with F+R parking sensors came only with 1 beeper that can produce 2 different sounds (for front and rear), this beeber wont work with Columbus, you need 2 spearate beepers one for front and one for rear, so need to install a new one around the pedals, cause the factory installed is right below the seat belt.

These are some pointers:)

There is no solution for AC to show up on Columbus, you would need to change the hole AC controll unit, too expensive and it is just not worth it.

Thanks for the info, I only have Rear PDC so the beeper should be fine, sounds simple enough and just what I had found previously.

Thanks for the update on the Climate Control.

All I need now is a little help in choosing my firmware level for removing Ragensberg Syndrome & possible applying DVD in motion

Matt if I can help with anything give me a shout

I have 7.2 maps, FW 2760 (but you could burn any version you wanted to) and VCDS (but limited knowledge on how to use it).

I updated my CANBUS due to battery drain issues but didnt bother with everything else as that was expensive enough :giggle:

PM me if you need to borrow anything.

Thanks, I forget which version of maps I have, I know its 7.x though. I too have VCDS and limited knowledge so always research fully before attempting anything. Canbus is done, don't think I'll bother with the A/C and it depends on costs as to upgrading the Parking Distance Controller.

At the moment, my main concern is which version on firmware is safe to upgrade my A version headunit without turning it into a brick

From hours of reading various forums I've come to the conclusion that to get around Regensburg Syndrome I need togo back to the official Skoda releases of V1xxx of which I'm not sure what features I would loose over what I have currently becomed accustomed too but would fix Regensburg Syndrome, or upgrade to 28xx but there isn't a 100% guarantee that Regensburg Syndrome will be fixed but currect functionality should be retained.

As it looks suspiciously like a Revision A, you will always be in Germany on boot up with anything other than 1xxx firmware from what I can find out. Nobody has found a woorkaround - all to do with power to the GPS receiver apparently.

Your best bet is to PM Josi - the guru on all things Columbus firmware related.

Cheers,

Thats pretty much the same conclusion I came to :( . For now I just make sure I don't turn the Maps on straight away and I then forget about turning them on so doesn't annoy me as much. I know the time will come whilst away on Holiday that I want to use it will take a while to find me and calculate the route to our destination.

Not sure I want to try and update the firmware now as I've just about finshed copying 15gb of music onto it so don't want it to re-partion the drive and loose my music

Going back to the 1xxx firmware is not straight forward either, the HDD will be wiped in the process and you will lose a lot of features including things like 7 digit postcode search, the graphical display of audio settings and a few others. There is a version of the 3xxx firmware that works fine on old A unit versions, but it will wipe your columbus hdd during the install and once installed you will need at least version 7.1 of the maps.

Thanks for that.

Reverting back to 1xxx isn't an option as I like the 7 digit post code and the extra functions that it currently offers.

It's one of those things, I'll put up with a small annoyance and gain more functionality
