KO4 and the TSI

Featured Replies

Just been reading about the APR K04 kit for the 2.0 TSI. As it seems that the TSI can produce fairly massive power why are VW still using the older cambelt engine in their factory KO4 Golfs, Cupras etc?

Probably because 265bhp is the only goal for the emission /co2 goal.

The more I look at the torque figures on a modified tsi the need for a k04 seems a bit of overkill on a fwd car?

£400 to get my shark stage 1, for 245bhp and 420Nm.

I can't see myself ever justifying the two grand (or more) for a k04 plus the diff the car would need to be able to put the power down...

Plus suspension and brake upgrades, ARB etc etc to handle the power safely

Yes agreed probably too much power, but I was interested in why the "old" engine is still in use for the highest power Golfs etc as the TSI can make 250bhp with a simple remap.

Just wonder why the Golf 35 Edition uses a K04 EA113 for example when its only 232 bhp.

On Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Volkswagen_Group_petrol_engines

It says of the EA113: "the 169 kW and higher versions have stronger pistons and gudgeon pins, new rings, reinforced connecting rods, new bearings, reinforced cylinder block at the main bearing pedestals and cap, new lightweight aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder head for high temperature resistance and strength, adjusted exhaust camshaft timing, increased cross-section high-pressure injectors, 1.2 bars (17.4 psi) (value only valid for Audi S3(8P)) boost pressure K04 turbocharger with larger turbine and compression rotor (S3, Cupra, GTI Edition 30), of which some components are NOT shared with the lower output variants"

Maybe its not worth developing the TSI along these lines for the small numbers of these made?

It does perhaps suggest that upping the power without extra mods is not a free lunch....

mainly its because the EA113 is "proven" to already be capable of running that power. The EA888 engine has not been officially developed with a bigger turbo setup as of yet, that doesnt mean it wont however, as with more stringent emissions targets etc, its likely they will further develop the engine for the newer generation golf etc.
