poor headlights

Featured Replies

Ok need some advice about improving the crap headlights in my vrs.

I am getting a bit sick of the poor headlights on the car. I have some aftermarket bulbs from ebay fitted just now they are slightly better than standard bulbs but not great. I keep reading on here about these aftermarket HID kits that they will fail an mot at the start of next year so don't want anything that will fail the mot.

Any ideas welcomed.

Cheers

get the Philips +100% and get your headlights properly aligned at a garage on the alignment machine - end of problem!

will argee with stskoda get the philips extreme vision bulbs got some in mine and the differne is noticeable without question :D !!

My dad works for vosa and after market hid will pass an mot as long as they are aligned correctly

don't fit HID for the sake of other road users - scatter is horrific and hopefully new MOT will stop the ridiculous use of these in reflector housings which is extremely dangerous

anyone who disagrees with this really needs their head looked at

I've never used them but looked into them thats why i asked my dad he had training on the new mots last month and hid will still pass an mot with the new test

Agree with above, octy's dont take well to them you just blind everybody coming other way,

Mine lasted about a week before i took them out due to been flashed all time

Thanks for the replys guys.

I wasn't to keen on the HID idea anyway after what I have read on here and the fabia 1 forum.

Ill see if I can get some of these phillips extreme bulbs ordered to replace my ebay bulbs.

Just get yourself some Phillips Blue Vision lamps.

The colour temp is 4000K, it's a white light and perfect light spread.

Had these on my 1.8T 4x4 for six years, no problems.

Ring have just launched some bulbs which are quoted as being 120% brighter than standard, so they might be worth a look too. I might try a set for the main beam on my OEM xenon set up as the MTEC ones I have now aren't that good. They are a good match for the colour of the xenons, but I think that they could be brighter.

Brightness is in the eye of the beholder or receiver. Colour tempreature is vision mate.

Not quite sure what you mean by that?

The MTEC bulbs are 4300K, same as the xenons, but do not seem to light the road up as far as I would like for a main beam bulb, so I think brighter would be better.

blue lamps waste a lot of light output by trying to have a HID look - far better to fit a lamp which produces usable, white, light

that's righ, because is just a simple painted bulb

Put a simple blob of paint on a halogen lamp, see how long it lasts when illuminated.

N% brighter is increase in lumens received on a reference rig, using a standardised "headlight" (original bulb, height, aim, reflector and lens), and photosensor at a standard position which does reflect real-World conditions.

So in other words, a 55W lamp is no brighter than any other 55W lamp.

But if the same lamp was of a different colour tempreture, the received lumens would be the same just a cleaner light?

If you can find me a normal H4 QI bulb that has a reflective range of over a mile (standard facelift Octy with clean headlights), then you may have a point.

You've completely ignored the question of how efficiently the light filament converts electricity into light.

I'm sorry but, where was that question?

Maybe that question would best be addressed to lamp manufactures.

I'm sure you'll agree that a specific colour tempreture is best suited to specific task, for me that is a white light rather than a warm white light?

On the other side of things, how easy is it to pic up xenons? And what sort of price?

Headlights are really bad on mine too.

I have just had some Phillips X-treme vision bulbs delivered so I will get them fitted soon. I think my headlights are dipped too low as well so I will probably take it to the usual place I go for MOTs and try and get them adjusted.

I have looked at this a few times and the Hid debate rages on and on and on.

All I can say is from "personal experience on the road" that whenever I get "blinded" by oncoming traffic (taking out people who forget they are on main beam) at least 95% of the time it is a Mercedes or BMW with an OEM Hid setup. I can honestly say that I have only had 1 really bad experience with what looked like an aftermarket conversion in a Saxo, but again that was not much worse than aforementions Mercs and Beemers.

Forgot to add that I have been running with 50% brighter bulbs and am interested in the new ones from Ring

I've tried brighter bulbs from halfords, they are slightly better but still not brilliant, next stop for me are a set of HIDs.

@ Wayne Kerr -

Ok, take 3 (takes 1 and 2 were eaten by Internet Exploder 8! )

Colour temperature is a totally different thing to light output. You're talking solely about light temperature. Playing with the chemistry of the filament and the envelope filler gas can change the proportions of Heat and Light produced by a given current flow through the bulb. I don't know how in detail; my materials science is about 27 years old.
